Dostyk street, Abay avenue 4K Winter Walk, Almaty, Kazakhstan

Walking from Starbucks faced towards Kazakhstan Hotel to Abay Ave and further in the winter.

Dostyk Avenue in the tsarist era was called Kolpakovsky Avenue - in honor of the Governor-General of Semirechye. The street started from the Apothecary Garden, where the Ascension Cathedral was located, and continued for many kilometers to the south - to the very mountains of the Zailiyskiy Alatau, turning into Gornaya Street. In 1920, the avenue was renamed in honor of the leader of the October Revolution, Vladimir Lenin. Despite the name, this area has not been a place for major architectural and urban development projects for a long time. It was built up mainly with low-rise residential buildings and small public buildings.

But in 1965, on the eve of the approaching centenary of the birth of Lenin, work began on designing a new look for the avenue - it was supposed to be the largest in the country and involved a complete renovation of buildings along the street. Many experimental high-rise buildings were constructed back then and the key element supposed to be the square on Abay-Lenin crossing. The main element of the square, which consolidated its formation, was the Lenin Palace built in 1970. In 2010, during the preparation of the city for the Asian Games, the building was completely reconstructed by Kazgor Design Academy. From the original appearance of the Palace, only the general composition remained, and the architecture of the facades, finishing materials and interiors were completely changed.

Somewhat later, in 1977, the construction of the high-rise dominant of the square, the Kazakhstan Hotel, was completed. Its design was carried out by architects from the Institute Kazgorstroyproekt Yu. Ratushny, L. Ukhobotov, A. Anchugov, V. Kashtanov. The entire ensemble of the square was architecturally united by a kind of cascade of fountains and pools. The cascade began with a small reservoir with a summer cafe near the Arman cinema. It was followed by the pools on the square in front of the Lenin Palace. A certain role in the cascade was also played by the Head Ditch, which separates from the Malaya Almatinka River under the Lenin Palace. It passed a little north of the square among a row of pines. Further, the cascade turned into a large pool filled with water through small drains in the retaining wall, creating the illusion of a solid stream of water going through the area. The final element of the complex was the swimming pool in front of the Kazakhstan Hotel, where one of the tallest fountains in the city was located.

The Palace of Political Education was the last to enter the ensemble of the square in 1982, now it is a building of Caspian University.

Abay street has less changes since back then, apart from Golovnoy Aryk renovation in 2018.

V7: A Walk In Almaty

I spent the day walking around in Almaty and checking out a few of its many landmarks. There is so much more to see, but I will have to leave the rest for another video. While at it, I also ate a delicious doner sandwich.

Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan, with a population of around 2 million people. It was the capital of Kazakhstan from 1929 (during Kazakhstan's various iterations as part of the Soviet Union and also during its first few years of independence) up to 1997 when the government relocated the capital to Astana.

The name Almaty has its roots in the medieval settlement of Almatau, which existed near the present-day city and which means Apple Mountain. Another theory holds that the name is derived from the Kazakh word for 'apple' and is often translated as 'full of apples'.

Whatever the origin of the name, the city is surrounded by mountains that produce delicious apples that are full of flavor - I tried some and they are very tasty indeed!

Starbucks in Kazakhstan, Almaty, 4k Walk

Another winter 4K walk in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
It's a short walk around the block of Abay Ave, Kunayev street, Kurmangazy street and Dostyk Avenue it ends up in Starbucks Coffee that has an amazing view of Kazakhstan hotel. It is located in former House of Political Education, that was built in 1981 by Ratushny and Balykbayev. There were also famous Dandellion fountains that later were demolished during so-called renovation of 2016. One of the wings was completely destroyed and rebuilt in a modern way - it is where a coffeshop is located now.
Overall, this block still is an example of manifold block development of Almaty - older condos adjoin newer ones and classsical soviet post-modernist administrative buildings.
