Places to see in ( Beziers - France ) Villeneuve les Beziers

Places to see in ( Beziers - France ) Villeneuve les Beziers

Whether you are in a boat, on a bicycle or in your car, Villeneuve les Beziers is an essential step on the course of the Canal du Midi. Stop by and discover the homeland of the Occitan poet Jean Lauris.

Villeneuve les Beziers was originally a Roman settlement, but its true identity begins at the time of Charlemagne. Destroyed by fire in the Middle Ages, it was known as the Crémade Villeneuve until 1631, when it took its current name. A chateau was once home to the family members of the local feudal lord. It was destroyed in 1925 and now lays in ruins, although one of its towers has recently been renovated.

You will also find a Romanesque church from the eleventh century, whose apse and bell tower house two bells named Bernadette and Roseline which are listed historical monuments. The Canal du Midi (World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO) and the eighteenth century canal lock are part of the heritage of the town.

Places to see in ( Beziers - France ) Les Halles

The Béziers Halles of the Baltard type, were opened in 1891. More than a century and a half later, their complete renovation is undertaken and the new Halles are inaugurated in 1987. They are listed today in the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments.

In the Middle Ages was at this place one of the most venerated shrines of the city: the church of Saint-Felix. It is there that on April 7, 1247, the Viscount of Béziers, Raymond II Trencavel, after a final burst of revolt against the royal power returned his viscount in the hands of the king of France, Saint-Louis.

More than a century old, the Halles centrale of Béziers, built in the style Baltard are the ideal place to provide daily with local products. Here, we are guaranteed to be able to buy the freshest products on the market. Fishmongers, butchers, bakers, delicatessens, cheeses, fruits and vegetables, everything is there to reconnect with tradition without spending a fortune. On Tuesday and Sunday from 7 am to 1 pm, other stalls complete the offer around the market halls.

Places to see in ( Beziers - France )

Places to see in ( Beziers - France )

On a rocky crag beside the River Orb, Béziers is an understated city a few kilometres in from the Mediterranean and its long sandy beaches. These old stone streets are rarely swamped with tourists, but for five days in mid-August the Féria de Béziers brings a program of bullfights, and aficionados pour into the city.

Sightseers should begin with the Orb, which is crossed by a quaintly irregular medieval bridge far below the cathedral. And conversely, the boundless views across the river plain from this church are a real spectacle. The Orb, Canal du Midi and the Haut Languedoc Regional Park all promise outdoor escapades, and winery tours will also be on the menu in the world’s largest wine region.

The town is located on a small bluff above the river Orb, about 10 km (6.2 mi) from the Mediterranean coast, and 75 km southwest of Montpellier. At Béziers, the Canal du Midi spans the river Orb as an aqueduct called the Pont-canal de l'Orb, claimed to be the first of its kind. Béziers is one of the oldest cities in France. Research published in March 2013 shows that Béziers dates from 575 BC, making it older than Agde (Greek Agathe Tyche, founded in 525 BC) and a bit younger than Marseille (Greek Massalia, founded in 600 BC).

The site has been occupied since Neolithic times, before the influx of Celts. Roman Betarra was on the road that linked Provence with Iberia. The Romans refounded the city as a new colonia for veterans in 36–35 BC and called it Colonia Julia Baeterrae Septimanorum. Stones from the Roman amphitheatre were used to construct the city wall during the 3rd century. White wine was exported to Rome. A dolia discovered in an excavation near Rome is marked I am a wine from Baeterrae and I am five years old; another simply white wine of Baeterrae. It was occupied by the Moors between 720 and 752.

The cliff overlooking the River Orb, with its spectacular view of and from the cathedral, has been continuously occupied for 2700 years making Béziers one of the oldest towns in the whole of France. The centre of the town is the Allée Paul Riquet, a large, shaded boulevard lined with planetrees and lots of restaurants and bars. The old town is a maze of little cobbled streets with interesting artisan shops eventually ending up at the imposing St Nazaire Cathedral with its stunning views of the countryside.

Places to see in ( Beziers - France ) The nine Locks of Fonseranes

Places to see in ( Beziers - France ) The nine Locks of Fonseranes

Fonserannes Locks (French: écluses de Fonserannes, les neuf écluses) are staircase locks on the Canal du Midi near Béziers. It consists of eight ovoid lock chambers (characteristic of the Canal du Midi) and nine gates, which allow boats to be raised a height of 21.5 m, in a distance of 300 m. Whilst the flight was built as an 8-rise, to allow boats to cross the River Orb on a level, rejoining the canal a little further downstream, the crossing of the Orb was long ago replaced by an aqueduct.

Boats now enter and exit the lower end of the flight through the side of chamber seven, which is maintained at its upper level, and it is operated as a 6-rise. The eighth chambers, which lock down into the Orb, is now disused. The side exit from chamber seven causes some confusion in describing the chain of locks. While most sources now ignore the disused eighth chamber in describing the flight, many sources still describe it as a 7-rise, despite the fact that chamber seven is operated at a fixed level.

Traditional buildings such as the stables and the lock keeper's house still remain. These and the locks have made the Fonserannes Lock the third most popular tourist destination in Languedoc-Roussillon, after the Pont du Gard and the town of Carcassonne. In 1983 an inclined plane was built for boats too large for these locks to bypass them, but the project encountered severe technical problems and was abandoned in 2001 (see Fonserannes water slope).

Though Pierre-Paul Riquet rightly receives so much credit and acknowledgement for the creation of the Canal du Midi, we may forget that many individual parts of the canal were built by subcontractors other than Riquet. The subcontractors for these locks were two illiterate brothers, Michel and Pierre Medailhes. Many of the workers were women.
