Walking around Beirut, Lebanon 2018 | Tourist sights and attractions

Description Courtecy : Graz And Beyond

As you saw in my previous video, I spent the first day of my visit to Lebanon in the seaside town of Byblos and along the Mediterranean coast. A local bus took me back to Beirut after dark and now I had another 48 hours of this weekend trip to explore the capital of Lebanon.

I started the day with a walk along the Corniche, which is popular with runners, bikers, families and fishermen.
It stretches 5 kilometers from the Beirut marina all the way to Pigeon Rocks, a monumental natural arch which is often considered THE landmark of Beirut and a must-see when in town.
This is one of the few places in town that is less hectic and loud. When you are at the outlook in front of the rocks, you can walk down to the shore and explore the area from multiple angles.

Just a few blocks east, there's Hamra, a chaotic, congested and noisy neighborhood which is not just packed with cars honking day and night, but also lots of cafés and restaurants as well as shops selling pretty much anything.
I had very tasty lunch here in one of the restaurants. Lebanese food was actually one of the reasons I came here and I was never disappointed.

After lunch, I continued east along Hamra street and eventually reached Downtown Beirut, the central district with its posh high-end designer stores, over-priced outdoor cafés and restored buildings which were originally built during the French mandate in the early 20th century. The central square of this area is called Place de l'Etoile and features a 1930s clock tower and French-style Art Deco architecture.
This area feels entirely different than Hamra: there are traffic lights and you can cross the street without running the risk being run over by a car, there are no potholes, it is very clean,
but it somehow seemed to lack authenticity.

Some of the most significant places of worship in town are located here: Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral and Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque. In between, there is a huge archeological site.

As I happened to be in town just after Christmas, I still got to see the nativity scene on Martyrs' Square and something I had never imagined seeing here: A huge Christmas tree just next to the major mosque.
Beirut is home to so many different religious denominations and this becomes obvious when the Muslim call to prayer coincides with the bells of the adjacent church.

East of the downtown district is Gemmayzeh, one of Beirut's trendiest neighborhoods. There are not just great bars and restaurants here, but also local fashion and designer stores as well as galleries. Some businesses here are so hipster that it hurts!
This neighborhood was really nice to hang out in. Definitely come here after dark, if you enjoy clubs and bars. Somehow, I realized that I don't have any good footage of the nightlife, but it is really something to experience for yourself.

Each neighborhood is unique and there is so much to see and do. Take your time and explore different parts of town, if you have the time.

As this intense weekend came to an end, I felt a bit overwhelmed by all the amazing things I've seen and done in and around Beirut. I left with an overly positive impression of a country that is often portrayed very negatively by the mainstream media. The friendly and welcoming locals certainly deserve better. This was not my last visit to Lebanon and I can't wait to come back someday.

👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:

Baalbek is one of the best places in the world to see ancient Roman temples. The area has been inhabited for thousands of years! It’s located about 2 hours east of Beirut and is a gold mine for history and archaeology lovers. Alexander the Great even passed through here!

The first site we saw was the Temple of Venus, the goddess of love and fertility. It cost 15 Lebanese pounds to enter the site. Inside, we saw a big courtyard where they would hold celebrations and perform animal sacrifices. It’s one of the biggest courtyards in the country!

There are massive stone blocks making up the sites here. Local stones were initially used, but then they started trading with other cultures for stones. The walls are so thick and massive!

Around the courtyard, I could see so many ruined buildings, temples, altars, and columns. The largest standing temple was the Temple of Bacchus, and there were only a few columns standing from the Temple of Jupiter.

The structures were massive! I loved the marble columns and the snowcapped mountains in the distance!

The Temple of Jupiter is built on a higher platform. I couldn’t get over the size of the columns. I’d never seen Roman columns this big in all of my travels, even at the Parthenon!

After leaving the Temple of Jupiter, we headed down a set of stairs to the Temple of Bacchus. The lion statues symbolize power and act as gargoyles and keep evil spirits away.

The stones are as big and heavy as the stones used to make the pyramids in Egypt! It was amazing to me that these stones were moved to this site.

I could also see sculptures symbolizing wine and the god of wine. There are sculptures of grapes and vines everywhere! There are also carvings of wheat. Baalbek was a center of agriculture!

Baalbek has to be one of my favorite Roman sites of all time! Then, we headed off to Lakkis Farm, a beautiful modern building, to get some local meat pies, known as sfeeha! They come with pomegranate molasses.

The building contains a butcher section and restaurants. There, we met Yara and watched the cooks make the dough from flour and water, fill them with lamb, and shape them into squares! They make 650 kilos of sfeeha per day here!

Then, it was time to try them. Every ingredient comes from their farms. The lamb and onion was so tasty, and I loved the crispy but fluffy dough. The juicy lamb was outstanding!

Next, they brought us some fatteh sfeeha, which came topped with ghee, garlic, and nuts. They were served in a bowl of cold, refreshing yogurt!

I loved the nutty, garlicky flavor and the light but creamy yogurt! It was the best yogurt ever!

A Day Trip to Baalbek || Lebanon Travel Vlog

In this video I take local transportation on a day trip to Baalbek, Lebanon, some of the world's largest and most intact Roman Ruins. I see the Temple of Jupiter and Temple of Bacchus.

Just 42 miles from modern day Beirut, and right on the border of Syria is Baalbek, the former city of Heliopolis. The ancient Roman complex is home to two of the grandest remaining Hellenistic Temples, the Temple of Jupiter and the Temple of Bacchus. The region has been settled by humans for thousands of years, but it was in the first century AD that these incredible feats of architecture were constructed. The Temple of Jupiter was built to the Roman Sky God while the slightly smaller, but more complete Temple of Bacchus was devoted to Dionysus, the god of wine and music. I felt so small as I walked through the remains of these glorious tributes to ancient Roman Architecture, and I practically had the entire complex to myself. This was one of my best day trips in Lebanon, and here’s how it went….

The Roman Ruins at Baalbek, Lebanon [Amazing Places 4K]

Baalbek was a Phoenician city, probably named after the Phoenician god Baal, in Greek and Roman times it was also known as Heliopolis. Baalbec reached its height during Roman times, when between the 1st and 3rd centuries colossal temples dedicated to Jupiter, Bacchus and other deities were built on site. It is still a mystery how the largest stone blocks known from antiquity, weighing more than thousand tons, were moved to the temple locations.
Baalbec is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the finest examples of Imperial Roman architecture at its apogee.
