Canada Road Trip: The Best Things To Do In Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia tourism is hard to beat. From all the things to do in Halifax to incredible Canada road trips in Cape Breton, There are so many things to do in Nova Scotia.

Welcome to Nova Scotia!

From May 27th to June 6th, 2017, we toured Nova Scotia as part of the Road to 150 campaign. It was our second province during our 150-day road trip and what an incredible time we had. From the absolute natural beauty of Cape Breton Highlands National Park to the historic beauty of Halifax, the small-town charm of Lunenburg, and the excitement of tidal bore rafting, Nova Scotia is an incredible province to explore. Although we accomplished a lot in ten days, we really only scratched the surface of this incredible east coast province. Whether you're looking for that laid back East Coast charm, maritime history, or incredible natural wonders, Nova Scotia is the place to visit!

Canada's Road to 150 was a 150-day Canada-wide multimedia road trip celebrating Canada's 150th birthday by exploring the uniqueness of this country provincially and collectively while answering the question; What makes Canada special?

We drove to and through every driveable province and territory, showcasing Canada's natural beauty and regional attractions while interviewing Canadians of all cultures and backgrounds, including local celebrities, immigrants, refugees, and everyday rural and urban Canadians. Our aim was to dig deep into what makes Canada such an incredibly inspiring country while showing off the best of Canada's tourism to Canadians and to the world.

Exploring Beautiful Downtown Amherst, Nova Scotia | Pointless Wandering

Stuart and Missy's Nova Scotia Adventure: Discovering the Red Stone Beauty of Amherst

Join Stuart and Missy as they continue their exciting exploration of Nova Scotia! This episode takes them on a charming day trip to the historic town of Amherst. Known for its red stone buildings and rich history, Amherst sits majestically at the northeast end of the Cumberland Basin, an arm of the Bay of Fundy, and offers a vibrant blend of past and present.

Amherst is nestled on a height of land at the eastern boundary of the Isthmus of Chignecto and Tantramar Marshes, a mere 3km (1.9 mi) east of the border with New Brunswick. The location also offers proximity to major landmarks, 65 km (40 mi) southeast of Moncton and 60 km (37 mi) southwest of the New Brunswick abutment of the Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island at Cape Jourimain.

This scenic town was first settled in 1764 by Yorkshire immigrants after the Acadian expulsion. The original settlement was situated 3 kilometers (1.9 mi) southwest of the present town, right by the shores of the beautiful Bay of Fundy. The population was later bolstered by United Empire Loyalists seeking refuge from the American Revolution. A mill built on the current townsite led to residents moving closer to their work, shaping the town we see today.

In the 19th century, Amherst blossomed into a significant regional hub, noted for its shipbuilding and essential services to neighbouring communities. It's also known for its remarkable contribution to Canadian history, home to four Fathers of Confederation: Edward B. Chandler, Robert B. Dickey, Jonathan McCully, and Sir Charles Tupper.

Watch as Stuart and Missy delve into this captivating history, stroll through the town's charming streets, and marvel at the unique red stone architecture that gives Amherst its distinct character. Whether you're a history buff, architecture enthusiast, or love to travel and explore, this adventure in Amherst, Nova Scotia, is one you won't want to miss!
