St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia
St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia
The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, commonly known as Saint Basil's Cathedral, is a church in Red Square in Moscow, Russia and is one of the most popular symbols of the country. The building, now a museum, is officially known as the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat or Pokrovsky Cathedral. It was built from 1555–1561 on orders from Ivan the Terrible and commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. It was the city's tallest building until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600. The Saint Basil's Cathedral is not to be confused with the Moscow Kremlin.
The original building, known as Trinity Church and later Trinity Cathedral, contained eight churches arranged around a ninth, central church of Intercession; a tenth church was erected in 1588 over the grave of venerated local saint Vasily (Basil). In the 16th and 17th centuries, the church, perceived (as with all churches in Byzantine Christianity) as the earthly symbol of the Heavenly City, was popularly known as the Jerusalem and served as an allegory of the Jerusalem Temple in the annual Palm Sunday parade attended by the Patriarch of Moscow and the tsar.
The building is shaped like the flame of a bonfire rising into the sky, a design that has no parallel in Russian architecture. Dmitry Shvidkovsky, in his book Russian Architecture and the West, states that it is like no other Russian building. Nothing similar can be found in the entire millennium of Byzantine tradition from the fifth to the fifteenth century ... a strangeness that astonishes by its unexpectedness, complexity and dazzling interleaving of the manifold details of its design. The cathedral foreshadowed the climax of Russian national architecture in the 17th century.
As part of the program of state atheism, the church was confiscated from the Russian Orthodox community as part of the Soviet Union's anti-theist campaigns and has operated as a division of the State Historical Museum since 1928. It was completely secularized in 1929 and remains a federal property of the Russian Federation. The church has been part of the Moscow Kremlin and Red Square UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. It is not actually within the Kremlin, but often served as a visual metonym for Russia in western media throughout the Cold War and to the modern day.
12 Facts About Saint Basil’s Cathedral
Originally constructed in the mid-16th century, Saint Basil’s Cathedral looms majestically near the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, and has stood watch over countless historical and political events in the country’s history.
1. IT WAS BUILT BY IVAN THE TERRIBLE.
The first Tsar of Russia, Ivan Vasilyevich—also known as Ivan Grozny (a nickname meaning “sparking terror or fear,” or stern), Ivan IV, and the Grand Prince of Moscow—ordered the construction of the cathedral in 1554. Ivan, grandson of Ivan the Great, saw the cathedral’s completion in 1561, but upon his death was interred at the nearby Archangel Cathedral.
2. THE CATHEDRAL WAS CONSTRUCTED IN HONOR OF A MILITARY CONQUEST.
Ivan’s goal of military dominance over a central Russian state led to numerous conflicts during his reign. In the 1550s, his armies defeated the independent Tatar khanates of Kazan and Astrakahn, and the church was built in honor of those victories.
3. IVAN ALLEGEDLY BLINDED THE CATHEDRAL'S ARCHITECT.
Stories and myths abound of Ivan’s raging temper, one of which involves him purposefully blinding the cathedral’s (unnamed) Italian architect so that its design could never be replicated. Other legends state that the architects were a pair of Russians named Barma and Posnik, or that they may have been one person.
4. MANY NAMES HAVE GRACED THE CATHEDRAL.
Dedicated to the protection of the Virgin Mary, the church is officially known as the Church of the Intercession, or the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin on the Moat. It has also been called Pokrovsky Cathedral, Pokrovsky Sobor, and Svyatoy Vasily Blazhenny.
5. IT WAS EVENTUALLY NAMED FOR A RUSSIAN 'FOOL.'
Born in 1468, Basil (also called the Blessed, the Beatific, and the Wonderworker of Moscow) was the son of commoners and was trained to be a cobbler. He became known for his prophetic powers and for being a “fool for Christ,” and following his death in 1557 was buried in the cathedral that would take its name after him.

The Cathedral of the Intercession-of-the-Virgin is commonly called Saint-Basil since it houses the tomb of Basil the Blessed. Built in the 16th century on the orders of Ivan the Terrible, Saint Basil's Cathedral is one of Moscow's most iconic sites. Today, it is a museum installed in the nine tower churches of the cathedral as well as in the tenth added later on the tomb of a madman of God, Basil, says the Blessed One.
The Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed commonly known as Saint Basil's Cathedral, is an Orthodox church in Red Square of Moscow, and is one of the most popular cultural symbols of Russia. The building, now a museum, is officially known as the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat, or Pokrovsky Cathedral. The cathedral has nine domes (each one corresponding to a different church) and is shaped like the flame of a bonfire rising into the sky, a design that has no parallel in Russian architecture. It was completely secularized in 1929, and remains a federal property of the Russian Federation. The church has been part of the Moscow Kremlin and Red Square UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, weekly Orthodox Christian services with prayer to St. Basil have been restored since 1997.
Grand Palace, St. Petersburg, Russia
The Peterhof Palace is a series of palaces and gardens located in Petergof, Saint Petersburg, Russia, commissioned by Peter the Great as a direct response to the Palace of Versailles by Louis XIV of France. Originally intended in 1709 for country habitation, Peter the Great sought to expand the property as a result of his visit to the French royal court in 1717, inspiring the nickname used by tourists The Russian Versailles In the period between 1714 and 1728, the architecture was designed by Domenico Trezzini, and the style he employed became the foundation for the Petrine Baroque style favored throughout Saint Petersburg. Also in 1714, Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond designed the gardens, likely chosen due to his previous collaborations with Versailles landscaper André Le Nôtre. Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli completed an expansion from 1747 to 1756 for Elizabeth of Russia. The palace-ensemble along with the city center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

#Pushkin Tsarskoe Selo | Catherine Palace | The Great Hall | Antechambers | guide tour.
The Great Hall or Bright Gallery, as it was called in the eighteenth century, is the largest state room in the palace. It was created to Rastrelli’s design between 1752 and 1756. The stylish hall with a floor area of over 800 square metres was intended as the venue for official receptions and celebrations, banquets, balls and masquerades.
The hall occupies the whole width of the palace and has windows on both sides. In summer the interior is filled with light that plays across the gilding throughout the day. In the evening 696 candles, framed by mirrors, illuminate the Bright Gallery. The sumptuous Baroque decoration creates an illusion of boundless space: the alternation of large windows and mirrors visually expands the hall, while the image on the ceiling, framed by a painted colonnade, extends the space upwards.
The sculptural and ornamental carving that covers the walls of the Great Hall in a single continuous pattern was produced by 130 Russian woodcarvers working from sketches by Rastrelli and models by the decorative sculptor Johann Franz Duncker. The carved décor is especially sumptuous on the end walls that are adorned by compositions featuring many figures.
The original ceiling painting was made in 1752–54 from a sketch by Giuseppe Valeriani (1708–1762), a distinguished Venetian decorative artist who came to Russia at the invitation of Rastrelli. He was assisted by Antonio Peresinotti (1708–1778) and a number of Russian artists – the Belsky and Firsov brothers, S. Ivanov, N. Afanasyev, B. Sukhodolsky, G. Kozlov, I. Vasilyev and M. Sergeyev. The painting incorporated three separate compositions: an Allegory of Russia, an Allegory of Peace and an Allegory of Victory.
In 1953–54, during restoration work on St Michael’s Castle in St Petersburg, the side parts of Valeriani’s ceiling painting – the Allegory of Peace and Allegory of Victory that had been considered lost – were rediscovered. Thanks to that find, it was decided to recreate the ceiling decoration in its original form, returning the two surviving elements to the Catherine Palace. The recreation of the central part was aided by the existence of so me rough sketches by Valeriani and his description of the composition with an interpretation of all the allegories plus a drawing made by Stakenschneider in 1857, when the ceilings in several of the state rooms were redecorated to designs by the court architect. The project was tackled by a team of restoration artists led by Ya.A. Kazakov. In both scale and complexity this task was unparalleled in world restoration practice. The patterned parquet of the light-oak and bog-oak floor that burnt during the war was recreated from Rastrelli’s original designs and a surviving fragment.
Antechambers
Visitors arriving at Tsarskoe Selo in the mid-eighteenth century during the reign of Elizabeth Petrovna would find themselves first in the Antechambers adjoining the main staircase in the southern wing of the palace. These rooms were located before the Great Hall and were intended as places for people to wait before audiences and the public appearances of the empress. Reconstruction later in the century turned two of the antechambers into the Arabesque and Lyons Halls, leaving only three of the original five.
The antechambers were lit by windows on both sides and finished to Rastrelli’s designs. Their architecture echoed that of the throne room of the palace: the main element in their decoration was gilded woodcarving, the portals around the doors being given especially opulent treatment with three-dimensional sculpture, cartouches and garlands. Further notes were added to the resonant Baroque chord by ceilings incorporating huge painted canvases and a geometrical-pattern parquet floor of precious types of wood.
The ceiling paintings had subjects from ancient mythology: in the First and Second Antechambers there was The Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne by Pietro and Aloiso Gradizzi and Antonio Peresinotti, in the Third Mount Olympus. There are different opinions on who painted this last work. Alexander Benois attributed it to Peresinotti; some present-day researchers name Ivan Belsky, while archive documents state that the idea and composition of the painting belonged to Pietro Gradizzi, with Belsky only assisting him in the execution of his conception. During the occupation the painting was lost and the image we have of it today is based on a watercolour by Alexander Kolbe and pre-1941 photographs that provided a basis for the recreation of Mount Olympus after the war.
The Third Antechamber was finished in a manner different from the others: in the later eighteenth century, when the whole southern part of the palace was reconstructed on the orders of Catherine II, fluted columns and four marble fireplaces were installed here.

Approaching St. Basil's Cathedral from the southern end we gradually get a view of the large expanse of Red Square with the Kremlin on the left and GUM on the right.
The Cathedral of Intercession of Theotokos on the Moat, popularly known as the Cathedral of Basil the Blessed, is a Russian Orthodox cathedral erected on the Red Square in Moscow in 15551561. Built on the order of Ivan IV of Russia to commemorate the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan, it marks the geometric center of the city and the hub of its growth since the 14th century.
The original building, known as Trinity Church and later Trinity Cathedral, contained eight side churches arranged around the ninth, central church of Intercession; the tenth church was erected in 1588 over the grave of venerated local Fool Vasily (Basil). In the 16th and the 17th centuries the cathedral, perceived as the earthly symbol of the Heavenly City,] was popularly known as the Jerusalem and served as an allegory of the Jerusalem Temple in the annual Palm Sunday parade attended by the Patriarch of Moscow and the tsar.
The building's design, shaped as a flame of a bonfire rising into the sky, has no analogues in Russian architecture: It is like no other Russian building. Nothing similar can be found in the entire millenium of Byzantine tradition from the fifth to fifteenth century... a strangeness that astonishes by its unexpectedness, complexity and dazzling interleaving of the manifold details of its design. The cathedral foreshadowed the climax of Russian national architecture in the 17th century but has never been reproduced directly.
The cathedral has operated as a division of the State Historical Museum since 1928. It was completely secularized in 1929 and, as of 2009, remains a federal property of the Russian Federation. The cathedral has been part of the Moscow Kremlin and Red Square UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.

This 3D video for viewing with 3D devises or red-cyan glasses.
Monument Millennium of Russia - a monument erected in Novgorod in 1862 in honor of the millennial anniversary of the legendary Vikings calling to Russia.
The authors of the project of the monument are sculptors Mikhail Mikeshin Ivan Schroeder and architect Viktor Hartmann. The monument is located in the Novgorod Detinets, opposite the St. Sophia Cathedral and the former building of the government offices.
The monument is a giant ball-Power on bell-shaped pedestal; the general shape of a bell-shaped monument (according to some assumptions, was intended to announce to the descendants of the heroic past of Russia).
Around six powers sculptural groups are set. The total height of the monument to 15.7 m (height pedestal - 6 m, height of figures - 3.3 m cross on Power - 3 m).
The diameter of the granite pedestal - 9 m; ball-Power - 4 m; circle high relief - 26.5 m monument metal weight - 100 tons of bronze casting weight - 65.5 tons (the ball-Power - 400 pounds;. colossal figures - 150 pounds;
cross on the ball - 28 pounds).
Total monument contains 128 figures.
Sculptural images are divided into three levels:
A group of two pieces - an angel with the cross in his hand (the personification of the Orthodox Church) and a kneeling woman (the personification of Russia). Installed at the top of the group on the Power (emblem of royal power), crowning composition.
Power decorated with relief ornament of the cross (symbol of the unity of the Church and the autocracy) and straddles the inscription: the Emperor accomplished tysyachelѣtіyu state Rossіyskago unto prosperous tsarstvovanіe Alexander ІІgo summer of 1862.
Central part of the monument took 17 pieces (ie. N. Colossal figure), grouped in six sculptural groups around the ball-Power, symbolizing the different periods of the history of the Russian state
(According to the official historiography of the time).
Each group is focused on a certain part of the world that has a symbolic meaning and shows the role of each of the sovereign in the strengthening of certain frontiers of the state.
At the bottom of the monument is a frieze in which are placed high reliefs 109 historical figures, embodying the idea of the support of autocratic power in the society in the person of its most illustrious representatives.
Within each section are arranged according to the person's position on the monument left to right.
In 1857, the eve of the anniversary of the 1000th anniversary calling Rurik to rule on the wishes of the Minister of Interior and the subsequent decision of the Committee of Ministers announced a competition for the best design of the monument,
which is planned to put in Novgorod, where, according to legend, the Vikings and was called. The government announced the beginning of widespread collecting money from all classes of the population for the construction of this monument.
It was planned that the monument costs half a million rubles. But the people sacrificed only about 150 thousand. Rub .; and a sum of 400 thousand. rub. It has been added to the state.
In April, 1859 in the press announced a competition among sculptors to carry out this project, and also voiced the program, which was supposed to correspond to the monument (six periods of Russian history).
On the projects was given six months (until 1 November 1859). Six periods were to be implemented in the sculptural groups, the height of the monument was to be no more than 18 meters.
The competition has been submitted 52 projects (submitted anonymously under mottos), of which the Competition Council established at the Academy of Arts, chaired by its vice-president Prince GG Gagarin with the participation of architects and engineers,
seconded by the Chief of Railway Transport Administration and public buildings, declared the relevant provisions of the contest only three projects:
architect Antipov. The project was an imitation of Bavaria in Munich and the monument was too big for the Novgorod area
Academician Gornostaeva. In this project, Russia has been allegorically depicted as a large statue. The Commission agreed that this allegory is not understandable to the general and will impress.

Pilsen, Czech Republic 4K
Plzeň (Pilsen in English), is a city in the Czech Republic. About 90 kilometres (56 miles) west of Prague in western Bohemia, it is the fourth most populous city in the Czech Republic with about 169,000 inhabitants.
The city is known worldwide for Pilsner beer, created by Bavarian brewer Josef Groll in the city in 1842.
The Czech Republic, also known as Czechia, is a landlocked country in Central Europe. Historically known as Bohemia, it is bordered by Austria to the south, Germany to the west, Poland to the northeast, and Slovakia to the southeast. The Czech Republic has a hilly landscape that covers an area of 78,871 square kilometers (30,452 sq mi) with a mostly temperate continental and oceanic climate. The capital and largest city is Prague; other major cities and urban areas include Brno, Ostrava, Plzeň and Liberec.
The Duchy of Bohemia was founded in the late 9th century under Great Moravia. It was formally recognized as an Imperial State of the Holy Roman Empire in 1002 and became a kingdom in 1198. Following the Battle of Mohács in 1526, the whole Crown of Bohemia was gradually integrated into the Habsburg monarchy. The Protestant Bohemian Revolt led to the Thirty Years' War. After the Battle of the White Mountain, the Habsburgs consolidated their rule. With the dissolution of the Holy Empire in 1806, the Crown lands became part of the Austrian Empire.
In the 19th century, the Czech lands became more industrialized, and in 1918 most of it became part of the First Czechoslovak Republic following the collapse of Austria-Hungary after World War I. Czechoslovakia was the only country in Central and Eastern Europe to remain a parliamentary democracy during the entirety of the interwar period. After the Munich Agreement in 1938, Nazi Germany systematically took control over the Czech lands. Czechoslovakia was restored in 1945 and became an Eastern Bloc communist state following a coup d'état in 1948. Attempts to liberalize the government and economy were suppressed by a Soviet-led invasion of the country during the Prague Spring in 1968. In November 1989, the Velvet Revolution ended communist rule in the country, and on 1 January 1993, Czechoslovakia was dissolved, with its constituent states becoming the independent states of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The Czech Republic is a unitary parliamentary republic and developed country with an advanced, high-income social market economy. It is a welfare state with a European social model, universal health care and free-tuition university education. It ranks 12th in the UN inequality-adjusted human development and 24th in the World Bank Human Capital Index. It ranks as the 8th safest and most peaceful country and 29th in democratic governance. The Czech Republic is a member of NATO, the European Union, OECD, OSCE, and the Council of Europe.
