We visited beautiful Abingdon, Virginia while on our way to Ocean City, MD.

It is such a beautiful, historic town. We take a walk down Main Street and also go over to the entrance of the Virginia Creeper Trail.
This town is worth visiting if you love history, beautiful architecture, love biking and trails.
This is just a glimpse of some of the beautiful buildings and the beautiful area of Abingdon, VA
There are a lot of churches, boutiques, The Martha Resort, The Tavern and many more places to see.

A little park with big history - Island Grove Park, Abington Ma.

The little park with a big history. It was an industrial area, an amusement park, a meeting place for abolitionists against slavery, a train route and now a scenic park for all to enjoy... but if you look closer you can find history all around you just waiting to be seen once more. Happy Exploring 🍃

Island Grove Park is a municipal park of the town of Abington, Massachusetts. It consists of a 17-acre parcel of land whose principal feature is a peninsula jutting into Island Grove Pond, a 35-acre body of water which was created by impounding the Shumatuscacant River in c. 1700. The area has a significant history, first as an industrial site, then as an amusement park, before it became the wooded park it is now. The park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 as the Island Grove Park National Register District.

In 1912, as part of Abington’s Bicentennial Celebration, the Abington Sons of Union Veterans built the majestic Memorial Arch and Bridge in memory of the service and sacrifices of the Civil War soldiers and sailors from Abington. This bridge created an entrance to the Park from west of Island Grove Pond.

Prior to the Civil War, Island Grove Park was the site for many abolitionist meetings. These spirited meetings undoubtedly contributed to Abington’s active involvement in the anti-slavery movement, and consequently, the Civil War. After the Old Colony railroad was put through in 1845, this idyllic spot became easily accessible and thousands would come to the rallies.

Since the days when Ezekiel Reed erected an amusement area at the park, it has been constantly used and enjoyed by the residents of Abington and the South Shore for many different types of recreation. Island Grove Park remains in active use today including swimming, children’s summer vacation programs, boating, fishing, ice skating, concerts and as a quiet place to walk.

In addition to bringing people to Abington, the railroad service also gave Abingtonians access to other places, especially Boston, allowing residents to work in the big city while continuing to live in their own home towns. Thus the commuting lifestyle came about and began the transformation of Abington from an industrial town into a bedroom community.
