Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 10: Pounding the Pavement to Altopascio
Lucca to Altopascio (1 day; 22.0 km)
Today, we take concrete steps towards reaching Rome…pounding the pavement through urban space. Linking this metropolitan milage is, of course, the Via Francigena and a series of churches of different eras and styles. Tomorrow…a “zero day” back in Lucca.

September 10, 2019 - Vía Francigena Day 1: Lucca to Altopascio. It was a sunny day but the the walk was through city tracks besides paved road. There was rural track for a short time after Porcari.

Day 2 of the Via Francigena from Altopascio to San Miniato 18.5 miles (29.5 km)
Altopascio to San Miniato Alto Stage 2
Via Francigena, Tuscany, Italy
Today is a relatively long day of 18 miles with 537m of ascent, much of it towards the end of the day. To shorten the day maybe a bus could be taken from Ponte a Cappiano to San Miniato. The walks highlights are: - following an ancient cobbled path through beautiful woods, the amazing bridge at Ponte a Cappiano, following the canal through countryside with far-reaching views, and finally seeing San Miniato at the top of a hill.
We left our room at Dimora Sotto La Rocca at 7.45am, leaving Altopascio, then walking alongside a busy main road. We stopped at the amazing large, modern, La Citadella café, which is situated by a large roundabout. There is an incredible assortment of cakes, sandwiches etc, English was spoken too. Leaving at 8.30am, we walked alongside a quieter road (right at the roundabout), then left through glorious countryside. Following the path, we followed the ancient cobbled path, with a bridge over a stream, before leaving the woodlands to emerge into Galleno. To the right is a general store, we called in, bought some fruit, and collected a stamp from the very friendly staff (5 miles, 2 hours 20 mins, 91m ascent). Leaving at 10am, we walked through further pretty woods, and had far-reaching views.
Arriving at Ponte a Cappiano we crossed the bridge and ate lunch at café Arci Le Calle (9.4 miles, 4.5 hours, 190m ascent). The bridge spanning the Usciana Canal is beautiful with 4 arches, it used to have a system of locks, various mills, and forges, and dates from the 16th century. Part of the buildings of the bridge have been converted into a Pilgrim Hostel-which would have been a fascinating place to stay. Partway across the bridge, the path descends, then follows the dyke wall of the canal. After one mile, just when you think you are heading in the wrong direction, there is a path to the right. We then followed a bridge over another canal, passing through re-claimed marshes.
To avoid stretches of road walking, the path takes a circuitous journey, but at least it is flat. After crossing the SP11 road, there are 72 steps, leading into the pretty town of Fucecchio, (2pm, 12.5 miles, 246m) with lovely churches and views. Later we crossed over the River Arno- which flows 241km from the Apennines, through Florence to the Tyrrhenian Sea near Pisa.
We stopped in Bason Café in San Miniato Basso (4pm,17 miles, 270m ascent). Just after we left the café it began to pour with rain, but it was too late to stop to take shelter. A new zig-zag path has been built up the steep slope to San Miniato Alto. At the top of the path is a lift that could be taken to reach the town walls, but we took the stairs instead. There is a nice viewing area at the top, with fabulous views out over the countryside.
We went for a delicious dinner at a very friendly restaurant of Le Due Torri, calling into the small shop opposite to buy some food for the next day.

Old pilgrim ways don’t exist anymore? | Day 4 of Via Francigena from Altopascio to Fucecchio
It was the 4th day of Via Francigena trail when we hiked around 17 kms from the town Altopascio to Fucecchio.
We spend the night wild camping in the little forest in the fields of Tuscany that turned out to be quite a calm place. We started the day at 9am and the sun was already up on the sky and quite hot. The rain the day before helped to cool down the temperature and the ground a bit so we were enjoying the fresh wind all day long. We were unhappy to know that the first few kilometers of official Via Francigena trail were going on the fast car road. We already learnt with the Camino that nowadays most of the long trails are like this. They are inevitably crossing the car roads and there are just parts of it that go on some old quiet forest paths away from the traffic. Then the trail turned away from traffic and we appeared to be on the quiet and green forest path, which nowadays you see mostly in some fantasy movies and cartoons only. We even have spotted a baby hare that wasn't really afraid of us and was pasturing quietly eating the grass in front of us. We met some half-ruined old bridge and many old rocks that were serving as signs of the road number and direction back in time…

We are a couple who once fell in love with mountains and couldn't get back. So we decided to follow our heart and move from a big city to a small village to be able to do what we love and to create this content. Our goal is to promote the healthy lifestyle, to motivate people to travel more and care for nature around. We are passionate walkers who love hiking, trekking and camping. We offer the detailed information of our hikes and routes, including the map and all the directions, so that you can repeat it if you'd like to.
We choose walking over driving and other types of transportation whenever we can because we learnt that this way we see so much more and can explore and feel the place better. Walking is an excellent activity that has so many benefits to your health and requires no special equipment or practice, so we encourage you to get the most out of it and get out walking.
We speak English, Spanish, French and Russian, so don't hesitate to address to us in your native language.

Lucca is a city and commune in Tuscany - Lucca Italy - ECTV
Donations are welcome. I am putting every dime to getting to Antarctica and show you whats there. Here is the link to Donate. =) Thanks.
Lucca (/ˈluːkə/ LOO-kə, Italian: [ˈlukka] (About this soundlisten)) is a city and comune in Tuscany, Central Italy, on the Serchio River, in a fertile plain near the Ligurian Sea. It is the capital of the Province of Lucca. It is famous for its intact Renaissance-era city walls.
Ancient and medieval city
Lucca was founded by the Etruscans (there are traces of an earlier Ligurian settlement in the 3rd century BC called Luk meaning marsh in which the name Lucca originated) and became a Roman colony in 180 BC.[6] The rectangular grid of its historical centre preserves the Roman street plan, and the Piazza San Michele occupies the site of the ancient forum. Traces of the amphitheatre may still be seen in the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro.
At the Lucca Conference, in 56 BC, Julius Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus reaffirmed their political alliance known as the First Triumvirate.
Piazza dell'Anfiteatro and the Basilica of San Frediano
Frediano, an Irish monk, was bishop of Lucca in the early sixth century.[8] At one point, Lucca was plundered by Odoacer, the first Germanic King of Italy. Lucca was an important city and fortress even in the sixth century, when Narses besieged it for several months in 553. Under the Lombards, it was the seat of a duke who minted his own coins. The Holy Face of Lucca (or Volto Santo), a major relic supposedly carved by Nicodemus, arrived in 742. During the eighth-tenth centuries Lucca was a center of Jewish life, the community being led by the Kalonymos family (which at some point during this time migrated to Germany to become a major component of proto-Ashkenazic Jewry). Lucca became prosperous through the silk trade that began in the eleventh century, and came to rival the silks of Byzantium. During the tenth–eleventh centuries Lucca was the capital of the feudal margraviate of Tuscany, more or less independent but owing nominal allegiance to the Holy Roman Emperor.
After the death of Matilda of Tuscany, the city began to constitute itself an independent commune with a charter in 1160. For almost 500 years, Lucca remained an independent republic. There were many minor provinces in the region between southern Liguria and northern Tuscany dominated by the Malaspina; Tuscany in this time was a part of feudal Europe. Dante’s Divine Comedy includes many references to the great feudal families who had huge jurisdictions with administrative and judicial rights. Dante spent some of his exile in Lucca.
In 1273 and again in 1277, Lucca was ruled by a Guelph capitano del popolo (captain of the people) named Luchetto Gattilusio. In 1314, internal discord allowed Uguccione della Faggiuola of Pisa to make himself lord of Lucca. The Lucchesi expelled him two years later, and handed over the city to another condottiero, Castruccio Castracani, under whose rule it became a leading state in central Italy. Lucca rivalled Florence until Castracani's death in 1328. On 22 and 23 September 1325, in the battle of Altopascio, Castracani defeated Florence's Guelphs. For this he was nominated by Louis IV the Bavarian to become duke of Lucca. Castracani's tomb is in the church of San Francesco. His biography is Machiavelli's third famous book on political rule.
Occupied by the troops of Louis of Bavaria, the city was sold to a rich Genoese, Gherardino Spinola, then seized by John, king of Bohemia. Pawned to the Rossi of Parma, by them it was ceded to Mastino II della Scala of Verona, sold to the Florentines, surrendered to the Pisans, and then nominally liberated by the emperor Charles IV and governed by his vicar.
Lucca managed, at first as a democracy, and after 1628 as an oligarchy, to maintain its independence alongside of Venice and Genoa, and painted the word Libertas on its banner until the French Revolution in 1789.
Between 1799 and 1800 it was contended by the French and Austrian armies. Finally the French prevailed and granted a democratic constitution in the 1801. Howeverer, already in 1805 the Republic of Lucca was converted into a monarchy by Napoleon, who installed his sister Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi as Princess of Lucca.
From 1815 to 1847 it was a Bourbon-Parma duchy. The only reigning dukes of Lucca were Maria Luisa of Spain, who was succeeded by her son Charles II, Duke of Parma in 1824. Meanwhile, the Duchy of Parma had been assigned for life to Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma, the second wife of Napoleon. In accordance with the Treaty of Vienna (1815), upon the death of Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma in 1847, Parma reverted to Charles II, Duke of Parma, while Lucca lost independence and was annexed to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. As part of Tuscany, it became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1860 and finally part of the Italian State in 1861.

Lucca is one of Tuscany's most beloved artistic cities, an unskippable part of any tour of the region. Nicknamed the town of a hundred churches on account of its incredible number of places of worship, it is unique among city-states for having maintained its independence up until 1847.
Historical circumstances demanded that Lucca fortify itself, and so its immense artistic and architectural heritage is ringed by a massive circuit of defensive walls.
Lucca sits in the centre of the Lucca plain, a breathtaking landscape that was sculpted by the river Serchio and is dotted with medieval towns.
What to see in Lucca
The first thing that the visitor claps eyes on is the magnificent and intact circuit of walls, built in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They run for more than 4 kilometres and are strengthened by no fewer than 10 bastions; you can walk along the top of them too. They are still the best vantage point over the city.
Lucca was built to a medieval plan, and much of its architecture bears witness to the various historical ages that it has lived through. The most notable of these is the Roman amphitheatre - converted into piazza dell'Anfiteatro by architect Lorenzo Nottolini.
One of the city's other jewels is without a doubt its cathedral, the Duomo di San Martino, whose Romanesque façade is strikingly off-kilter: one of the arches in its portico is smaller than the others, cramped for room by the pre-existing bell tower. Next to the bell tower there is a column on which you find a sculpture of a labyrinth, a symbol of pilgrimage that pops up in other churches along the Via Francigena.
The cathedral is home to the sculpture of the Volto Santo (Holy Countenance) and the beautiful tomb of Ilaria del Carretto, sculpted by Jacopo della Quercia.
As you walk through the city streets, you will also come across the façade of the basilica of San Frediano, and then the piazza and sumptuous church of San Michele. The capitals on the façade of this latter church are sculpted into portraits of Italian heroes, including Garibaldi.
And on a walk through Lucca, the discoveries do not end there. On top of the Guinigi tower - which is open to the public - you will find a little garden, full of trees, and an astonishing panorama over the whole Lucca plain.
Don't miss the long, narrow Via Fillungo, which contains all the city's chicest outlets; also make sure you see the rooms of the Palazzo Ducale in Piazza Napoleone. Outside the walls, you will find a beautiful district of Liberty-style villas, just next to the inhabited centre.
Nearby
Around Lucca, there are numerous little towns you can visit for their hilltop views and unchanged traditions. You can discover the most gorgeous villas and gardens of the Lucchesia; equally, you could have at look at the fortress of Montecarlo. Lucca sits upon the Via Francigena, between stage 27 (Camaiore to Lucca) and 28 (Lucca to Altopascio). This means that you are likely to see a few pilgrims.
Events
With its old medieval centre, Lucca lends itself well to the fantastical, and indeed in October the streets play host to Lucca Comics & Games, the most important comics, animé and roleplay game festival in Italy. It makes for a colourful, secular carnival, thronging with cosplayers from all over the world.
Lucca has become a shrine for music lovers in recent years, thanks to the Lucca Summer Festival, which gets some of the most famous international artists in the world.
Typical Produce
The Lucchese cuisine is one of Tuscany's tastiest. The stuffed pasta called tordelli is an absolute must-try, as are befanini biscuits, torta co' becchi and the traditional sweet bread buccellato. The saying goes: Chi viene a Lucca e non mangia il buccellato è come non ci fosse mai stato (anyone who comes to Lucca and doesn't eat buccellato might as well not have been there). The Tuscan cigar is another of Lucca's prides and glories.
