Places to see in ( Newport - UK )

Newport is a cathedral and university city and unitary authority area in south east Wales. Newport is located on the River Usk close to its confluence with the Severn Estuary, approximately 12 miles northeast of Cardiff.

Newport has been a port since medieval times, when the first Newport Castle was built by the Normans. The town outgrew the earlier Roman town of Caerleon, immediately upstream, and gained its first charter in 1314. It grew significantly in the 19th century, when its port became the focus of coal exports from the eastern valleys of South Wales. Until the rise of Cardiff from the 1850s, Newport was Wales' largest coal-exporting port. It was the site of the last large-scale armed insurrection in Britain, the Newport Rising of 1839 led by the Chartists.

During the 20th century, when the docks declined in importance, Newport remained an important manufacturing and engineering centre. Newport was granted city status in 2002. Newport hosted the Ryder Cup in 2010. The city was the venue for the 2014 NATO summit. Newport is the largest urban area within the historic county boundaries of Monmouthshire and the preserved county of Gwent. The City of Newport, which includes some surrounding rural areas as well as the built up area, is governed by Newport City Council.

The M4 motorway comes within a mile (1.6 km) of the city centre, and Newport can be accessed from six junctions (from 24–28 inclusive). The Great Western main railway line also passes through the heart of the city, stopping at Newport railway station. Newport is well linked with nearby Cardiff, with approximately six rail and five bus services between the cities every hour. The Old Green Interchange is an elevated roundabout over the A4042 (Heidenheim Drive) at the western end of Newport Bridge. Newport's pedestrianised High Street runs southwest from the interchange through Westgate Square to the pedestrianised Commercial Street. Queensway passes Newport railway station and links the Old Green Interchange to Newport Civic Centre via Clytha Park Road.

Anglesey Barracks - an abandoned street of houses in Snowdonia

Erin the archaeologist visits Anglesey Barracks - an abandoned street of houses in Snowdonia. An abandoned row of quarry workers' cottages (many of them from Anglesey, from where it was too far to commute every day, so they lodged here during the week) at what was the second largest quarry in the world in Llanberis, near Yr Wyddfa / Snowdon. Erin follows a circular walk to visit parts of the quarry, explore the houses and their features, and ends her walk at the National Slate Museum near Llyn Padarn lake

Mynydd Machen

The above link shows a 360 degree panoramic film taken from the trig point on Mynydd Machen. It begins looking south west towards Cardiff. The film then rotates clockwise around the trig point, looking west across the ridges of the South Wales valleys, then north, again with Pen y Fan in the distance and east (the view towards the Severn Bridges slightly obscurred by the beautiful communications masts) then south over Newport, Cardiff and the Bristol Channel. The hill is also one of the peaks visited on the Save Our Cardiff Reservoirs Walk on the 4th May 2013.

DJI Phantom 3 Pro drone - Lake District - Honister, Buttermere

This video is a combination of video footage taken using Phantom 3 Professional 4K drone, Sony HVR Z5E broadcast quality video camera mounted on a tripod, Lumix FZ72 camera and Nikon 5100 DSLR

It is my intention to go back and film the Pass three ways: full length (1.5miles / 2.4km) with the drone the stream and full length using a Gopro Black Hero 9 in the car and one mounted near to the n/s front wheel arch so there is a 'close to the road' view.

Honister Pass is a mountain pass in the English Lake District. It is located on the B5289 road, linking Seatoller, in the valley of Borrowdale, to Gatesgarth at the southern end of Buttermere. The pass reaches an altitude of 1,167 feet (356 m), making it one of the highest in the region, and also one of the steepest, with gradients of up to 1-in-4 (25%). The saddle at the watershed is known as Honister Hause, using the Cumbrian word hause for such a feature.

Honister Pass is one of three passes that link the tourist area around Keswick, including Derwent Water and Borrowdale, with the valley of the River Cocker, including the lakes of Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater. From north to south these passes are Whinlatter Pass, Newlands Pass and Honister Pass.

Honister Slate Mine and Honister Hause Youth Hostel are located at the summit of the pass.

Footpaths lead from the summit of the pass to Fleetwith Pike to the west, Grey Knotts to the south, and Dale Head to the north.

Honister Pass holds the UK 24-hour rainfall record; in the 24 hours to 6 pm on 5 December 2015, 341.4 mm of rain fell there.
