DONCASTER ROUND-UP

Hello DONCASTER people!

It's been a while I know, but finally the DONCASTER ROUND-UP video is here!

Using information that's been sent to me by all you lovely people out there, this is the video that catches all those comments and anecdotes and whatever else you wanted me to talk about, that I either missed or got wrong in the 43 parishes of DONCASTER!

In alphabetical order, I go through the borough, detailing anything and everything you guys wanted me to! I love putting your areas on display and I've enjoyed every single one of the Doncaster parishes, they're all unique in their own way!

It's taken me six months to get through the entire district. It is such a varied part of the country, taking in things like coal mines, open farmland, waterways, some amazing buildings, some excellent nuggets of history and above all some awesome people! Thank you for letting me put your areas on display, and making Doncaster stand out!

Cheers all, enjoy the round up and I'll see you down the road.

MISSON: Bassetlaw Parish #3 of 66

Back into Nottinghamshire again now, and get ready because these Bassetlaw parishes are going to come thick and fast. Most of the district is parished, with only the towns of Worksop and Retford being unparished areas. We've already seen two of the 66 parishes in this district, and the two in question are sort of on a limb as far as the rest of them go, because Shireoaks and Rhodesia sit to the West of Worksop, only bordering each other and not bordering any other parish of Bassetlaw.

However, they aren't alone in the district insofar as being inaccessible from another Bassetlaw parish goes. Oh no. Sometimes, boundaries of any kind throw up some access problems. It's physically impossible to get to today's parish from ANYWHERE else in Bassetlaw without driving out of the district and into Doncaster or North Lincolnshire. The reason for that is, unless you're prepared to swim it, the River Idle is in your way.

We're at the very top of Nottinghamshire here - you simply cannot go any further North - this is the parish that has that pointy bit at the top if you look at on a map of the county. It's bounded by the aforementioned districts and on one road you can drive through Nottinghamshire from South Yorkshire and into Lincolnshire all within a matter of seconds.

The main village here is quirky itself too, being home to an ancient medieval moated site, the first ever church school in the UK, and one of the finest village greens I've ever had the pleasure to stand upon. Take in the lovely 1,000 year old White Horse pub or of you prefer the Angel Inn, spend some time admiring the beauty of typical Nottinghamshire-style buildings or even have a look at some former military vehicles.

Above all, enjoy the gorgeous little parish of MISSON.

HENHAM: Uttlesford Parish #3 of 60

There are many pretty villages all over this beautiful land we call home here in England, but there might not be many more like this one. When I visited this village, I honestly did not want to leave it! The locals are so friendly and it's such a gorgeous place to walk around. There's so much to see as well for a village of only 1,500 people.

We start in the South of the village and it takes about 20 minutes to walk the full length of it, maybe 25 if you walk to the church before continuing East to the other end along the High Street like I did. Honestly though, you'll want more than an hour to appreciate everything there is to see and do in the village.

Passing the school, you're greeted with the village pump on one of the numerous greens which are protected by the parish council, overlooked by the church hall, the phone box (yes it's a book exchange!) and something called the OSCA, which is like a village hall in all but name. The war memorial is right in the centre, equidistant from the church of St Mary the Virgin and the volunteer-run village shop.

Perhaps the most unique feature here would be the duckponds which line the High Street all the way from the war memorial to beyond the shop, and where they stop the road becomes much more rural in nature as it works its way between the thatched cottages towards the cemetery. This might be located in some of the best Essex farmland there is, but very few of the residents rely on land to survive here. This is very much a commuter village.

Home to the comedian Ed Byrne and the man who played Coronation Street's Fred Elliott, this is the village and the parish of HENHAM.

STAINTON: Doncaster Parish #12 of 43

If you thought that here at TVI HQ that going to a place such like as the one we're about to see here, was going to be easy given the size and population of the place, well think again.

This place won't win any awards for being the biggest or the most populated that's for sure, but sometimes the smaller the place is, the more you have time to explore and find out things about it and suddenly the video becomes a whole lot more interesting, and that's why tonight's offering is just that.

Loaded with small and charming features like a pond, a fast flowing stream, another of those phone box libraries, a park with a winding wheel style entrance and a pub boasting a restored WWII munitions cart used during the Tour de Yorkshire, this place has a lot to offer. And that is without taking about the quarries. Or the links to Maltby Colliery.

Hannah came with me for this one and genuinely did not want to leave when we'd finished. This is the delightfully pretty STAINTON.

Askern

Askern is a town and civil parish within the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, in South Yorkshire, England.

Askern Walk

Exploring places where I have never been before.

ASKERN: Doncaster Parish #19 of 43

In the North of Doncaster borough, there are a lot of farms - that's a fact you can't escape. The heavily industrialised areas fade away into open fields and countryside, with more than the odd tractor in your eyeline. The land usage is dominated by agriculture.

So where you might ask, do all these farmers go when they need some food shopping? Well. of course, being on the fringes of a large town, some of course travel South into Doncaster, whilst others prefer to have things delivered to their doors. Those who choose neither though are likely to make use of the abundance of local retailers that you'll find if you take a short stroll though this next parish.

It's a civil parish with town status, much like Maltby, only a lot smaller, about one third of the size in fact. It's even smaller than the last CP we saw with town status - Edlington - and that had an ASDA supermarket. This one has a Co-Op supermarket but most shoppers in this place are drawn more to the local rather than the chain.

For a town, it's rather unique. It's another former mining community with a proud history, but you won't find anywhere else quite like this in South Yorkshire. Nowhere else to my knowledge has a spa pool/boating like in the town centre, and a big one at that. You can't avoid it either, no matter how you might try, you will always notice it from every direction you travel into the town. Also noticeable is the massive water tower, the quaint little church and the railway line connecting Drax power station in Selby with Doncaster.

There's all that and plenty more hidden away in and around the town of ASKERN.

Today we come to a Doncaster village that is hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the world. Located away from all the local busy roads, this place has a certain charm that just isn't replicated anywhere else.

As you drive in, you cannot miss the imposing looking structure of it's once mighty Hall with it's turret like gatehouse. You also can't miss the wall that splits this village into a high part and a low part

Flanked everywhere with stone buildings, narrow streets and quaint little features. you would be forgiven for thinking this place doesn't belong in modern day South Yorkshire. In fact, when I first came here some years ago, I thought I was on the set of Emmerdale.

LOUND: Bassetlaw Parish #14 of 66

Along the River Idle there are a number of interesting villages, and we will of course see them all on this channel in due course. I don't think there going to be many like this one however. There's a huge nature reserve in this parish created by the Idle Valley and the sand and gravel pits that used to be located in the village's East.

The nature reserve is not the be all and end all of this one though. There's lots of things to see in a village that's generally quite small and out of the way. The main road to Retford lies to the West, so travelling to and from this one requires a little bit of exploration through the countryside to an extent.

What you'll find is a village that's so quiet, the only noises you'll hear generally will be the occasional tractor or the local bus service as it sweeps through on it's way to Retford or to Misson, depending on which way it's heading. The village seems to be quite a close community though, and since 1970 that community has had it's very own journal, to let residents know of what goes on here.

There's no church or chapel - both have been converted into residential properties, but the bells from the church have been moved to the neighbouring village of Sutton, so they still ring. The Hall here is used as a residential care home, situated opposite a lovely little village green, which epitomises the tranquillity of the village it serves.

All in all, TVI had a nice stroll around the parish of LOUND.

RISLEY: Erewash Parish #4 of 14

Here’s a typical linear settlement, with houses clinging to both sides of a road. However, thanks to footpaths, it’s a circular walk today. Our first major landmark of note to pass is a hotel, and straight away we’re into a piece of history. Its chief builders were the Willoughby family. Perhaps the most famous resident of the village was Sir Hugh Willoughby. He was a navigator, who sailed in 1553, with three ships, in search of the North-east passage, but ended up frozen to death with all his crew in the following January.

As a linear village, there’s no real centre but you might possibly be able to define one by the location of three buildings - two of them are the church and school. The other is the village hall. Rush Meadow is literally yards away from that with a sign telling us that the name of the village translates from Anglo Saxon to “Rush Meadow”. The village was recorded in the Domesday Book as Riselia and Riselei. Rush Meadow is also believed to be the last untouched area of the original Anglo Saxon settlement.

The church building is over 400 years old. It’s a is Grade II listed building, built for Sir Michael Willoughby as a domestic chapel to the hall in 1593. Consecrated in 1632, its one of only six built during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The Willoughby family’s coat of arms can be seen above the door, with the date 1593.

Next to the church along Derby Road is the Latin House, a fellow Grade II structure which was described by Pevsner as one of the finest buildings in the country. It was built in 1706 for Elizabeth Grey. The Latin House was part of the former Grammar School. It was built to accommodate pupils, a schoolmaster and an usher. The City separates Latin House from some more Grade II listed buildings, Latin College and Latin Cottage

There’s a story to tell here as well. After being lost for a time, a Lanx (A Roman plate) was found here, then lost, and then forged and sold to the British Museum. The fate of the original lanx is unknown. It’s just one of more interesting things about the parish of RISLEY.

BILLINGLEY: Barnsley Parish #2 of 17

When I plan where I am going to go on any given day, I always look at the map first, regardless of whether or not I actually know the place or not. I do that because sometimes even if I know the place like the back of my hand, I can still potentially miss something.

Step forward today's parish then, because this is a place I thought I knew pretty well. Small village, small community, the average run of the mill kind of landmarks to look at, only this one has a a very big feature that until I looked at the map I didn't know existed!

Lined with stone walls, the feature in question is a Christmas Tree Farm, stocked to the gills with evergreen spruce all year round, ready for the the festive season. It's not the only thing that this village surprised me with either. Take a look at the old wooden bus shelter and with it, the memories of a bygone era when this place was under Hemsworth District which no longer exists.

Barnsley certainly doesn't have anywhere else quite like this within it's boundaries. This one may be small, but it is 100% full of unique charm.

This is BILLINGLEY.

Forgotten Spas of Yorkshire

We've all heard of Harrogate, Ilkley and Scarborough - but what about Slaithwaite, Askern or Wetherby? They've all had them, but only shone brightly for a very short time - mostly 1820-1890 and then disappeared.

Others like Ripon came on far too late 1904/1905 and places like Boston Spa were left behind by the age of steam - although that mode of transport didn't help Goathland (North York Moors) that didn't even have a spa spring - although has the 70ft high Mallyan Spour waterfall!

AUSTERFIELD: Doncaster Parish #25 of 43

Alright guys another Doncaster parish today, meaning two in a row! Not something I usually want to do, but last week I heavily focused on Doncaster, so there's a lot more of the borough to come this week. I've got some more Bassetlaw and Barnsley ones coming in couple of days time though, so fear not everyone!

So today's parish is probably one of the borough's most historically important. This is the place where one of the Pilgrim Fathers, Willaim Bradford, was born and baptized before he became a pioneer of the New World. There's a crazy amount of references to him in this village, from Willaim Bradford Close, to a pub and eatery named after his ship, The Mayflower.

The story of the Pilgrim Fathers might dominate the village, but there's plenty of other things to see here too. The Mosaic Reserve is a prime example of that - a literal mosaic of flora and fauna which is used by the neighbouring Study Centre, educating the local children about the environment, all on an old sand quarry.

Then there's a major industrial unit, as well as two borehole pumping stations that drill into the Doncaster aquifer providing the surrounding area with drinking water. As if that wasn't enough, South Yorkshire's only airport - Doncaster Sheffield Airport, also known as Robin Hood - is shared between this parish and neighbouring Finningley, although as an international airport, it belongs to neither.

There's a lot going on in a village that doesn't have a massive population. You're never far away from something interesting in the parish of AUSTERFIELD.

HIGH MELTON: Doncaster Parish #17 of 43

Don't adjust your sets, today's video is going up earlier than it's usual 4pm slot because I have some errands to run around that time later.

Today we get a look at another village in Doncaster. This one is home to a few things that might be of interest, but there's one particular feature that eclipses the others. That feature is the huge former college campus right in the centre of the village that used to belong to Doncaster College. It has since been sold, and will soon be putting Doncaster on the map in the TV and film industry.

The imposing buildings that make up the college campus all still stand and in this video we do get a little sneak peek at some of them, seeing as you can find yourself accessing the site through the church...weirdly, no signs tell you you're about to enter private land.

Speaking of land, this place has an abundance of woodland areas within it's boundaries, the most notable of which is an actual wood in the parish's extreme North Eastern corner, but look around you anywhere here and you'll see trees. The whole village once used to be part of a much bigger, denser wood until some of it was cleared by various historical groups.

Old buildings? Yep there's lots of those too, plenty of old stone houses and farms, including the Hall, which is designated by Doncaster Council as being the centre of the conservation area that encapsulates the parish. There's a rather gruesome tale behind one of the street names in this village too, involving some sheep rustling and a noose that caused the perpetrator to hang himself. Nasty stuff but it's things like that I come to find out about!

See if you can find anything else to add to the account I've given to the woodland wonder of HIGH MELTON.

TODWICK: Rotherham Parish #25 of 31

Nestled between two much larger places in Anston and Aston, if you drive along the A57 between Sheffield and Worksop, you will come to one of the loveliest villages the borough of Rotherham has to offer.

Originally I thought that this one didn't have much to film in it, but how wrong I was. With the aid of a few locals in a Facebook group, and a chance meeting with one of the villagers whilst I was there, I have managed to put this one together!

With notable features ranging from a historic tree to an old medieval church, a moated manor house that has been rebuilt to a redesigned dual carriageway, plus a plethora of famous residents to it's name, you cannot deny this is one of those places you would just love to live in! Why wouldn't you too, when the locals go out of their way to help you capture parts of the village you just wouldnt know about? I owe a huge thanks to two individuals in particular for permissions to film things here.

The parish council website has also come in very handy for this one too, aiding me with the symbols and imagery associated with the village shield, seen in no less than three places around the village.

Beautiful countryside, friendly folk and a sense of general wellbeing all await you when you set foot in TODWICK.

STAINBOROUGH: Barnsley Parish #5 of 17

I've said it before and and I will say it again, Barnsley is not all about coal mining. In fact, most of the parishes in the borough couldn't be further away from coal mining with their history. This one certainly falls into that latter category.

It might be small but this one packs a punch when it comes to history. There are two settlements here, sandwiching a castle which has been repurposed from being the home of the Earl of Strafford to being a college for residential adult education. Set in some lovely grounds with (on a clear day at least) some good views around, the whole area is loaded with historical buildings.

Take for example, the Dutch Barn, with it's tall sandstone pillars, or perhaps Steeple Lodge, a house built in the style of a church. You could even argue that the pub - the Strafford Arms - has a unique architectural feeling to it.

There's not a lot going on in the villages themselves but then, why does there need to be? This is certainly a tourist-y area of Barnsley, attracting people from all over the borough and beyond in the summer to enjoy the castle and the gardens...so during the winter, these villages are meant to be sleepy. Quiet they may be but this YouTuber likes it that way.

We're starting out ascent up into the highlands of South Yorkshire as we visit STAINBOROUGH.

Doncaster Walk: Town / City Centre【4K】

Located in South Yorkshire is the town of Doncaster.

Its history dates back to around 71 AD when the Romans, under emperor Vespasian, built a fort in the area, calling it Danum. It became a town in 1194 when Richard I granted Doncaster a charter.

Owing to its location and thoroughfare between the north and the south, Doncaster became a key location in the stagecoach trade providing rest for horses and their passengers. This led to horse breeding in the town, and subsequently, the building of Doncaster Racecourse. Racing fans will know this as the venue of the St Leger, one of the five Classics of the flat racing season, taking place each September since 1776.

One of the key landmarks of the town is St George's Minster, commonly referred to as Doncaster Minster. This was built between 1854 and 1858 to replace a much older Norman church which burned down in 1853. The current neo-Gothic church is Grade I listed.

Doncaster was once a key location for coal mining, where the product was transported via the River Don and connecting canals to nearby industrial towns and cities, namely Sheffield, Rotherham and Scunthorpe. A large number of mining jobs were lost in the 1980s due to the closure of coal mines. On a lighter note, butterscotch sweets were invented in Doncaster in the 19th century. They consist of brown sugar cooked to 116 °C/240 °F, mixed with butter and cream.

In the 1960s the Frenchgate Shopping Centre opened. Originally called the Arndale Centre, it was renamed to reflect its location just adjacent to French Gate. In northern towns 'gate' is a common street name suffix, derived from the old Norse, 'gata' as a throwback to the time of the Danelaw that followed the Viking invasions of the 8th and 9th centuries.

Famous people from Doncaster include Jeremy Clarkson, Kevin Keegan and Louis Tomlinson (of One Direction fame... apparently).

HAMPOLE: Doncaster Parish #14 of 43

Doncaster is a historically diverse place. The town itself has a lot of history, but once you get out into the sticks, you realise just how much the entire borough has too, and not all of it you would expect to know much about, especially when the parish in today's video features some history more associated with Nottingham, some 30-40 miles away.

We have seen though even in just the handful of parishes in South Yorkshire that have been featured on the channel, how England as a whole is intrinsically linked together, like a woven mesh of fabric with layers criss-crossing each other throughout.

Perhaps then the legend of Robin Hood, who's name instantaneously brings Sherwood Forest to mind, makes some form of sense to have some history associated with it in the West of Doncaster, which was once a thick dense woodland. In fact, most of the area of this parish was covered with trees, forming Barnsdale Forest, which now only exists in clumps rather than the swathe of leaves it was.

A connection to Robin Hood isn't all in this place either. There's some old railway history too and an abandoned mansion with a gruesome story behind one of it's former residents. On top of all that, one of the country's major roads runs through the parish )whilst also providing the only road access to the cricket club). Oh and di I mention there are two villages in this parish too, the second one home to a grand old hall and church rebuilt after a 19th century fire.

There's a lot to take in here. Step forward HAMPOLE.
