10. Cacao
On the Comté River south of the capital, Cacao is a popular day trip from Cayenne. Hmong refugees transplanted from Laos in the 1970s are the main ethnic group in this small Asian village of wooden stilt houses. Sunday is the best day to visit, when the popular market features Hmong embroidery and weaving, as well as local noodle soups.
9. Musée Départemental De Franconie, Cayenne
Near the Place de Palmistes, Cayenne's liveliest plaza, the Musée Départemental De Franconie offers an overview of the country's history, as well as its flora and fauna. The museum tucks into a simple wooden Creole house built in the 19th century by the Franconie family.
8. Camp de la Transportation
In the border town of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, at the chilling Camp de la Transportation, prisoners arrived for processing and transfer to penal colonies throughout the territory. After walking through the same gates as former inmates, Alfred Dreyfus and Papillon, you can see rusty shackles and solitary confinement cells with tiny windows.
7. Pirogue River Trip
Paddling along a jungle-fringed river in a local boat is an exhilarating way to explore French Guiana's seemingly impenetrable wilderness. The rivers flow through the heart of the steamy jungle and are the best way to travel between remote villages and see wildlife in its natural habitat, including capybara, caiman, and monkeys. Typically, guides offer cruises in pirogues, dugout canoes carved from local wood.
6. Remire-Montjoly Beach
If you're seeking a beach fix, you'll find Cayenne's best stretch of sand and sea at Remire-Montjoly. The beaches in French Guiana are typically wild, windswept affairs, and this beach is no different, but it does have a narrow, strip of golden shoreline that is great for sunbathing, and palms and lush greenery fringe the sand, providing welcome patches of shade.
5. Zoo de Guyane
Jaguars, sloths, agoutis, crocodiles, howler monkeys, anteaters, and a panoply of birds, such as toucans and macaws are just some of the residents at Zoo de Guyane. The focus is on animals native to French Guiana, so this is a great place to get acquainted with the country's wildlife before you venture into the wilderness.
4. Tresor Nature Reserve, Kaw
A 1.5- to 2-hour drive from Cayenne, the wildlife-rich marshes of Kaw cover thousands of square kilometers. The Tresór Nature Reserve encompasses a huge area of the Kaw ecosystem and is a great place to observe black caimans, a smaller relative of the American alligator, as well as a rich diversity of bird life such as the scarlet ibis.
3. Guiana Space Centre
Apparently, rockets and rainforests are a good mix in French Guiana. In 1964, the French government chose this jungle-fringed slice of equatorial coast near Kourou for a space center, thanks to its low population density and distance from storm tracks and earthquake zones.
2. Hattes Beach
In the northwest corner of French Guiana, Plage les Hattes at Awala-Yalimapo is the most important single nesting site in the world for giant leatherback turtles. During the peak season from April to July, more than 80 leatherbacks lumber up the beach in a single night.
1. Îles du Salut (Salvation Islands)
In 1931, Frenchman Henri Charrière was convicted of a murder he did not commit. He was sentenced to life imprisonment at the penal colony on Devil's Island, one of the infamous Îles du Salut, where shark-infested waters lash the rocky shores. After surviving 12 years of horrific conditions, he escaped to Venezuela. The book and movie, Papillon, recount his ordeal.

Guyana, a country on South America’s North Atlantic coast, is defined by its dense rainforest. English-speaking, with cricket and calypso music, it's culturally connected to the Caribbean region. Its capital, Georgetown, is known for British colonial architecture, including tall, painted-timber St. George’s Anglican Cathedral. A large clock marks the facade of Stabroek Market, a source of local produce.

Above Guyana - National Park
What was once the 'Demerara Golf Club', later changed to ' Queen Elizabeth II National Park', and then finally to the 'National Park', this urban space has remained a public space popular for Guyanese to hang out, exercise, and relax. Many pieces of art and monuments can be found scattered across the entirety of the park as well, making the scenery more enjoyable.

The Hidden Paradise! De Amerindian Settlement at Capoey Lake.
Take a relaxing cool speed boad drive with me, across the black water Lake to Annie's Island, where she shared her secret of living a long and peaceful life, for over 80 years, as she pick up mangoes with me, before heading over to the Capoey Mission.
The Capoey Lake is one of the most exquisite lakes in Guyana and it's one of the three largest lakes on the Essequibo Coast. The lake is known for its large beige beaches and black water.
The Amerindian village is located near Anna Regina in Region Two, Pomeroon - Supenaam.
The refreshing water, very scenic nature, and the pure oasis of serenity...
The Amerindian settlement is accessible by road and boat. You can travel along a two-mile long road, like I showed you, along the rice fields and jamoon trees. Which branches off from the Essequibo Public Road close to the village of Taymouth Manor, followed by boat across the Capoey Lake.
Capoey is said to be an Arawak word which means ‘Land of the rise of the moon’. According to the story, centuries ago, when the Europeans arrived they had enslaved the Amerindians. An a group of Arawaks, made their escape at the rise of the moon by travelling across the lake into the jungle.
And Capoey was founded, when some of the families of Amerindian descent, mainly from the Arawak tribe, settled there.
Today, there are more than 523 residents, and most are involved in farming and the timber trade. There is a nursery school and primary school, village office, library, an event hall, as well as a number of benabs (palm thatched hut) and a playground, all centrally located at the front of the village close to the lakeside.

Some highlights from our recent trip to Lake Mainstay Resort. Mainstay Lake is a lake in the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region of Guyana, near the Atlantic coast, northwest of the mouth of the Essequibo River, 12 mi (19 km) north of Adventure.
