🇸🇾 Street Food in Damascus:

ALEPPO, SYRIA - It’s been said that Aleppo is one of the original food capitals of the world - people came from all over to learn about new recipes and ingredients that passed through this ancient city. Today we’re going on an ultimate Syrian food tour in Aleppo!

► Thank you to Rami from Syrian Guides:

Aleppo Bab Al Ahmar - Located on the outside of Aleppo Citadel you’ll find this traditional Syrian restaurant that specializes in breakfast dishes. Rami and I had a breakfast feast to begin our day with some of the Levantine food classics like hummus and foul, and a special dish called Maamounieh. Total price - 250,000 SYP ($16.66) for everything

After breakfast we continued to visit the Aleppo Citadel and Al-Madina Souq. Although so much was destroyed, it’s amazing to see that Aleppo is coming back to life, and people are rebuilding. Within the winding alleys of the market we tried a simple falafel, which was fantastic, but just a start to the next falafel we’d be trying later in the afternoon. We also visited an 800 year old soup factory at Jebeili Soap Factory and ate local Aleppo Syrian kebabs at Abu Dibo Kebab.

Cordoba Restaurant ( - One of the greatest restaurants in Aleppo, Syria is Cordoba, famous for their Aleppo cuisine, and especially for serving of the best versions of Kebab karaz - Aleppo sour cherry kebab. Total price - 470,000 SYP ($31.33) for everything
Amo Hamido Falafel ( - Next up we went to what is probably the most famous and popular Syrian street food spot in Aleppo, known for their giant falafel sandwiches! Price - 15,000 SYP ($1) per sandwich

Sujuk Sandwich ( - We continued on this Syrian street food tour in Aleppo to eat an Armenian sujuk sandwich, which was extremely tasty. Price - 17,000 SYP ($1.13) per sandwich

Abu Hagob Restaurant - Finally we had a dinner at a legendary Armenian Syrian restaurant where they made a meal of many small plates to eat with arak. The kibbeh nayyeh, raw minced lamb and bulgur, was especially delicious. Total price - 250,000 SYP ($16.66) for everything

Aleppo, Syria is and always has been a food capital of the world!

Today was a beautiful and also difficult day in Syria. We traveled all the way from Damascus to Aleppo in Northern Syria - along the way we saw so much war destruction, met incredible people, saw historical sites, and ate some delicious food. Today I’m sharing with you our food road trip in Syria.

► Thank you to Rami from Syrian Guides:

Here’s what we did:

Maaloula - After about an hour drive from Damascus, we arrived at the mountain town of Maaloula (where they still speak Aramaic), with so much history. First stop we went to Maaloula Manakeesh to eat some Manakeesh. Total price - 125,000 SYP ($8.33) for everything

Shuaa Restaurant - Along the highway we stopped to eat at this famous lamb restaurant. Total price - 350,000 SYP ($23.33) for everything

We continued driving to Homs, a city that was unfortunately hit very hard by the war. But people were in high spirits and we were greeted with kindness and hospitality.

Hama Lamp Kunafa - Finally we continued our journey to Hama, to eat a few essential Syrian foods in this historical city. We mainly tried batersh - roasted eggplant, ghee fried lamb. Total price - 550,000 SYP ($36.66) for everything

The people of Syria are still hurting and are very much under control by an oppressive regime. But they also deserve to live as normal lives as possible and be seen as real people living real lives in today's world.

A Tour of Aleppo Citadel in Syria - Post War and Earthquake

Usage of the Citadel hill dates back at least to the middle of the 3rd millennium BCE. Occupied by many civilizations over time – including the Greeks, Byzantines, Ayyubids and Mamluks – the majority of the construction as it stands today is thought to originate from the Ayyubid period. An extensive conservation work took place in the 2000s by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, in collaboration with Aleppo Archeological Society. Dominating the city, the Citadel is part of the Ancient City of Aleppo, a UNESCO World Heriatage Site since 1986.

During the 2010s, the Citadel received significant damage during the lengthy Battle of Aleppo. It was reopened to the public in early 2017 with repairs to damaged parts underway.

circa 3000 BCE
Temple of Storm God Hadad
The Hadad Temple represents an exceptionally important archaeological discovery. By providing material evidence on Aleppo’s earliest known history it has allowed researchers to explore a previously unknown layer of the unique city, which was followed by continuous settlement in the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Zangid, Ayyubid, Mamluk, and Ottoman periods.

circa 1200 CE
Ayyubid Palace
Ddespite its modest proportions, it was formally and iconographically associated with a well-established iconography of power, an iconography that was first conceived in classical Islamic palaces and later perpetuated in the palaces of the Ayyubid and Artuqid dynasties.

circa 1200 CE
Entrance Complex
The enormous stone bridge constructed by Sultan al-Zahir al-Ghazi over the moat led to an imposing bent entrance complex. Would-be assailants to the castle would have to take over six turns up a vaulted entrance ramp, over which were machicolations for pouring hot liquids on attackers from the mezzanine above. Secret passageways wind through the complex, and the main passages are decorated with figurative reliefs. The Ayyubid block is topped by the Mamluk Throne Hall, a hall where Mamluk sultans entertained large audiences and held official functions.

circa 1213 CE
Jami' al-Kabir
The Great Mosque of Aleppo Citadel was constructed in 1213-14 CE (610 Hj.) under the patronage of Ayyubid Sultan al-Malik al-Zahir Ghazi. Its situation at the highest point of the Citadel, with its towering minaret that is 21 meters high, extended both the citadels visibility and its defense to greater distances. Here the minaret begins to play a religious and military role; this duality merges the virtues of power and piety in the icon of the Islamic faith.

circa 1400 CE
Throne Hall
The magnificent throne hall was added on top of the twelfth-century fortified entrance complex, during the restoration of the citadel. The new throne hall was the grandest space in the citadel and it was used for official functions and for entertaining by the rulers of Aleppo and by Mamluk sultans visiting from Cairo. It was added following a sack of the citadel by the conqueror Timur, known to the West as Tamerlane, in 1400, when the Mamluk governors of Aleppo embarked on a large-scale reconstruction program.

circa 1505 CE
Barbican Fortifications
In a building campaign that lasted from 1505-6 CE and then 1509-10 CE (911-915 Hj.), Mamluk Sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri constructed the lower tower (barbican) of the Entrance Complex and rebuilt two towers on the glacis: one on the south side, east of the Entrance Complex, and one on the north.
