MAP OF ASTANA [ KAZAKHSTAN ]
Astana, previously known as Akmolinsk, Tselinograd, Akmola, and most recently Nur-Sultan, is the capital city of Kazakhstan.
The city lies on the banks of the Ishim River in the north-central part of Kazakhstan, within the Akmola Region, though administered as a city with special status separately from the rest of the region. A 2020 official estimate reported a population of 1,136,008 within the city limits, making it the second-largest city in the country, after Almaty, which had been the capital until 1997. The city became the capital of Kazakhstan in 1997; since then it has grown and developed economically into one of the most modern cities in Central Asia. In 2021, the government selected Astana as one of the 10 priority destinations for tourist development.
Modern Astana is a planned city, following the process of other planned capitals. After it became the capital of Kazakhstan, the city dramatically changed its shape. The city's master-plan was designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. As the seat of the government of Kazakhstan, Astana is the site of the Parliament House, the Supreme Court, the Ak Orda Presidential Palace and numerous government departments and agencies. It is home to a range of futuristic buildings, including many skyscrapers. Astana is subdivided into four districts. Almaty District was created on 6 May 1998 by presidential decree. The district's territory encompasses an area of 21,054 hectares (52,030 acres; 81.29 square miles) with a population of 375,938 people. The district has five villages. Yesil District, which is also called left bank of the city, was created on 5 August 2008 by presidential decree. The district's territory encompasses an area of 31,179 ha (77,040 acres; 120.38 sq mi) with a population of 119,929 people. Saryarka District was created on 6 May 1998 by presidential decree. The district's territory encompasses an area of 19,202 ha (47,450 acres; 74.14 sq mi) with a population of 339,286 people. Baykonyr District was created on 16 March 2018 by presidential decree. The district's territory encompasses an area of 18,129 ha (44,800 acres; 70.00 sq mi) with a population of 233 351 people.
In April 1998, the Government of Kazakhstan asked architects and urban planners of international renown to participate in a design competition for the new capital. On 6 October 1998, Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa was awarded the First Prize. Kurokawa's proposal aimed to preserve and redevelop the existing city, and create a new city at the south and the east sides of the Ishim River, enabling the Symbiosis of the History and the Future.
North of the railway line, which crosses Astana in an east–west direction, are industrial and poorer residential areas. Between the railway line and the Ishim river is the city centre, where at present intense building activity is occurring. To the west and east are more elevated residential areas with parks and the new area of government administration to the south of the Ishim River. Here many large building projects are under way; for example, the construction of a diplomatic quarter, and government buildings. By 2030, these quarters are to be completed. Astana's chief planner, Vladimir Laptev, wants to build a Berlin in a Eurasian style. He has stated that a purely administrative capital such as Canberra is not one of his goals.

Otherworldly Landscape: Altyn-Emel National Park, Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is really blessed with natural beauty. Altyn-Emel National Park is located around 300 km from Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan. The landscape here is simply majestic. In the national park, you can find steppes, mountains, sand dunes and volcanic features. Fun fact: the Aktau chalk mountains are 100 million years old, and the area used to be under an ancient ocean named Tethys during the time of the dinosaurs.
Don't be fooled by its dryness: it does rain here, and it's teeming with life. You can encounter lizards, bugs, birds and gazelles. There are tons of wild mosquitos too. They are very ferocious; unlike mosquitos in the city that try to sneak to get a bite, these wild mosquitos literally swarm you in no time. Their bite also really stings, it feels like being stung by a needle. Our visit to the singing dunes (where apparently you can hear the desert singing on the top) was cut short because of hordes of mosquitos. Regardless, Altyn-Emel should be put into the list of places to see before you die, as it has an otherworldly landscape.

The ruins of Sauran, Kazakhstan, 23 September 2023 I Once the largest city in Kazakhstan!
Sauran in southern Kazakhstan may be in ruins today, but this was once the largest city in Kazakhstan and a major stop on the Silk Road.
Watch my other Kazakhstan videos:
Located in what is now South Kazakhstan, Sauran may have been originally settled as early as the seventh century. By the 10th century it was a flourishing metropolis, described by the medieval geographer Al-Maqdisi as a “large city surrounded by seven walls.” Archeologists were puzzled when they failed to find the seven walls in these ruins, until they found another nearby site and realized that the city moved sometime in the 12th or 13th century.
No one knows why the city was moved. Some believe that the original city was abandoned because of the presence of bubonic plague, likely brought from traders traveling the Silk Road. Others believe it was abandoned due to water shortage or after it was conquered by Genghis Khan. However, it served as the capital for the Mongol White Horde through the time of Timur Lenk (1336-1405), but it seems that as the empire declined, so did the fortunes of Sauran.
By the 14th century, Sauran was undergoing a resurgence, and the poet Wāṣefi described it in the 16th century as “cheerful and bright, with soft invigorating air” and containing “all sorts of beautiful trees.” Sauran remained a key city in Central Asia until the 18th century, when the nearby city of Turkistan began to dominate the region.
The secret to Sauran’s centuries of prosperity in the desert is its extensive arrangement of underground irrigation canals. Known as a kyariz system, it used horizontal tunnels to take advantage of the natural flow from mountain aquifers and the confluence of three small rivers: Tastaksay, Aksay and Maydantal.
The city was recognizable for its two towering minarets with unique construction. Made from brick with internal spiral staircases, they were made to sway, or at least appear to sway. Early written accounts suggest they were designed to amaze visitors and enhance the reputation of the city as a center of the Islamic world. Sadly, the towers collapsed in the late 19th century.
The ruins of Sauran should not be confused with the Village of Sauran, founf closeby. The ruins can be easily reached from the city of Türkistan by driving northwest along the Türkistan–Kyzylorda highway for about 48 km.
During my visit in September 2023, no entrance fees or such were paid, and I had basically the entire site for myself!

Honda Transalp 600: Kazakistan e Kyrgyzstan
2016: Tour delle Vie delle Seta - SETTIMANA 5 e 6 (Kazakistan e Kyrgyzstan)
12.000 km attraverso #kazakistan e #Kyrgyzstan.
Cadere a 80 km/h a causa di una disattenzione fa abbastanza male;
