Explore Stafford's Government Island

Visit the quarry where the U.S. Government's most famous buildings were born. Government Island, a historic 18th and 19th century quarry site provided Aquia sandstone for the construction of the U.S. Capitol and the White House and other historic buildings in Washington, D.C.

Today this 17-acre park is a historic scenic nature preserve and archaeological site. It has a boardwalk, ideal for observing aquatic and native plants, birds and other wildlife. Other amenities include a 1.5-mile trail (the first two trail segments are handicap accessible), and interpretive signs to help depict its rich, nationally significant history. Arial View of Aquia Harbour & Garrisonville Rd | Winter Storm Frida in Stafford, Virginia Jan 2022

The day after the snow storm I took out my drone to capture the beautiful disaster that left our neighborhood without power, for most, four days—some did not even get their power back for up to a week! I was without power four days and without cellular for three days. Fortunately we had a generator.

I realize this video does not in all actually capture in full extent the true aftermath of winter storm Frida. If you are a resident of Aquia Harbor, I'm sure you don't need my video to convince you of that! I was really just trying to see if the tree that fell on our roof caused any damage (fortunately it did not). However, throughout our neighborhood others weren't as fortunate. Many powerlines, fences and other structures were in the way of fallen trees, limbs and branches. The purpose of this video isn't so much to showcase that but to get a view of my environment following this devastating snowstorm. I hope you enjoy the views I captured.

👍 Give this video a thumbs up if it made you smile 😀

Winter Drone Flight over Briarpatch Park in Aquia Harbour | Stafford, Virginia | DJI Mavic Mini

Happy St. Patrick's Day! ☘️
I love living here. It was just a beautiful, sunny (yet windy) day and having not seen the sun in such a long time, I was inspired to pull out my drone and capture some footage.

If you think this footage is beautiful, wait until you see some of the shots I got over summer last year. (coming soon)

🚁 The drone I am flying is a DJI Mavic Mini

👍 Give this video a thumbs up if you dig it!

Government Island

Government Island is a Natural Park Preserve and Archaeological site in Stafford County Virginia that was once used to quarry Aquia Creek Sandstone used to build the White House and U.S.Capitol.

A Stafford History Minute: Government Island

A beautiful boardwalk and a scenic heritage trail invite visitors to explore Government Island. This 17-acre historic site is also referred to as America's Historic Stone Quarry. Stone (Aquia sandstone) used to build the U.S. Capitol and the White House was quarried here and shipped up the Potomac River. The nature trail along the water's edge has interpretative signs that detail the history of the Native American population of the island as well as the extensive activities on the site through the early nineteenth century. Creeks, wetlands, and marsh areas provide a variety of habitats for birds and other wildlife. The elevated boardwalk through the wetlands and woods to the island provide a continuous, accessible viewing area. Government Island is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.

Come Tour Stafford County, Virginia

I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor ( This video is about the really cool historical sites of Stafford County, Virginia. I talk about a couple of other sites in our county but I do show photos and a video of a couple others as well.

Some of the historical sites you could see in our area and within our county here in Stafford County, Virginia are:

1. The Aquia Episcopal Church which is a church here that is one of the oldest colonial churches in the United States of America. The church was first built in 1751 and burnt down in a fire in 1757 in which was rebuilt that very same year soon after the fire of 1757. The church is still being used to this day for Sunday church services but they do tours of the church but you have to call the church to make an appointment to tour this church.

2. Then we have Ferry Farm which is the childhood home for the first President of the United States of America, George Washington. Which is down in the Falmouth part of Stafford County in the southern part of the county.

3. Then we have the Aquia Quarry that is known as Government Island nearby the Aquia Creek. Which this place is where George Washington got the sandstone that built the White House and the U.S. Capital building in Washington, DC. Which basically is where the foundation of our nation's capital was brought from this spot directly to our nation's capital Washington, DC. So if you go to these two buildings in DC and wanted to see the place where the sandstone came from to build those buildings you would have to come here to Stafford County. All since it all came from here. And I made a video of Government Island and it was my first time over there. And now I've been living right around the corner from this place for 10 years and I finally got the courage to go there.

4. Then not far from here we have the battlefield sites for 5 Civil War battlefields close by as well. And a mansion that was built in colonial times that served as a headquarters and hospital for the Union army during the American Civil War during the Battle of Fredericksburg. Those 5 battlefields are from: the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, the Battles of Bull Run in Manassas, the Battle of the Wilderness, and the Battle of Chancellorsville.

5. We also have nearby in Triangle, Virginia right outside the main gate to the Quantico Marine Corps Base is the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Which outside of the museum is a monument park with bricks of names of people who has served in the United States Marine Corps. My father is one of those former MARINES who had served. His name was Captain Donald J St. Pierre his brick has his date of birth of 11/19/59 and his date of death of 07/05/03 on it. When you go to this museum you can remind yourself that man was my father when you see that brick at this museum.

6. We are also within the area of the historical Virginia city of Fredericksburg as well.

To learn more about our county you may visit our county's website at: Our county has been a county in Virginia since 1664 so we are a county that is now over 350 years old. We had just had our 350th anniversary of our founding back in 2014. I had put this video together because back when I was a student at the Washington, DC Job Corps Center. I told people I was from Stafford and they asked me. Where the heck is that place I've never heard of that place? And I have felt with the kind of history our county has I think this Virginia county should be the most famous Virginia county throughout the world. All since the foundation of our nation's capital came from here and we also have the childhood home of the very first president of our nation. The is where George Washington grew up. Plus that famous cherry tree story about Washington may have took place here back when Washington was a young boy. Since Washington grew up here from the ages of 3 to 19 at Ferry Farm.

Live Where You Love: Commuting From Fredericksburg To DC

Most of the Fredericksburg area's residents work outside the Fredericksburg area. Located just an hour north of Richmond and an hour south of Washington DC, Fredericksburg is a central point for many job seekers to call home. Boasting DC loan program lending amount limits, less expensive housing options, and a slower pace of life, Fredericksburg has become the last bedroom community of Washington DC. With several commuting options, many residents see the 1 -2 hour commute times during the week well worth it for the quality of life on the weekends.

Benny Vitali's Giant NYC Pizza! Fredericksburg Virginia

Shop VFC's Travels Merch Store! Ah yeah!

VFC's Pizza Tour continues to Fredericksburg Virginia, an unlikely spot - or so you would think - to find some NYC style pizza. But then again, so many places claim to be NYC Style pizza, but so few match up. Does Benny Vitali's pizza match up to the claim?

I'd spend a couple of days in Fredericksburg, actually quite a vibrant little city, and each time I walked by Benny Vitali's the place was packed and the line out the door. That's a pretty good indicator that the pizza might be good. Does it pass VFC's Pizza Test, tho? I'll go find out. After all, I comment on Twitter and Facebook so I am kind of an expert.

Watch the video for the good stuff, but I'll give you the spoiler that Benny's pizza is super-sized. It's the Godzilla of pizza. When I saw the pies in the oven, I though they were mini-UFOs. How is the small and thin VFC going to fit those slices into my tiny belly?

A challenge for sure, but in my search for the best pizza, let's check out this Benny Vitali's!

Ah yeah!
