Le Mont-Saint-Michel is an island commune in Normandy, France.
It is located about one kilometre off the country's northwestern coast, at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches and is 100 hectares in size.
As of 2009, the island has a population of 44.
The island has held strategic fortifications since ancient times and since the 8th century AD has been the seat of the monastery from which it draws its name.
The structural composition of the town exemplifies the feudal society that constructed it: on top, God, the abbey and monastery; below, the great halls; then stores and housing; and at the bottom, outside the walls, houses for fishermen and farmers.
Now a rocky tidal island, the Mont occupied dry land in prehistoric times.
As sea levels rose, erosion reshaped the coastal landscape, and several outcrops of granite emerged in the bay, having resisted the wear and tear of the ocean better than the surrounding rocks.
Mont Saint-Michel consists of leucogranite, which solidified from an underground intrusion of molten magma about 525 million years ago, during the Cambrian period, as one of the younger parts of the Mancellian granitic batholith.
The Mont has a circumference of about 960 metres and its highest point is 92 metres above sea level.
The tides can vary greatly, at roughly 14 metres between high and low water marks.
Popularly nicknamed St. Michael in peril of the sea by medieval pilgrims making their way across the flats, the mount can still pose dangers for visitors who avoid the causeway and attempt the hazardous walk across the sands from the neighbouring coast.
Polderisation and occasional flooding have created salt marsh meadows that were found to be ideally suited to grazing sheep.
The well-flavoured meat that results from the diet of the sheep in the salt meadow makes salt meadow lamb, a local specialty that may be found on the menus of restaurants that depend on income from the many visitors to the mount.
One of France's most recognizable landmarks, visited by more than 3 million people each year, Mont Saint-Michel and its bay are on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
Over 60 buildings within the commune are protected in France as monuments historiques.

In Normandy, France, Le Mont-Saint-Michel is a tidal island and mainland commune. The island is 7 hectares in size and is located around one kilometer off the country's northwestern coast, near Avranches, at the mouth of the Couesnon River.
This commune, once known as Mont Tombe, has a fascinating backstory. Saint-Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, founded Mont Saint Michel in 708 after seeing the archangel St. Michael in a vision. After this third and final vision, he determined to construct an oratory in honor of the heavenly persona.
The Abbey swiftly became not just an important pilgrimage site in the Christian West, but also a center of medieval culture, producing and storing a great number of manuscripts. The epithet City of the Books was given to Mont-Saint-Michel.
The island cathedral, Mont Saint-Michel, is the perfect Harry Potter Town and everything it's been talked up to be – a stunning piece of architecture and human achievement rising from a little rocky island off the coast of France. It's hard to believe it's true.
The French Revolution drove the monks out in 1791, and they finally returned in 1966 to commemorate the monastic millennium. Since 2001, two groups of monks and nuns from the Jerusalem Monastic Fraternities have lived in Mont Saint-Michel Abbey and are responsible for Abbey's administration and daily services.
In this street – Grand Rue – are endless tourism-related shops selling souvenirs and overpriced food. A few small museums and the tiny village and especially the abbey is well worth visiting.

Mont Saint Michel, Normandy, France | Complete detailed video | Must visit place in France | 4K |
Ever since I saw this place on social media i knew i had to come here..
After seeing it, I used to think all the time whether there really is such a beautiful place? Or this place has just been shown beautiful by editing or by applying filters.
Before visiting any place we do a lot of research like how to visit where to stay what to see and where to eat… so this time i have decided to make a travel guide where you can get the answers of each and every questions that comes to your mind.
Once you reach here… you will going to see a long bridge which covers a distance of 2kms from the parking. now it is up to you whether you wanna walk while appreciating the beauty of mont saint michel, or you can take the shuttle bus or even for more authenticity you can take the horse cart ride too.
Now lets talk some history…it is being said Saint-Aubert, the Bishop of Avranches, founded Mont Saint Michel in 708 after having seen the archangel Saint-Michel appear in his dreams three times. It was after this third and final vision he decided to have an oratory built in honour of the divine persona.
ALERT🚨:- The tidal waves in Mont Saint Michel reach nearly 14 metres which is the highest in Europe.
# Ticket Fee:- It is free to visit the general Mont Saint Michel area, including the town on the island. But you have to pay for Abbey and the admission fee to the abbey is €10 for adults and €8 for concession.
# Stay:- we highly recommend staying overnight to experience its magic and charm. And Airbnb i would say is a great option and in under 50-70 euro you'll easily get it.
# Restaurants:- Some are very over rated crowded and expensive... will not recommend any personal but yes i can suggest some delicacies which you must not miss..those are Andouille, salt-meadow lamb, oysters or mussels are must to taste.

Most Beautiful Places in the World - Mont Saint-Michel, France - Travel Video - VacationNation
Mont Saint-Michel, France: A simply breath-taking medieval city, built upon a rock in Normandy. This stunning city soars 302 feet upwards into the sky, creating a fantasy-like environment that almost appears to be something out of a dream.
If that weren't cool enough, it just so happens that Mont Saint-Michel was actually conceived in a dream by Bishop Aubert of Avranches.
The bishop certainly succeeded in etching his name into history books, as this beautiful site was one of the most important pilgrimage destinations during the Middle Ages. On a darker note, this historic site has also been used as a prison during the 18th century.
Perhaps with the most credit due to Mont Saint-Michel's colorful history, this architectural wonder still attracts visitors by the masses to witness it's unique splendor in person.
