Exploring Japan's Lost Heritage on Sakhalin - Russia's Largest Island
Welcome to a fascinating journey to Sakhalin, the largest island in Russia, once known as Karafuto ( 樺太庁) during its Japanese colonial era. Join me as I delve into the captivating tapestry of this island's unique heritage, intertwining Japanese and Russian influences that have shaped its history, culture, and landscapes.
My exploration begins with a thrilling excursion into the remnants of the island's rich industrial past. I'll take you along the abandoned railway lines that were once the lifelines of Sakhalin's economic growth, transporting coal, timber, and dreams of prosperity across vast terrains.
Step back in time as we wander through the echoes of Sakhalin's history. Ruins of ancient Japanese temples and sanctuaries stand testament to the island's rich cultural heritage. We'll delve into the tales of the past, learning how the blend of traditions has shaped Sakhalin's identity.
As we journey deeper, we'll unveil the abandoned industrial facilities that once thrived on this rugged land.
Sakhalin's allure goes beyond its historical and industrial aspects. We'll immerse ourselves in its breathtaking natural beauty – from deep bushes and incredible waterfalls to vast bays and rugged coastlines.
My expedition to explore Sakhalin's Japanese heritage promises to be an unforgettable experience, unraveling the captivating tales of two cultures intertwining on this vast canvas. Abandoned Places # 42
Aniva Island and its stately lighthouse were involved in a custody battle between Japan and Russia for around a century. The island flip-flopped many times between Russian ownership, Japanese ownership, and even a shared ownership. The Soviets finally took full control after WWII and added radioactivity to the lighthouse. Nuclear generators and mercury lubricants helped the structure operate partially by itself, but it faded due to abandonment after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Boat trip to Aniva lighthouse (no words cool)
Aniva Lighthouse (from 1939 to 1946 - Cape Nakashiretoko Lighthouse (Jap. 中知 床 岬 灯台 Nakashiretoko-misaki-to: dai)) is an abandoned lighthouse on Cape Aniva, Sakhalin Island, on the Sivuchya cliff. The height of the tower is 31 meters, the height of the light is 40 meters above sea level [1].
Aniva Lighthouse
One of the most beautiful and hard-to-reach abandoned lighthouses in the world is located in the southern part of the Sakhalin Island.
The lighthouse on Cape Aniva was built in the 1930s by Japanese engineers. One of its main features is that it had a small nuclear reactor inside, which was able to provide autonomous energy for more than 30 years.
The last lighthouse keeper left it in 2010, and it was abandoned completely. The lighthouse almost has not been maintained since its construction, and due to strong sea winds and frequent storms, the structure was severely damaged. Most likely, in the next 10 years it will collapse, the remains will be absorbed by the sea and only these photos will remain from it.
To get to the lighthouse you need to board a plane to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (this is somewhere near Japan, yes), from there it is 160 km by broken roads to the village of Novikovo (population 500 people), then 50 km on foot to the west (this will take 12 hours). Bears and foxes can be encountered on the way, they should be avoided. It will also be necessary to take climbing equipment with you to descend from a height of 238 meters, then another 10 km over the rocks and you are almost there! However, between you and the lighthouse there is a small strait of 15 meters, which needs to be crossed, which is complicated due to the fact that a strong current can take you to the open sea. After all these trials, you are on the spot!
Although there is a simpler option: you can just rent a helicopter or a yacht in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and get to the lighthouse in just a few hours...

Sakhalin - Incredibly beautiful island
#Sakhalin is the next point of my Far Eastern trip. A place where, probably, everyone can feel like a pioneer. It's the very end of the world.
An island, on every square meter of which there is something beautiful, bewitching, almost untouched by man. Mountains, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan, bays, grottoes, waterfalls…
This time I discovered the best natural and man-made sights of Sakhalin: Aniva lighthouse, Cape Velikan and Cape Bird, a sea lion rookery in Nevelsk, Mount Kruzenshtern.
But you can explore Sakhalin endlessly, each time learning something new about it. So let's do it together!

Beautiful Drone Footage of Sakhalin Lighthouse In Russia, Built By Japan 1939

Fantastic footage of the Russian Sakhalin Lighthouse. The lighthouse was built by Japan in 1939.
Sakhalin is the largest Island in the Russian Federation. The island is located in the North Pacific Ocean, sitting just off the Russian Pacific coast and to the North of the Japanese Island of Hokkaido. The island was under Japanese control until 1875 when they ceded it to Russia in return for the southern Kuril Islands.
The Russo-Japanese War had the Sakhalin Island divided, the south island was Japanese and the north Russian. During the war Russia gained control of the whole island and the sothern Kruil Islands. Today Japan seeks no claim to Sakhalin but does still claim the southern Kuril Islands.
Currently the island is the home to around 500,000 people.
lighthouse. Have you ever visited any lighthouse ? #nature #lighthouse #amazing #naturestatus #short
To visit the Aniva lighthouse all alone is a great success. Although it is quite difficult to access, it is a favorite place for tourists from all over the country. We were lucky - the forecast stubbornly showed a storm, but late at night it changed to a favorable one, and all commercial groups had already canceled trips.
It is a pity that the lighthouse in such harsh conditions is very quickly destroyed, and very soon there may be no trace of the visiting card of Sakhalin ...
