Kharkhorin & Erdene Zuu Hyid (Mongolia) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Kharkhorin & Erdene Zuu Hyid in Mongolia.

In Kharkhorin, former residence of those who once ruled Mongolia, today there is little left to see. However, a few mysterious sites remain which, along with the Erdene Zuu Monastery, are highly evocative of this ancient city in Central Mongolia. For thirty two years Kharkhorin was the centre of one of the most powerful empires in the world. After the break-up of the Soviet Union, the Erdene Zuu Monastery became active once again. Up until 1938, over sixty individual buildings that housed fifteen hundred devout lamas, stood on the monastery grounds and it is believed that as many as ten thousand lamas once lived there. Kharkhorin can be traced back to 1222 which was when Ghengis Khan expanded the former main base of the Kereit Clan into a supply base for his army. Its strategic location was excellent, set on the banks of the Orchon River within a wide and fertile valley, it was perfectly suited for huge hordes of men and their horses. A gentle breath of mystique and melancholy blows over the surviving ruins of this former cosmopolitan city in which, as decreed by Law, multicultural tolerance predominated.

Ongi Monastery (Mongolian: Онгийн хийд, Ongiin Khiid) is the collective name for the ruins of two monasteries that face each other across the Ongi River in Saikhan-Ovoo district of Dundgovi Province, in south-central Mongolia. The Barlim Monastery is located on the north bank of the river while the Khutagt Monastery sits on the south bank. The older southern complex consisted of various administrative buildings as well as 11 temples. The northern complex, built in the 18th century, consisted of 17 temples - among them one of the largest temples in all of Mongolia. The grounds housed also 4 Buddhist universities. Founded in 1660, it was one of the largest monasteries in Mongolia and housed over 1000 monks at its height. The ruins are situated about 18 km south of the town of Saikhan Ovoo.

Both complexes of Ongi Monastery were completely destroyed in 1939 during anti-religious purges carried out under Khorloogiin Choibalsan, the leader of the Communist Party of Mongolia. Over 200 monks were killed, and many surviving monks were imprisoned or forcibly laicized and conscripted into the Communist controlled army.

A large number of ruins including a tall stupa can be seen on the river and on the surrounding hills. In the 1990s, it was decided to rebuild the monastery. The first temple was inaugurated in 2004. There is a small museum in a ger in front of it. One of the stupas has just been reconstructed as well. It has a commemorative plaque indicating the names of the monks who were killed in 1939.

After a strong rain the magnificent seasonal Orkhon Falls is one of the best sights in central Mongolia. About 250m downstream from the waterfall you can climb down to the bottom of the gorge; it’s 22m deep and dotted with pine trees.

Ask your tour operator about the status of the falls. The water doesn’t run all year and will only start to flow after the first good summer rain. Late July and August are the best times to see it, although it's still a very attractive spot in autumn. If you arrive when the waterfall is not in flow, take solace in the fact that the region is still gorgeous, and a fine area for swimming, camping and horse riding.

There are a few different ways to approach the waterfall; all of them involve rough travel in parts, on very rocky roads. Coming directly from Ulaanbaatar, most traffic will go on the road via Khujirt (around 35km from the falls). You'll pass a lovely viewpoint (GPS: N 46°53.465' E 102°22.762') on this track, as the river skirts a cliff face it helped carve into the steppe. One or two kilometres further along you'll pass a remarkable collection of large, Bronze-Age square graves (GPS: N 46°53.465' E 102°22.762') on your left. The road from Kharkhorin is longer, but by taking this route you can stop at Tövkhön Khiid on the way. From Arvaikheer, it’s possible to take a remote backcountry road via Züünbayan-Ulaan and Bat-Ölzii; but you’ll need an experienced driver and a very sturdy 4WD to attempt it.

Tuvkhunii Hyid (Mongolia) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Tuvkhunii Hyid in Mongolia.

Mongolia is one of the last unspoiled regions on Earth with endless pastureland, wild horsemen located amid a fascinating landscape along with huge herds of cattle and horses. In the north of Orkhon Valley is the Khangain Nuruu National Park, a romantic mountain landscape. Set on a remote mountain summit is the old and well known monastery of Tuvkhunii Hyid.In 1653 the remarkable religious and political dignity, Undur Gegeen Zanabazar, came to the monastery. He was a direct descendant of both Genghis Khan and Mongolia’s first religious leader, Bogd Javzundamba. The monastery that was built here has always been a place of tranquillity and prayer, a place in which wisdom comes from meditation. As in all Buddhist monasteries, daybreak is greeted ceremoniously and young monks blow into shells and turn towards all four points of the compass. In 2004, UNESCO designated this Mongolian sanctuary as a World Heritage Site, as part of the Orkhon Valley area of culture. In the remoteness of Mongolia’s splendid mountain world, all who come here are reminded of the sacred inner values of life.

It is because of the Cheng Hir Onsen that many tourists use this German camp. There is no such place in Mongolia where water is precious because you can enjoy the open-air bath with warm water. Water rises from there. I installed a pipe there and brought it to here, the temperature is 86 ℃. I use the water brought to this place to cool down to 36 ° C. Wondering, I followed the hot spring water pipe. Hot water was rising, but I was sorry that I did not have eggs. It is said that Cheng Here Hot Spring water, especially in the high coniferous volcanic area, has a lot of good sulfur content. I met the men who enjoyed the hot springs. Those who had just finished the bike trip seemed to resemble each other slightly. I am the first brother, and I am the second and the youngest. really good. We are traveling on a motorcycle and it is very dirty because it is very dusty and it is very nice to come in here and relax and soak your skin in warm water. Relieving Muscle Tensions Thanks to the hot spring that blows fatigue at once.

CAPITAL of the MONGOL EMPIRE | Kharakhorum, Mongolia

We spent a day in Kharakhorum - the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire.

Not much is left of the actual ancient capital. It looks like an empty field with a stone turtle. We stopped by Erdene Zuu Monastery and the Kharakhorum Museum. The best part was the exhibition ger beside the museum. We played some games, got our names written in Mongolian, and tried on traditional clothing.

This is day 11 on G Adventures Nomadic Mongolia tour.

Much love and happy travels
