Places to see in ( Stirling - UK )

Stirling is a city in central Scotland. The market town, surrounded by rich farmland, grew up connecting the royal citadel, the medieval old town with its merchants and tradesmen, the bridge and the port. ocated on the River Forth, Stirling is the administrative centre for the Stirling council area, and is traditionally the county town of Stirlingshire. Proverbially it is the strategically important Gateway to the Highlands. It has been said that Stirling, like a huge brooch clasps Highlands and Lowlands together. Similarly he who holds Stirling, holds Scotland is often quoted. Stirling's key position as the lowest bridging point of the River Forth before it broadens towards the Firth of Forth, made it a focal point for travel north or south.

Once the capital of Scotland, Stirling is visually dominated by Stirling Castle. Stirling also has a medieval parish church, the Church of the Holy Rude, where, on 29 July 1567, the infant James VI was anointed King of Scots by the Bishop of Orkney with the service concluding after a sermon by John Knox.[14] The poet King was educated by George Buchanan and grew up in Stirling. He was later also crowned King of England and Ireland on 25 July 1603, bringing closer the countries of the United Kingdom. Modern Stirling is a centre for local government, higher education, tourism, retail, and industry.

Stirling is renowned as the Gateway to the Highlands and is generally regarded as occupying a strategic position at the point where the flatter, largely undulating Scottish Lowlands meet the rugged slopes of the Highlands along the Highland Boundary Fault. Top of the Town consists of Broad Street, Castle Wynd, Ballengeich Pass, Lower Castle Hill Road, Darnley Street, Baker Street ( formerly Baxters St) and St Mary's Wynd. These streets all lead up to Stirling Castle and are the favourite haunt of tourists who stop off at the Old Town Jail, Mar's Wark, Argyll's Lodging and the castle. Ballengeich Pass leads to the graveyard at Ballengeich and the Castle Wynd winds past the old graveyard. The Top of the Town from Broad Street upwards is renowned for its cobblestoned roads, and cars can be heard rattling over the cobblestones on the way down. Craft shops and tourist-focused shops are evident on the way up and once at the top, panoramic views are available across Stirling and beyond. Other Areas of Stirling include :

Places to see in ( Drymen - UK )

Drymen is a village in Stirling district in central Scotland. Drymen lies to the west of the Campsie Fells and enjoys views to Dumgoyne on the east and to Loch Lomond on the west. The Queen Elizabeth Forest reaches down to the village edge, and the whole area is part of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park (the first National Park in Scotland).

It is often used as an overnight stop for hikers on the West Highland Way, and forms the western end of the Rob Roy Way. There are a couple of pubs and a walkers' shop. The Clachan pub claims to be the oldest pub in Scotland and to have a connection with the family of Rob Roy.

Despite the growth in the numbers of villagers commuting to Glasgow to work, there remains an agricultural tradition in the area. Every year, in early summer, an agricultural show is held in the fields around the Endrick Water. The Scottish family name Drummond is derived from the Scottish Gaelic form of the village's name.

I visited Scotland's most depressing town | Scotland day trip

I visited Scotland's most depressing town. This Scotland day trip to Alloa turned out to be a great success. It just shows that you shouldn't believe everything you read and experience it yourself!

05:48 Exploring Alloa

Alloa Tower, Alloa, Clackmannanshire

🎁 CELTIC CONNECTION SHOP: 🎁

ALLOA TOWER is an early 14th century tower house that served as the medieval residence of the Erskine family, later Earls of Mar. Retaining its original timber roof and battlements, the tower is one of the earliest, and largest, of Scottish tower houses, with immensely thick walls. The building has been extensively re-fenestrated during its history, but retains some internal medieval features. It was designated as a scheduled monument in 1960 and is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland.

The tower was originally built as part of a line of fortifications defending the north shore of the Firth of Forth. Several 19th century works, including Groome's Gazetteer, date the tower to the year 1223. Archaelogical investigations from the early 1990s date the original fortified house to the early 14th century, where it had a cellar that sometimes served as a pit prison. By the mid-14th century it had been enlarged with a great hall and rose to three storeys in height, with the entrance on the first floor. In the 15th century it was further enlarged to four/five levels while retaining its first-floor access. Late in the 16th century ground-floor access was probably added.

In December 1592 the widower John Erskine, Earl of Mar married Marie Stewart, a daughter of Esmé Stewart, 1st Duke of Lennox, and the wedding celebrations were held at Alloa.

John Erskine, 6th Earl of Mar, built a very large mansion (Alloa House) in 1710 that incorporated the tower as its annexe. The house burned down in 1800 and was rebuilt by George Angus in 1834–1838 for the 9th Earl. It was demolished sometime after 1868.

Discover the largest surviving keep in Scotland. Alloa Tower

This bold medieval keep may look forbidding, but inside it’s full of art and riches – not to mention intriguing tales. The tower dates back to the 14th century and was built to guard a strategically important ferry crossing on the nearby River Forth.

It became the ancestral seat of the Erskine family, the Earls of Mar and Kellie. This family have played a pivotal part in Scotland’s history through the centuries and were loyal supporters of the Stuart monarchs. Mary, Queen of Scots and her son, James VI, both spent part of their childhoods here under the guardianship of the Erskine family.

Alloa Tower was lavishly updated by John Erskine, 6th Earl of Mar, who created an 18th-century mansion within the ancient walls.

Ballengeich Cemetery was opened in 1888 to relieve pressure on the older Valley Cemetery and Mar’s Wark Garden. There are excellent views of Stirling Castle which lies close by to the west. There is also access to the walks on the Gowane Hills. Ballengeich is the old name for the small valley between the cemetery and the castle. As in other cemeteries, an area was set aside for the burials of people who did not pay for a family burial lair. Stirling Castle dominates the view in the background. There are no grave-markers in the free ground at the lower end of the Ballengeich Cemetery
