This is the 3rd and final video of my Iraq Travel series. Iraq is a very interesting country to visit, especially because almost no tourists go there. Most people only visit the Irqai-Kurdistan region in the North, but we decided to fly to Baghdad without really having a plan.
We wanted to see the ancient ruins of Babylon, one of history's greatest cities. Though there is not much left of Babylon, a lot of the walls have been rebuilt and the Lion statue of Babylon remains. Al Hilla is the closest city to the ancient site, so I also take you to some local Falafel vendors in Al Hilla.

Al-Sahla Mosque (Arabic: مسجد السهلة), also known as al-Suhayl Mosque ( مسجد السهیل), Banū Ẓafar Mosque ( مسجد بنی ظفر) and ʿAbd al-Qays Mosque ( مسجد عبدالقیس), is one of the best-known Islamic mosques built in the first/seventh century by some Arab tribes of Kufa, about two kilometers northwest of the Great Mosque of Kufa
The mosque is one of the oldest mosques associated with Imam al-Mahdi , the twelfth Shiite Imam. There is a place, called maqam in the mosque attributed to Imam al-Mahdi (a), and on some accounts, this mosque is where Imam al-Mahdi (a) will live after his reappearance. In the Shiite culture, al-Sahla Mosque is one of the most important mosques. In different parts of the mosque's courtyard, some mihrabs are built and each is called in the name of a religious leader, such as maqam of Imam al-Sajjad , Imam al-Sadiq (a), Ibrahim , Idris and Khidr .
Appellation
Al-Sahla Mosque was built by the Banu Zafar tribe, a clan of helpers (Ansar). Imam 'Ali allegedly took the Banu Zafar Mosque to be equivalent to the Kufa Mosque. The mosque is called al-Suhayl, because its architect was a person called al-Suhayl, and it is called 'Abd al-Qays, because 'Abd al-Qays was the tribe in whose area of residence the mosque was constructed, and it is called Banu Zafar, since they are a clan of the 'Abd al-Qays tribe.
Ibn al-Faqih quoted Imam 'Ali (a) as saying that: there are four sacred places in Kufa in which four mosques have been constructed. He was asked: what are those mosques? He replied: one of them is the Zafar or al-Sahla Mosque.

Arba'een. An annual pilgrimage to the Imam Hussein Holy Shrine in Karbala and one of the most important events in the islam calendar. An estimated 25 million people come from all over the world to pay their respects to the memory of Imam Hussein. 25 million!!!
The Iraq Bikers take us to the Imam Ali Holy Shrine in Najaf (it would have been far too busy and difficult to reach the centre of the event in Karbala) and we are met with one of the most powerful experiences of our lives.
This is not widely reported in global news but is an event that is unfathomably impressive. Iraq provides EVERYTHING for free, to EVERYONE who visits. It is truly insane.

Another day on the road in Iraq; waking up in Baghdad, then making our way through the various shrines near Hillah before finally bedding down in Najaf.
Today we saw more than just the Islamic history in the region, an insight into how Iraq was once the cradle for civilisation.

BABILONIA
Babilonia (1696 – 1654 SM) atau Babel adalah negara kuno yang terletak di selatan Mesopotamia tepatnya di tepian Sungai Eufrat, di dekat tempat yang sekarang disebut Al Hillah, Irak Selatan.
Babilonia berkembang menjadi sebuah kerajaan besar pada masa Hammurabi (1792-1750 sebelum Masehi).
Asal usul yang pasti dari dinasti ini sulit diketahui secara pasti karena keadaan topografi Babilon itu sendiri, yang memiliki permukaan air yang tinggi, sehingga tidak menyisakan banyak peninggalan arkeologis yang utuh.
Tidak banyak yang diketahui tentang para raja dari Sumu-abum sampai Sin-muballit selain fakta bahwa mereka adalah orang Amoriah dan bukannya orang Akkadia yang mengumpulkan wilayah tanah tidak terlalu luas. Ketika Hammurabi naik tahta menjadi raja Babilon, kekaisaran itu hanya terdiri dari beberapa kota dan sedikit wilayah di sekitarnya: Dilbat, Sippar, Kish, dan Borsippa.
Hammurabi berhasil memperoleh banyak sekali kemenangan militer dengan menaklukan kota-kota lain yang dapat memberi keuntungan bagi Babilon.
Meskipun Babilon sudah menjadi jauh lebih kuat berkat Hammurabi, Babilon masih belum menjadi daerah penting di Mesopotamia, tidak seperti Assyria, yang ketika itu dipimpin oleh Shamshi-Adad I, ataupun Larsa, yang ketika itu dipimpin oleh Rim-Sin.
Pada tahun ketiga belas kekuasaannya, Hammurabi mulai menjadikan Babilon sebagai pusat dari apa yang nantinya akan menjadi kekaisaran besar. Pada tahun tersebut, dia merebut Larsa dari Rim-Sin, sehingga dia memiliki kendali atas pusat-pusat perkotaan yang menguntungkan seperti Nippur, Ur, Uruk, dan Isin. Dengan kata lain, Hammurabi memperoleh kendali atas seluruh Mesopotamia selatan. Kekuatan politik lainnya yang patut diperhitungkan di daerah itu pada milenium kedua adalah Eshnunna, yang berhasil direbut oleh Hammurabi di sekitar tahun 1761 SM. Babilon kemudian memanfaatkan jalur perdagangan Eshnuna yang sudah sangat mapan serta kestabilan ekonomi yang mereka miliki. Tidak lama setelah itu pasukan Hammurabi merebut Mari, kota terakhir yang memberinya kendali atas seluruh wilayah yang membentuk Mesopotamia di bawah Dinasti Ketiga Ur pada milenium ketiga.
Nama lain Hammurabi adalah Hammurapi-ilu, bermakna Hammurapi sang dewa. Dia mungkin saja adalah raja Amraphel dari Shinar atau Sinear dalam catatan Yahudi dan Injil, yang Sezaman dengan Ibrahim.
Terjemahan terkini dari lembaran Chogha Gavaneh yang bertahun sekitar 1800 SM menunjukkan adanya hubungan yang erat antara kota ini yang terletak bukit Islamabad di Zagros Tengah dan daerah Dyala.
Lembaran Venus Ammisaduqa (contoh dari beberapa lembaran tanah liat versi kuno) juga terkenal, dan beberapa buku mengenai itu telah diterbitkan. Beberapa usulan waktu asal telah diajukan namun waktu asal yang terdapat dibanyak buku tampaknya sudah tidak akurat dan tidak benar.
Era Raja Nebukadnezar
Seorang sejarawan Yunani kuno, Herodotus menulis bahwa sekitar tahun 450 SM, “Keindahan Babylon melebihi kota manapun di dunia yang dikenal.”
Ditemukan Literature bangsa Babylonia dibangun dengan sangat bagus dan rekaman cuneiform (tulisan-tulisan kuno berbentuk paku).
Ilmuwan, Dr. W. A. Criswell menyebut keistimewaannya kalau lapisan warna-warni yang ditemukan pada dinding bangunan zaman sekarang merupakan hasil cetakan dari pabrik, di Babylon warna-warni itu berasal dari bebatuan asli yang diambil dari alam, yang jumlahnya sangat terbatas.
Di balik gemerlapnya kota Babylon, ternyata tersimpan derita ribuan para budak yang harus kerja paksa untuk membangun kota itu. Mereka adalah tawanan perang yang diambil dari berbagai kerajaan yang berhasil ditaklukan Raja Nebukadnezar. Bahkan berbagai benda berharga seperti emas, perak, dan bebatuan indah yang digunakan untuk menghias berbagai bangunan di kota itu merupakan hasil rampasan dari daerah taklukan.
Memang cerita Kota Babylon yang melegenda tak terlepas dari kedigdayaan Kerajaan Babylonia baru di bawah Raja Nebukadnezar. Di bawah Nebukadnezar, banyak kerajaan-kerajaan lain yang berhasil ditaklukan, sehingga dari tahun ke tahun wilayah kerajaan itu bertambah luas dan harta hasil rampasan pun semakin melimpah. Tak mengherankan jika Babylon Baru kemudian menjelma menjadi kerajaan superpower yang wilayahnya paling luas pada saat itu.
Berdasarkan catatan-catatan kunoditemukan adanya kesinambungan peradaban antara Babylon lama dan Baru. Mulai dari sistem irigasinya, ilmu astronomi, sistem hukum, pengobatan, literatur, matematika, arsitektur, dan sebagainya..
Walaupun jejak-jejak Kota Babylon Lama sudah tak bisa ditemukan lagi, tapi Hammurabi meninggalkan warisan berharga berupa Kode Hammurabi lewat catatan kuno yang masih terpelihara sampai sekarang. Kode Hammurabi adalah semacam UU yang disusun secara sistematis, mengatur berbagai bidang kehidupan secara lengkap, dan diumumkan kepada masyarakat secara luas.
