Places to see in ( Ascoli Piceno - Italy ) Piazza del Popolo

This site was renovated in the 16th Century, after having suffered a period of abandonment and unauthorized building; its later restoration followed the principles of elegance, harmony and proportion. When tourists see Piazza del Popolo for the first time, they are struck by its elegance, harmony and proportion.
The impressive architecture, the portico design, the beautiful paving and the well-though-out perspective are the pirncipal endowments of this piazza, certainly one of the most impressive sites in Ascoli Piceno.

The piazza is done in travertine and is surrounded by elegant Renaissance-style buildings bearing lively colonnades and decorations. Palazzo dei Capitani fronts Piazza del Popolo in a majestic way, and this magnificent building's name derives from the fact that it was once the headquarters of a powerful Medieval order, the so-called Captains (Capitani in Italian). A series of unfortunate events compromised and changed the Palazzo's original design: a 15th-Century fire caused the destruction of the city archives and the building's facade. Both were subsequently rebuilt and, later, Pope Paul III' s statue and its fantastic portico were added.

The construction of Saint Francis's Church took almost 200 years; it was built to commemorate the figure of Saint Francis, who spent several years in Ascoli Piceno. The Romanesque, travertine facade features three finely-decorated portals, s well as the statue of Pope Julius II, positioned on atop the largest. The Church's three aisles boast octagonal pillars, while the majestic presbytery's interior is rich in precious artworks and paintings.

The wooden Crucified Christ is among the most famous works of art in this Church; it is located on the left aisle and, according to belief, it once bled, thus attracting hundreds of worshippers and pilgrims every year. Piazza del Popolo is the vibrant heart of Ascoli, the people's meeting point and the venue for cultural events and activities. For instance, the Quintana is an important historical re-enactment with a joust, parade and flag throwing, ladies in costume, archers and musicians that decorate this charming spot every year.

Ascoli Piceno, Italy (by Scenic Gems)

Many of the buildings in the central historical part of the city are built using marble called travertino, a grey-hued stone extracted from the surrounding mountains. Its central Renaissance square, Piazza del Popolo (People's Square) is surrounded by a number of buildings utilizing this stone, now often hosting open-air markets.

Places to see in ( Ascoli Piceno - Italy ) Piazza Arringo

Places to see in ( Ascoli Piceno - Italy ) Piazza Arringo

The Piazza Arringo, also known as the piazza dell'Arengo, is the oldest monumental piazza in the city of Ascoli Piceno. Rectangular in form, numerous important monuments face the piazza including: the palazzo Fonzi, the palazzo dell'Arengo from the 13th century (also known as the palatium Aringhi), the Bishop's residence, the Cathedral of Saint Emygdius, the baptistery of Saint John, the diocesan museum, and the palazzo Panichi.

The piazza's name comes from the middle ages when Ascoli became a free comune and used this site for public meetings of the parliament, also known as arringhi, arenghi or arringhe: an assembly of citizens gathered to deliberate. This became the most important center of public events and social life of the city, and several authors name it as the place of the ancient Roman forum of Ascoli.

Giuseppe Marinelli says that in 1152 a platform was erected in the piazza that would be used by public speakers. It was here that St. Francis of Assisi, in 1215, and later St. James of the Marches (in 1446 and 1471) spoke to the citizens of Ascoli. In 1355, after the expulsion of Galeotto I Malatesta and Vanni di Vendibene, the Statues of the People were drawn up to replace the Statues of the Comune.

In the middle ages at the center of the piazza was a gigantic elm tree. The administrators of the town would come together underneath the tree to discuss town business. From Francesco Bartonini d'Arquata's chronicles of Ascoli, we learn that on February 7, 1369 the great elm was blown down in a great storm that hit the city. Bartolini wrote: «cecidit ulmus maxima et antiquissima, quae stabat in arengho». The tree was replaced by a new one which had to be replaced in 1373. Documents of the era speak of this last tree up until the end of the 15th century. The tree remained there for about a century, but when this one died it was not replaced.

The piazza has been used for military parades, games, and tournaments related to religious festivals linked to the city's patron saint, Saint Emygdius. Among these it is worth mentioning that of 1462, made famous by the victory of the noble woman, Menichina Soderini, who beat Ludovico Malvezzi of Bologna in a horse riding competition. In 1882 Nicola Cantalamessa made a sculpture of King Victor Emmanuel II which was placed in the piazza. After the second world war the statue of the king was removed and can now be seen in the public gardens. Today in the piazza two elliptical fountains made of travertine can be found. They were made by Giovanni Jecini and embellished with bronze sculptures by Giorgio Paci.

Tourism Italy : Visit Marche best places to visit and things to do

The Marche, a multicoloured region !

Have you ever been to Marche ? Have you even heard about it ?
Hope our post will make you want to visit it

Be marvel at the wide range of landscapes while discovering this region : from mountains and, hills to sand, or white limestone beaches.
There also are several natural parks, no less than twelve to explore.

Ascoli Piceno - The 100 towers' city

Ascoli Piceno is the southernmost Province in Marche. The area slopes down from the Apennines to the sea, passing through the Sibilline Mountains that rise up along the border with Umbria, and creating a formation of hills in the east towards the coastline. This sequence of hills, singing with the changing hues of the orchards and cultivated fields, gently descend from the Apennines to the sea, turning the landscape into a palette of colors.

The characteristic buildings, streets and piazzas tell the story of centuries of history. From the facades of its Medieval buildings to its old maze of streets and trails, Ascoli Piceno is a town of art, culture and strong traditions.
It is also a cohesive and harmonious mix, due to the widespread use of travertine marble for everything from simple buildings to palaces, from the churches to the pavement of its piazzas.

Those who enjoy trekking within nature can hike along the wooded trails and slopes of the Sibilline Mountains, perhaps en route to the Sibilla Cave, named after the prophetess who reputedly lived there and wandered its villages, churches and historical landmarks. Nesting nearby is Lake Pilato where, according to legend, Pontius Pilate was dragged beneath its surface by buffaloes.

The key element in the local cuisine is olive oil; it enhances both the authenticity and simplicity of every course. The fresh egg pastas are among the leading dishes, from simple tagliatelle to Campofilone maccheroncini and chitarrine.
The traditional eve of holiday menus includes spaghetti in tuna sauce, green olives and tomatoes. Alternatively, soups are made with cereals or legumes sourced from the nearby mountains (thinke wheat, lentils and beans).
The traditional second course is a mixed fry (fritto misto all’ascolana), featuring the renowned local olives, stuffed with meat, liver and tomatoes and then deep-fried. They can be served as an appetizer or as a snack.

Caffè Meletti, Ascoli Piceno, Marche, Italy, Europe

Caffè Meletti is a historic café located in Piazza del Popolo in Ascoli Piceno, located to the left of the Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo. It is part of the Association of Historic Places in Italy. The opening of the restaurant dates back to 18 May 1907 and since then has been known for its refined refinement. In the city it has always been considered the meeting place of the most illustrious characters, as well as a meeting point for culture and social life. The building still retains the charm of the Liberty style. The antique pink color of the external façade distinguishes it and differentiates it among all the historic buildings in the square, but at the same time manages to harmonize with them, thanks to its architectural lines. The building was designed by engineer Marco Massimi and elevated in the years between 1881 and 1884 to house the Palazzo delle Poste and Telegrafi. The factory insists on the same area where in the previous centuries the Picchetto della Dogana insisted. The building ceased its postal function in the first few years of the new century, when it was transferred to a wing of the nearby Palazzo San Filippo. The real life of coffee began on December 22, 1903, when Silvio Meletti, an industrial liquor producer, already owner of a sales activity of his products since 1880, later transformed into a coffee-brewery, bought the building at a public auction . Having become the owner, he decided to use the building to open a larger café. He commissioned the transformation of the building to Enrico Cesari, an engineer, and chose the decorator Pio Nardini as a painter, both very active in Ascoli in those years. The Caffè Meletti took its name from its owner and was inaugurated on the evening of May 18, 1907. In 1981 the Ministry of Cultural and Environmental Heritage declared it to be of historical and artistic interest. After 83 years of activity it was closed in 1990 leaving a huge void in the social life of the Ascoli citizenship. Six years later, in 1996, it was purchased by the Cassa di Risparmio di Ascoli Piceno Foundation, which subjected it to a detailed restoration and returned it to the city on December 19, 1998. The historic restaurant was reopened with a new inauguration presided by the then mayor Roberto breed. On September 21, 2010, Caffè Meletti was closed to be restored and modernized, reopening November 20, 2011 after several months of work. The most important change concerned the usability of the entrance on Via del Trivio with the restoration of the internal gallery, disused in 1921. In the time of his life the Café has known and included among its illustrious casual visitors also Mario Del Monaco, Beniamino Gigli , Pietro Mascagni, Ernest Hemingway, Renato Guttuso, Jean Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Mario Soldati, and politicians of national standing such as Sandro Pertini and Giuseppe Saragat. The peculiarity of the historic venue in Ascoli is the tasting of the anisetta con la mosca, or rather the liqueur into which a coffee bean is added into the glass. We recall the definition of Trilussa when he wrote: How many fairy tales and sonnets inspired me by Meletti. Anisetta is an aniseed liqueur made according to the Meletti recipe, perfected in 1870 by Silvio Meletti. The company Caffè Meletti srl was acquired by the Cassa di Risparmio di Ascoli Piceno Foundation, which decided to open a restaurant on the first floor of the cafe, which in the summer season has an extension on the terrace overlooking the square. The front facade, in neoclassical style, is enriched by a front arcade with arcades and ceiling frescoed by Giovanni Picca, Ascoli painter and decorator of the second half of the nineteenth century. The pictorial motifs, linked to the original postal function of the building, were brought to light again during the restoration work in 1998. On the first floor there are five windows surmounted by arches that offer the same Renaissance friezes as the others in the square of the people. On the top floor there is the large balcony enclosed by the light parapet. The interior environment and the aesthetic decorations of the Caffè Meletti respond to the liberty style. Even today the original carved and carved wooden furnishings are present and used. There are also large wall mirrors, sofas covered in green velvet, small round tables with Carrara marble tops and heavy cast iron feet. The ceiling of the ground floor room was painted by Pio Nardini with the fresco technique, between 1906 and 1907. The artist dedicated the theme of his paintings to anisette, depicting cherubs between anise branches.
