Adventures: A Weekend in Northeast Ohio
We had time for one last weekend away before my friend headed back to China. This time, we decided to explore parts of our home state of Ohio.
A drive through Coshocton County prompted a quick stop at Roscoe Village, a restored canal town on the Ohio & Erie Canal. We then headed to Holmes County, the heart of Ohio's Amish country. Picturesque views and delicious local foods coupled with quaint small towns make for an ideal place to visit. We took a short drive through Cuyahoga Valley National Park for some breathtaking waterfalls on our way to the corner of the state; Ashtabula County. With its lakeshore and lighthouses, the Grand River wine region, and the most covered bridges of any county in Ohio, Ashtabula County had no shortage of things to see.

Highlights of Ashtabula Historic Harbor, OH | Lake Erie | Where to Stay, Eat and Play
The first time we stayed at the Michel Cahill Bed and Breakfast in Ashtabula, OH, we knew we would be back. In fact, on our way home, we made reservations to stay the following month. Before the end of the summer, we visited again. Read more about our visit on my blog, No Shoes Just Travel. We can't seem to get enough of this wonderful historic harbor area, and here's why.
First of all, Joann and Bob Surbella are exceptional hosts. They are welcoming and genuinely interested in making their guests feel at home. They are knowledgeable about the surrounding area and suggest where to eat, shop and play. Read more about them at:
But it doesn't stop there. We have found that shopkeepers, restaurant owners, and people we meet are friendly and want to share their town with you. In addition, there is something for everyone. Boating, hiking, fishing, shopping, and more are just steps away from the harbor district. Historians will enjoy the Maritime Museum, The Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum, and the covered bridges. Ashtabula County is home to 19 covered bridges, including the longest in the US, the Smolen-Gulf Covered Bridge. Wine connoisseurs will enjoy the 30 wineries throughout the area, each with its own personality. And if you are a foodie, Ashtabula has you covered. With a variety of restaurants in the Historic Harbor district alone.

Named after their dog, Fat Sally's is where antique store meets flea market and then invites Etsy to join them. It's a combination of antiques, and local artisan finds. A Look Inside the Michael Cahill B & B | Historic Ashtabula Harbor | Lake Erie, OH (with narration)
The Michael Cahill Bed and Breakfast, located in Ashtabula, OH, is one of the most beautifully decorated and cared for homes in which we have stayed. Situated on top of a scenic hill in the Historic Ashtabula Harbor, this majestic home was built in 1887 by Michael Cahill, an emigrant from Ireland who became a prosperous innkeeper. Proprietors Jo Anne and Bob Surbella, who acquired the B&B in 2018, take great care to ensure their visitors are comfortable and treated like treasured guests. There are four well-appointed rooms to choose from, each with its own private bath. Three are on the second floor, and one is on the first floor adjacent to the dining room.
