Most beautiful places in Chile 🇨🇱 #travel #explore #nature #adventure #traveling #chile

Catedral de Marmol: The so-called marble cathedral and marble caves was the most memorable area we saw in Chile. We were in Chile the whole 2019 and visited every one of their regions. We went to the Atacama Desert and the town of San Pedro de Atacama. We went to the Torres del Paine area. But the General Carrera Lake was the highlight of the year. We went to Puerto Rio Tranquillo and took a full day boat ride that took us to the marble cabinets area and then to the marble chapel, marble caves and to the marble cathedral.

Salt lagoons: These crystal-clear lagoons are hidden an hour away from San Pedro de Atacama and offer one of the most breathtaking views of Chile. Here you’ll find seven lagoons surrounded by snow-white soil that is actually salt. The high levels of salt in the water allow you to float in them- similar to what happens in the dead sea. Visiting these lagoons is a must if you want to enjoy a breathtaking view and live a unique experience in the desert. Please take note that you can only bathe in two out of the seven lagoons and that it is not recommendable to swim for more than 20 minutes, because of the high levels of salt.

Patagonia: Torres del Paine National Park is the most famous national park in Patagonia. Located in Chile near the town of Puerto Natales, the Torres del Paine NP is home to stunning hiking trails and breathtaking viewpoints. Within the national park, there are many different day hikes including the most famous Las Torres Viewpoint, but also two very famous multi-day hikes. The longer of the two is the “O-Circuit”. This 7 to 9-day hike circles the park and visits all of the highlights.

Hidden Gems of Chile: Top Destinations Worth Exploring

Chile, a land of breathtaking diversity, boasts some of South America's most stunning and lesser-known destinations. While iconic spots like Santiago, Valparaíso, and the Atacama Desert draw crowds year-round, Chile's hidden treasures offer a unique blend of natural wonders, cultural richness, and untamed beauty waiting to be discovered.

Tucked away in remote corners of this elongated country, these hidden gems promise unforgettable experiences for intrepid travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path adventures. From pristine national parks and secluded beaches to charming colonial towns and vibrant indigenous communities, Chile's hidden gems offer a glimpse into the country's soul beyond the tourist hotspots.

### Chiloe Island: A Mythical Archipelago

Nestled off Chile's southern coast, Chiloé Island beckons with its mystical allure and timeless charm. Steeped in folklore and tradition, this archipelago boasts rolling hills, lush forests, and colorful palafitos (stilt houses) lining its shores. Visitors can explore quaint fishing villages like Castro and Ancud, where wooden churches built by Jesuit missionaries stand as UNESCO World Heritage sites, testament to Chiloé's cultural heritage.

Nature enthusiasts will delight in Chiloé's pristine landscapes, from the mist-shrouded forests of Chiloé National Park to the rugged coastline of Cucao and the tranquil waters of Chacao Channel. Birdwatchers can spot rare species like the Magellanic penguin and the pink-footed shearwater, while hikers can trek along scenic trails, immersing themselves in the island's wild beauty.

### Valle de Elqui: Stargazer's Paradise

Nestled in Chile's northern region, the Valle de Elqui captivates visitors with its celestial wonders and serene landscapes. Renowned as one of the world's premier stargazing destinations, this remote valley boasts clear skies, minimal light pollution, and a palpable sense of tranquility. At night, the Milky Way unfurls its dazzling tapestry overhead, offering an awe-inspiring spectacle for astronomy enthusiasts and dreamers alike.

During the day, visitors can explore quaint villages like Pisco Elqui and Montegrande, where the spirit of Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral permeates the air. Wander through vineyards producing Chile's famed pisco brandy, sample local delicacies, or embark on horseback rides through the valley's picturesque terrain. Whether contemplating the cosmos or savoring the simple pleasures of rural life, Valle de Elqui enchants visitors with its timeless allure.

### Carretera Austral: A Road Less Traveled

For those craving adventure and untamed landscapes, the Carretera Austral beckons with its rugged beauty and remote wilderness. Stretching over 1,200 kilometers through Chile's southern regions, this iconic highway offers a journey through some of the country's most pristine and inaccessible terrain.

Travelers can marvel at towering glaciers, turquoise rivers, and ancient forests as they wind their way along the Carretera Austral. Chile - Chiloé - Three Towns

As part of our visit to the island of Chiloé we visit three towns: Dalcahue, Ancud and Chepu. Chiloë is known for its distinctive folklore, mythology, potatoes, cuisine and unique architecture without much contact from the rest of Chile or the Western World. We see churches, fishermen and farmers at work as well as rural markets.

We visited Chile on our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa and South America; see our channel for hundreds of clips.

Chiloe Island, Chile, Pure Travel Magic

The misty, verdant archipelago of Chiloé evolved independently from the rest of the Chile and escaped much of the conforming influence of Santiago and the colonial onslaught. It then remained isolated and off the commercial route until nearby Puerto Montt was founded in the mid-19th century. Chiloé sprouted its own history and culture, unique to the islands, and is worthy of a visit for its striking regional flavor.

Chiloé Island: A Tapestry of Wood and Water
Off the rugged southern coast of Chile, Chiloé Island lies cradled by the cold waters of the Pacific. This island, with its rolling hills, dense forests, and rich folklore, offers a glimpse into a way of life deeply connected to both the sea and the spiritual.

Chiloé’s narrative is woven through its iconic wooden churches. Constructed over the centuries by the island's skilled carpenters and shipbuilders, these churches are masterpieces of a unique architectural tradition combining European Jesuit styles with indigenous woodworking techniques. The churches are not only places of worship but also symbols of the community's resilience and ingenuity. Each church, with its wooden shingles and intricate interiors, tells a story of faith adapted to the island’s remote and challenging environment.

As you explore more of Chiloé, the island's cultural richness unfolds in its myths and legends. The local folklore is populated with mythical creatures like the Trauco, a forest spirit, and the Caleuche, a ghost ship that sails the seas around the island. These tales, passed down through generations, are not mere superstitions but a vibrant part of the island’s cultural identity, reflecting the deep connection between the Chilotes and their mysterious, often mist-shrouded landscape.

Life on Chiloé is also marked by a profound connection to the sea. The island's cuisine features a bounty from the ocean, with dishes like curanto, a traditional meal where seafood, meat, and potatoes are cooked together in a pit dug in the ground, covered with leaves. This method, which dates back centuries, is a communal activity, bringing together families and neighbors in a celebration of harvest and camaraderie.

The island's natural landscapes invite exploration. From the lush Valdivian temperate rainforests to the extensive wetlands, Chiloé offers a haven for a diverse range of wildlife, including numerous bird species that make the island a birdwatcher's paradise. The Chiloé National Park, in particular, is a place where the island's natural heritage is fiercely protected. Here, the raw beauty of Chiloé can be experienced through trails that wind through dense forests and along rugged coastlines.

Evenings on Chiloé bring a quiet magic as the fog rolls in from the sea, enveloping the landscape in a soft, ethereal blanket. In the small fishing villages that dot the coastline, the lights from homes flicker warmly, inviting one to listen to stories told by the fireside, of ships and sea monsters, of saints and spirits.

Chiloé Island, with its blend of mystical folklore, unique architectural heritage, and vibrant community life, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its people. It is a place where the past is preserved not as a relic but as a living, breathing part of everyday life. For those who visit, Chiloé offers not just a retreat but a profound immersion into a world where every element tells a story of connection to land, sea, and sky.
