WOAHHH! I am so impressed by what I experienced today in Syria!

Welcome to the Krak des Chevaliers -- it's considered as the world's most preserved medieval castle that sits in the South Western region of the country near Homs.

It was built almost exactly 1,000 years ago, and despite being damaged a few years ago in the Syrian Civil War, it remains remarkably in tact. It was a pleasure to explore the ins and outs of this castle today -- I was the only tourist here!

The historical landmarks are just one of the MANY reasons why I have fallen in love with this Middle Eastern country. Stay tuned for my last video in Syria tomorrow -- I saved the best for last!

About Damascus: Damascus is the capital of Syria; it is also the countrys largest city, following the decline in population of Aleppo due to the battle for the city. It is colloquially known in Syria as aš-Šām and titled the City of Jasmine. Damascus is a major cultural center of the Levant and the Arab world. The city has an estimated population of 1,711,000 as of 2009. Located in south-western Syria, Damascus is the center of a large metropolitan area of 2.7 million people. Geographically embedded on the eastern foothills of the Anti-Lebanon mountain range 80 kilometres inland from the eastern shore of the Mediterranean on a plateau 680 metres above sea level, Damascus experiences a semi-arid climate because of the rain shadow effect. The Barada River flows through Damascus. First settled in the second millennium BC, it was chosen as the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate from 661 to 750. After the victory of the Abbasid dynasty, the seat of Islamic power was moved to Baghdad. Damascus saw a political decline throughout the Abbasid era, only to regain significant importance in the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods. Today, it is the seat of the central government and all of the government ministries. // Al-Hamidiyah Souq (Arabic: سوق الحميدية‎) is the largest and the central souk in Syria, located inside the old walled city of Damascus next to the Citadel. The souq is about 600 metres (2,000 ft) long and 15 metres (49 ft) wide, and is covered by a 10-metre (33 ft) tall metal arch. The souq starts at Al-Thawra street and ends at the Umayyad Mosque plaza, and the ancient Roman Temple of Jupiter stands 40 feet tall in its entrance. // The Temple of Jupiter in Damascus was built by the Romans, beginning during the rule of Augustus and completed during the rule of Constantius II. // The Umayyad Mosque (Arabic: الجامع الأموي‎), also known as the Great Mosque of Damascus (Arabic: جامع بني أمية الكبير‎, Romanization: Ğāmi Banī Umayya al-Kabīr), located in the old city of Damascus, is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the world. The mosque is also important in Islam because of its historical and eschatological reports and events associated with the mosque. [Source: wikipedia // Google]

Damascus Souq, Syria 🇸🇾

The Al-Hamidiyah Souq (Arabic: سُوق ٱلْحَمِيدِيَّة, romanized: Sūq al-Ḥamīdīyah) is the largest and the central souk in Syria, located inside the old walled city of Damascus next to the Citadel.
The souq dates back to the Ottoman era and was built along the axis of the Roman route to the Temple of Jupiter around 1780 during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid I, and later extended during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Nowadays it is one of the most popular shopping districts in Syria, being lined with hundreds of clothes emporiums, shops selling traditional crafts and jewelry, cafés, grocery stores, food stalls and ice cream parlors. Before the ongoing Syrian Civil War it was one of Damascus's main attractions and was visited by many foreigners, including Europeans and Gulf Arabs; however it still remains a popular attraction for locals and Syrians.

Although there have been many violent clashes around Damascus and in some of its districts the souq has not been affected in any way by the ongoing war, but peaceful protests and demonstrations have taken place in the nearby Medhat Pasha Souq, which extends from the Al Hamidiyah Souq.

It was one of the treasures featured in the 2005 BBC documentary Around the World in 80 Treasures presented by Dan Cruickshank.

Aleppo Syria - Inside the Spice Markets of the Souq al-Madina, 2000 Pre Civil War

I visited Syria in October 2000. Aleppo was such a beautiful city to visit. This is a clip I shot walking the Souq al-Madina, the main market in the city center adjacent to the Citadel. I've never posted this footage prior to this. 15 years and a civil war later, this area has I believe seen major change and devastation.

These images reflect more peaceful times in the heart of Aleppo, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; inhabited since perhaps as early as the 6th millennium BC. Post opening of the Suez canal, Aleppo's previous spot on the Silk Road no longer as relevant lead to isolation of Syria in the past few decades further exacerbated the situation, although perhaps it is this very decline that has helped to preserve the old city of Aleppo, its medieval architecture and traditional heritage. It won the title of the Islamic Capital of Culture 2006, and has also witnessed a wave of successful restorations of its historic landmarks, until the start of the Syrian Civil War in 2011 and the Battle of Aleppo.
The city's strategic trading position attracted settlers of all races and beliefs who wished to take advantage of the commercial roads that met in Aleppo from as far as China and Mesopotamia to the east, Europe to the west, and the Fertile Crescent and Egypt to the south. The largest covered souq-market in the world is in Aleppo, with an approximate length of 13 kilometres (8.1 miles).

Souq al-Madina, as it is locally known, is an active trade centre for imported luxury goods, such as raw silk from Iran, spices and dyes from India, and coffee from Damascus. Souq al-Madina is also home to local products such as wool, agricultural products and soap. Most of the souqs date back to the 14th century and are named after various professions and crafts, hence the wool souq, the copper souq, and so on. (from Wikipedia)
