This small town of 600 inhabitants is home to the birthplace of Mexican independence where Miguel Hidalgo gathered the standard from the towns church and rallied the people to fight for a free Mexico.
Family Trip To Atotonilco El Alto
This is a Sunday day trip that we made as a family to visit the town of Atotonilco El Alto in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. It is roughly an hour and a half from our home in Chapala, about a 20 min drive north of La Barca. It is a very lovely colonial style working class town, not touristy in the least. There is a road that leads up into the mountains above the town that offers two different look out points with views from different angles of Atotonilco, the scenery is truly gorgeous. Atotonilco also has a wonderful park called El Taretan which is built into a ravine with a creek that runs down the middle of the park.
We visit 10 Distilleries in the Pueblo Mágico of Tequila
During our 28 day stay in the Pueblo Mágico of Tequila, Jalisco we visited 10 different tequila distilleries (and one distillery store). In order to take full advantage of every tour we always booked the highest tier tour offered. In this video we give you a brief overview of each, as well as explain costs and procedures to book the tours.

Dolores Hidalgo & Atotonilco Tour by ToursByLocals
During my short stay in San Miguel de Allende, I arranged a tour with ToursByLocals to Dolores Hidalgo & Atotonilco. Diego from Catrina Tours was my private tour guide. He and his driver picked me up at my apartment and we drove to Dolores Hidalgo. Diego showed me the church, some really good ice cream and a pottery factory. We then made our way to the Santuario de Atotonilco which is knows as the Sistine Chappel of Mexico. Then we visited a local street market and I tried some local street food.

TRAVEL VLOG || Daytrip to Atotonilco || Santuario de Atotonilco
Less than a half hour drive from San Miguel de Allende is the tiny but important & historical town of Atotonilco. The sanctuary was founded in 1740 as a spiritual retreat, and Ignacio Allende married here in 1802. Eight years later he returned with Miguel Hidalgo and a band of independence rebels en route from Dolores to San Miguel to take the shrine's banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe as their flag.Inside, the sanctuary has six chapels and is vibrant with statues, folk murals and paintings. Known as the Sistine Chapel of Mexico, the detailed artwork inside is absolutely breathtaking! The videos & pictures are NOTHING compared to being there up close. Stendhal syndrome was in full effect. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an absolute day trip from San Miguel de Allende!
