Sequoia National Park - Things to do in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks
This is our (HereWeGo) summer visit to Sequoia National Park & its neighbor Kings Canyon National Park California vlog. Sequoia National Park is home to the largest trees in the world by volume. It is also home to the worlds biggest tree General Sherman and the second biggest tree General Grant. There are many hiking trails in the Giant forest area in the park. We started our trip from the Three Rivers entrance to the park. There are amazing views driving up the mountain. First we walked the Sherman Tree trail which takes you to the largest tree in the world General Sherman. After that we did the Congress trail, which is considered as one of the best trails in Sequoia National Park, if you want to see the Giant trees. We loved the walk on this trail as it has many giant trees as well as big clusters of giant trees. We specially loved The Senate tree cluster and The House tree clusters. Later on we drove our car under the Tunnel Log, which is a tunnel created under a large fallen sequoia tree. For amazing views around the park, we hiked the Moro Rock trail. It consists of about 350 step to reach the top. The panoramic views from the top are worth hiking this trail. The next day we drove the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. It is a very scenic drive with beautiful views and viewpoints along the road. The scenic road took us to the heart of the Canyon driving along the Kings river. The drive along the river is beautiful. We also stopped at the two beautiful waterfalls namely Grizzly Falls and Roaring River Falls.

3-Day Family Road Trip to Kings Canyon & Sequoia National Parks – Detailed Itinerary (Kid-Friendly):
Day 1: Arrival at Kings Canyon National Park
8:30 AM: Depart from the Bay Area.
9:30 AM: Stop at Romero Overlook Visitor Center for a bathroom break and to stretch.
11:00 AM: Stop in Fresno to fill up on gas and pick up lunch.
12:00 PM: Arrive at Kings Canyon National Park.
Big Stump Picnic Area: Enjoy lunch at the picnic tables (restrooms available).
Optional short walk to Big Stump Grove to see some large tree stumps.
1:00 PM: Drive further into the park along Highway 180.
Highway 180 follows the edge of Kings Canyon, offering amazing views of the deepest river canyon in the United States (8,200 feet measured from highest peak to canyon floor).
3:20 PM: Arrive at Boyden Cavern for a 4-5 PM cavern tour (Pre-book online as tickets may sell out).
Play beside Kings River before the tour begins.
Option to return through a small creek (wear water shoes or bring extra shoes and socks if you choose this route).
5:30 PM: Drive 10 minutes to Grizzly Falls.
Spend time enjoying the waterfall and playing in the water. If time allows, consider driving further into Kings Canyon for meadows and more waterfalls.
6:30 PM: Head to John Muir Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Exploring Sequoia National Park
8:00 AM: Depart for Sequoia National Park (about an hour’s drive).
9:00 AM: Park at the Giant Forest Museum parking area and take the shuttle to Moro Rock.
9:30 AM: Moro Rock.
10:30 AM: Take the shuttle to Crescent Meadow.
11:00 AM: Crescent Meadow: walk several short trails and see gigantic trees, some with burned trunks still standing.
12:30 PM: Take the shuttle back to the Giant Forest Museum for lunch (pack your lunch in advance).
1:30 PM: Explore the Giant Forest Museum and walk the Big Trees Trail (a short, easy trail perfect for kids).
3:00 PM: Hike the Congress Trail (General Sherman Tree, McKinley Tree, Lincoln Tree, the President Tree, and the Senate). Option to take a shorter route. Shuttle back to the parking lot.
5:00 PM: Arrive at Lodgepole Visitor Center for dinner.
Get a National Park Passport stamp.
7:00 PM: Return to John Muir Lodge.
Day 3: Final Day in Kings Canyon National Park
9:00 AM: Check out and visit Kings Canyon National Park visitor center (get another National Park Passport stamp).
9:30 AM: General Grant Tree ( second-largest tree in the world), Gamlin Cabin, Centennial Stump, and the Fallen Monarch (a hollow tree trunk you can walk through).
This short trail is stroller-friendly and takes about 30 minutes.
11:30 AM: Drive to Hume Lake for lunch.
1:00 PM: Drive to Sandy Cove on the other side of Hume Lake.
Play in the water, relax, and enjoy the clear lake with ducks and fish.
2:30 PM: Start the drive back home. Arrive back in the Bay Area before dinner.

Kings Canyon and Seqouia National Park - California, USA
Kings Canyon National Park is a national park in the southern Sierra Nevada, in Fresno and Tulare Counties, California in the United States. Originally established in 1890 as General Grant National Park, it was greatly expanded and renamed to Kings Canyon National Park on March 4, 1940. Its namesake, Kings Canyon, is a rugged glacier-carved valley more than a mile deep; the park also includes multiple 14,000-foot peaks, high mountain meadows, swift-flowing rivers, and some of the world's largest stands of giant sequoia trees. Kings Canyon is north of and contiguous with Sequoia National Park, and the two are jointly administered by the National Park Service as the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
The majority of the 461,901-acre park, drained by the Middle and South Forks of the Kings River and many smaller streams, is designated wilderness. Tourist facilities are concentrated in two areas: Grant Grove, home to General Grant (the second largest tree in the world, measured by trunk volume) and Cedar Grove/Kanawyers, located in the heart of Kings Canyon. Overnight travel is required to access most of the park's backcountry, or high country, which for much of the year is covered in deep snow. The combined Pacific Crest Trail/John Muir Trail, a popular backpacking route, traverses the entire length of the park from north to south.
General Grant National Park was initially created to protect a small area of giant sequoias from logging. Although John Muir's visits brought public attention to the huge wilderness area to the east, it took more than fifty years for the rest of Kings Canyon to be designated a national park. Environmental groups, park visitors and many local politicians wanted to see the area preserved; however, development interests wanted to build hydroelectric dams in the canyon. Even after President Franklin D. Roosevelt expanded the park in 1940, the fight continued until 1965, when the Cedar Grove and Tehipite Valley dam sites were finally annexed into the park.
As visitation rose post-World War II, further debate took place over whether the park should be developed as a tourist resort, or retained as a more natural environment restricted to simpler recreation such as hiking and camping. Ultimately, the preservation lobby prevailed and today, the park has only limited services and lodgings despite its size. Due to this and the lack of road access to most of the park, Kings Canyon remains the least visited of the major Sierra parks, with just over 600,000 visitors in 2016 compared to 1.2 million visitors at Sequoia and over 5 million at Yosemite.
Seqouia National Park is famous for its giant sequoia trees, including the General Sherman tree, the largest tree on Earth. The General Sherman tree grows in the Giant Forest, which contains five out of the ten largest trees in the world. The Giant Forest is connected by the Generals Highway to Kings Canyon National Park's General Grant Grove, home to the General Grant tree among other giant sequoias. The park's giant sequoia forests are part of 202,430 acres of old-growth forests shared by Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Indeed, the parks preserve a landscape that still resembles the southern Sierra Nevada before Euro-American settlement.

4 Hours in Kings Canyon National Park
Kings Canyon National Park is adjacent to Sequoia National Park in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. It's known for its huge sequoia trees, notably the gigantic General Grant Tree in Grant Grove. To the east, Cedar Grove is surrounded by towering granite canyon walls. From here, trails lead to Zumwalt Meadow along the Kings River, and to Roaring River Falls. The park is home to rattlesnakes, bears and cougars.

Kings Canyon National Park in ONE Day
Welcome to Kings Canyon National Park CA, USA. Home to some of the tallest trees in the world, and canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon. I visited here on a solo trip and here’s the perfect itinerary for ONE DAY in Kings Canyon.

First, travel about 2 hours through Sequoia to the end of Kings Canyon, taking to the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway.
It is one of the most unique sections of the park, and also one of America’s most remarkable drives. Make sure to stop alongside viewpoints and take plenty of self-timers, as I did.
At the end of your drive, you will find the popular trail to Mist Falls. You walk along the Kings River as the towering granite cliffs fill the sky. It’s a challenging hike, but the best way to truly experience the canyon. [ If you want a shorter hike go for Zumwalt Meadow Loop (2 hours) – 1.5 miles of trail circling a picture-perfect Sierra meadow.]
After the hike, head back towards Sequoia but take detours at Grizzly Falls and Hume Lake.
Grab a bite to eat at the Grant Grove Visitors Center and then take a ⅓ mile loop trail around Grant Grove (home to the General Grant tree, also known as the Nation's Christmas Tree) which is the second-largest tree in the world.
As you keep driving back out of Kings Canyon, toward Sequoia, you must stop at the Big Baldy Ridge Trail for sunset.
I was alone on the trail. I had 360 views for the majority of the trek. And the sunset was literally one of the best sunsets I have ever experienced. So, you’re welcome for this recommendation.
And there you have it. The perfect day in a perfectly brillant national park.

A party place in mid august. Lots of louder groups that were up late into the night.
Site 84 was technically approved for a trailer over 10 feet, but a serious squeeze to get our trailer and explorer to fit within the lines.
Some restrooms were closed, and the open ones were very crowded at night. No lights in the bathrooms.
Beautiful views, scenic byway and river driving in and around the campground.

To the east, Cedar Grove is surrounded by towering granite canyon walls. From here, trails lead to Zumwalt Meadow along the Kings River, and to Roaring River Falls. The park is home to rattlesnakes, bears and cougars.
