Places to see in ( Ashford - UK )
Places to see in ( Ashford - UK )
Ashford is a town in the county of Kent, England. Ashford lies on the River Great Stour at the south edge of the North Downs, about 61 miles southeast of central London and 15.3 miles northwest of Folkestone by road. Ashford has been a market town since the 13th century, and a regular market continues to be held.
Ashford has been a communications hub and has stood at the centre of five railway lines since the 19th century. The arrival of the railways became a source of employment and contributed to the town's growth. With the opening of the international passenger station it is now a European communications centre, with new lines running between London and the Channel Tunnel (via High Speed 1). The M20 motorway also links Ashford to those two destinations for road traffic.
The town has been marked as a place for expansion since the 1960s and appeared on several Government plans for growth. Changes have included the County Square shopping centre, the redevelopment of the Templer Barracks at Repton Park, and the award-winning Ashford Designer Outlet. In the 1970s, a controversial ring road scheme and construction of the multi-storey Charter House building destroyed significant parts of the old town, though some areas were spared and preserved.
St Mary's Church in Ashford has been a local landmark since the 13th century, and expanded in the 15th. Today, the church functions in a dual role as a centre for worship and entertainment. Ashford has two grammar schools; the Norton Knatchbull School and Highworth Grammar School.
By road, Ashford is about 61 miles (98 km) southeast of central London, 20.9 kilometres (13.0 mi) southeast of Maidstone, and 15.3 miles (24.6 km) northwest of Folkestone. The town lies at the intersection of two valleys in Kent – the south edge of the North Downs and the valley of the River Stour, at the confluence of the Great Stour and East Stour rivers. This made it an ideal place for a settlement. The Borough of Ashford lies on the eastern edge of the ancient forest of Andredsweald or Anderida. This originally stretched as far west as Hampshire and formed the basis from which the Weald is formed.
St Mary's parish church lies in the town centre. Parts of it date from the 13th century, including a brass of the first rector, Robert de Derby. A Mk. IV tank built in Lincoln and used in World War I was presented to the town on 1 August 1919 to thank the townsfolk for their war efforts. It is situated in St Georges Square near the town centre.
H.S. Pledge & Sons Ltd built two flour mills in Ashford, and became an important employer in the town. The Corn Exchange, situated at the junction of Bank Street and Elwick Road, opened on 3 December 1861. Ashford's main library originally opened in 1966 on a war-damaged site on Church Road. The Ashford Green Corridor is a linear park alongside the two main rivers through the town, which is protected from development by lying on the main flood plain.

Ashford, Kent Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Kent, and around 15 miles southwest of Canterbury, is the town of Ashford (not to be confused with the town of Ashford in Surrey!)
The origins of Ashford can be traced back to 893 AD when a settlement was established here by Saxons escaping a Viking raid. The name is derived from Old English 'æscet', meaning ash trees and 'ford', meaning shallow river crossing. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it is recorded as 'Essetesford'.
In 1243 a market charter was granted to Ashford by Henry III. Early industry in the town included agriculture and pottery. During the late 13th century, St Mary the Virgin Church was built, and stands at the very centre of the town to this day, although much of the building was restored in the 15th century including the 37-metre/120ft tower. The church is Grade I listed.
From the mid-19th century the rail industry would transform Ashford. It began in 1842 with the opening of its first station. It was situated on a line between London and Folkestone. Further lines to Canterbury, Hastings and Maidstone were added, making Ashford a junction station. In 1847 the Ashford locomotive works was built by the South Eastern Railway. This brought hundreds of jobs into the town. To keep up with the influx of workers, an area known as Alfred Town was established just southeast of the town centre, which later became known as New Town. At its peak around 1300 people were employed by the works. The locomotive workshops would eventually close in 1962 although it wasn't until the early 1980s that the railway works closed altogether.
In 1919 a British Mark IV tank was presented to the town in recognition of its response to the National War Savings appeal. It was delivered by rail and met by a Tanks Corps Crew who drove it to St George's Square where it has remained ever since.
In 1994 work began on rebuilding Ashford's station into what would become Ashford International. This would feature two separate areas: one for domestic trains and one for trains coming to and from mainland Europe via the then brand new Eurostar. In 2003 section 1 of High Speed 1 connected London with the Channel Tunnel. In 2007 section 2 opened, along with Ebbsfleet International Station, which is situated around 35 miles northwest of Ashford. The opening of Ebbsfleet International caused a reduction in services from Ashford to Paris from 12 a day to just three, plus a daily service to Disneyland. In September 2020 it was announced that, due to a decline in ticket sales following the pandemic, both Ashford and Ebbsfleet would suspend their Eurostar services until further notice. At the time of writing (June 2022), the latest estimate is 2023 at the earliest. On a more positive note, there are frequent high speed trains running to London St Pancras, taking just under 40 minutes, so travel to the continent by rail is still possible. These trains also make Ashford a viable commuter town for those working in the capital.
Novelist Frederick Forsyth comes from Ashford.

5 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Hastings
Hastings is an attractive seaside resort popular for its sporting and cultural events, as well as for its association with the famous Battle of Hastings of 1066 (an event that in fact took place at Battle, six miles away). Although its importance as one of the Cinque Ports ended due to a series of destructive floods and repeated attacks by the French at the end of the 14th century, the town experienced another heyday in the 19th century when it became a seaside resort, taking Brighton as its model.
Let's see 5 tourist attractions in Hastlings
1. Net Lofts and Hastings Fishermen's Museum
2. Hastings Castle
3. Old Town
4. 1066 Battle of Hastings: Abbey and Battlefield
5. Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve

10 Most Hated Towns in England
What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.
