Episode- #06 | Yathra to Suwaiq | സുവൈക്കിലേക്കുള്ള യാത്ര
Al Suwaiq (Arabic: السويق) is a coastal town in the region Al Bāţinah, in northeastern Oman.[1] It is located at around 23°50′58″N 57°26′19″ECoordinates: 23°50′58″N 57°26′19″E. The name of the town refers in Arabic Language to Market, it is named by this name because it located in the central of AL Batina Region and attracted the people who lived in the mountains and also people who lived by the region’s coast to buy and sell goods.
A’Suwaiq is one of Al-Batinah-north governorates’ wilayat. It is 48 km wide and 80 km long. The nature of this wilayat blends four terrains: coasts, plains, mountains and valleys. A’Suwaiq is special for its long coastline and known as the largest wilaya in Oman. It is 135 km far from the capital Muscat. A’Suwaiq bordered by: Al Mosina’a from the east, Al-Khaboura from the west, the Gulf of Oman from north and Al-Hoqain from the south.
There are about 20 historic buildings (houses, castles, forts and fortress) distributed in its villages. Most of these historic buildings have deteriorated and need to be restored. The most famous forts are: A’Suwaiq fort, Al Tharmad fort, Al Hilal fort, Al Mghabsha fort, Al Borusheed fort. Also, there is an old mosque called Al Sabbara. This mosque was built during the reign of Ahmed bin Sa’aeed.
A’Suwaiq fort: It mediates A’Suwaiq, in A’Suwaiq souq (old market), and the entrance of the fort facing the sea. Its rectangular shape contains three circular-shaped towers and one square shape. It is 60 meters length and 43 meters wide. Inside the fort there is a small fort. The fort used to be the headquarters of the governor. It was built by Mud, stones and Omani plaster, and it was restored by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture in 1992.
Al Mabrah Village is affiliated to willayat As’Souaiq. Its location is near the Western Hajar Mountains. The village's tourist appeal derives from its outstanding geographic location, the scenic views, and the geometric design of Aflaj which are coming from Wadi Al Asdani. This falaj extended to 3 km from the wadis’ heart to the village. Also, it is considered as the main water source for irrigation in Al Mabrah village.

Al Suwaiq
Visitors never realise that the Wilayat of al Suwaiq is one of the biggest commercial markets in the Batinah North Governorate, that it is known locally for its numerous souqs and that the town is full of modem shops. They are also generally unaware of the fact that the emblem of this coastal wilayat is a four-legged desert-browsing ship - in other words, a camel. These are two of the anomalies about this place. Firstly, the name of the wilayat - al Suwaiq - is a diminutive of ,souq, despite the fact that there have always been numerous souqs in the town and its surrounding villages. Secondly, despite the fact that sea-going vessels anchor off its beautiful shore, the wilayat's emblem is a ship of the desert. However, the visitor will find that these anomalies evaporate once he sees this beautiful wilayat and its prosperous town or bathes in its clear blue water and he will forget his cares if he goes out into the countryside and visits places like the sprawling ancient village of al Hailain, nestling between high mountains and bisected by a wadi of date groves and junipers. With one hundred villages, Al Suwaiq is the biggest wilayat in the Batinah North Governorate. It has the highest population density of any wilayat and the third largest number of inhabitants after the Wilayat of Seeb in the Governorate of Muscat and the Wilayat of Salalah in the Governorate of Dhofar.
It borders on al Musana'ah to the east, al Khabourah to the west and the Niyabat of al Hawqain in the Wilayat of Rustaq to the south. Most of its population live along the 70-Kilometre coastline which forms its northern boundary. AL Suwaiq's long history is reflected in its numerous forts and castles - which include al Suwaiq Fort, al Tharmad Fort, Al Hilal Fort and al Maghabishah Fort - and the old mud walls around its old residential quarters. Where is the camel? This proud and beautiful animal that roams the sands is the emblem of the wilayat and camels can be seen in Suwaiq's desert tracts, either out in the open, or sheltering in the shade of a sumr or ghaf tree, or travelling over the bare terrain in small groups like the romantic caravans of old.Suwaiq's other attractions include its lush green wadis, mountains and wild life, the village of al Jahour in Wadi al Jahawar and the fresh water springs which bubble up among the rocks in the village of Dhayyan. The land is watered by 31 flowing aflaj including the aflaj of Baldat Mashayeq, Mabrah and al Hailain.
Traditional Occupations
Traditional products and occupations include fishing, halwa making, silver jewellery, including necklaces and khanjars, weaving, animal husbandry, carrpentry, palm wickerwork and leather work.

Oman (Arabic: عُمَان), officially the Sultanate of Oman (Arabic: سلْطنةُ عُمان Salṭanat(u) ʻUmān), is a country on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia and the oldest independent state in the Arab world. Located in a strategically important position at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the country shares land borders with the United Arab Emirates to the northwest, Saudi Arabia to the west, and Yemen to the southwest, and shares maritime borders with Iran and Pakistan. The coast is formed by the Arabian Sea on the southeast and the Gulf of Oman on the northeast. The Madha and Musandam exclaves are surrounded by the UAE on their land borders, with the Strait of Hormuz (which it shares with Iran) and the Gulf of Oman forming Musandam's coastal boundaries. Muscat is its capital and largest city.
From the late 17th century, the Omani Sultanate was a powerful empire, vying with the Portuguese Empire and the British Empire for influence in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. At its peak in the 19th century, Omani influence or control extended across the Strait of Hormuz to modern-day Iran and Pakistan, and as far south as Zanzibar. When its power declined in the 20th century, the sultanate came under the influence of the United Kingdom. For over 300 years, the relations built between the two empires were based on mutual benefits. The UK recognized Oman's geographical importance as a trading hub that secured their trading lanes in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean and protected their empire in the Indian sub-continent. Historically, Muscat was the principal trading port of the Persian Gulf region. Muscat was also among the most important trading ports of the Indian Ocean.
Sultan Qaboos bin Said was the hereditary leader of the country, which is an absolute monarchy, from 1970 until his death on 10 January 2020. His cousin, Haitham bin Tarik, was named as the country's new ruler following his death. As by the rules of the monarchy, the son of the Sultan is usually announced as the new monarch. However, Sultan Qaboos bin Said did not have any children, therefore he wrote in his will his suggested Sultan as he sees most suitable, and in this case the royal family agreed to announce the next Sultan to be Haitham bin Tarik.
Al-Bāţinah (Arabic: ٱلْبَاطِنَة) was one of the regions (Mintaqat) of Oman. On 28 October 2011, Al-Batinah Region was split into Al Batinah North Governorate and Al Batinah South Governorate.
The region occupied an important location on the coast of Gulf of Oman. It lay between Khatmat Malahah in the north and Ras al-Hamra in the south, and confined between Al Hajar Mountains in the west and the Gulf of Oman in the east. Most of Oman's population were in that region, because of the green plains between the Hajar Mountains and the sea.
Al Batinah Region contained the largest number of provinces (wilayat), numbering twelve: Sohar, Ar Rustaq, Shinas, Liwa, Saham, Al-Khaburah, Suwayq, Nakhal, Wadi Al Maawil, Al Awabi, Al-Musannah, Barka. Suwayq is considered as the biggest wilayah in the Batinah region.
Sohar was the regional capital. It is a populous city with a corniche, fish souq and numerous mosques.
Al-Musannah or Al-Mussanah (Arabic: المصنعة) is a town in the Al Batinah Region of northern Oman. As of 2020 Ecensus it had a population of 99,204.
