“DON’T Visit QOM” Iran’s Second Most Religious City
Day 111. 60km (63798kms)
A sweaty but manageable night in the tent. I woke with the sunrise so was up and on my way by 07:30, the temperature at this time absolutely fine for cycling.
A truck stop midway fuelled me with a huge plate of eggs and bread for less than a dollar. They also offered to fill my bottles and sent my off with an additional 1.5 litre ice brick. I arrived.
Qom is Iran’s second holiest city on account of Hazurat-e-Masumeh the shrine to Imam Reza’s sister Fatemeh. Because it’s such a deeply religious place some people had expressed concerns about my visiting, and certainly it could feel like an intimidating place. On the streets you can see many clerics in robes and almost every woman wears a chador. The air is heavy with the smell of Sohan, Qom’s signature saffron brittle, like an extremely fancy and delicious Dime Bar.
And so I gratefully accepted the invitation I had received last night at the mosque. Thanks to my guides and with a loaned chador I was able to visit the city accompanied by my hosts who smoothed the way for me to enter otherwise restricted sites. And so my presence was even more of a novelty than usual in Iran. After the event my guide relayed a conversation he’d had with a mullah who’d flatly refused to accept I had cycled here; “It’s not possible”.
The shrine is indeed magnificent, mirrored, and moving. But on top of this we also visited the bazaar, carpet workshops, and a local restaurant. I feel exceptionally grateful to have had the opportunity to learn about life in Qom in this way.

The Great Mosque of Kufa (Arabic: مَسْجِد ٱلْكُوفَة ٱلْمُعَظَّم/ٱلْأَعْظَم, : Masjid al-Muʿaẓẓam/al-ʾAʿaẓam), or Masjid al-Kufa, is located in Kufa, Iraq and is one of the earliest and holiest surviving mosques in the world. The mosque, built in the 7th century, was home to Ali ibn Abi Talib, the 4th Rashidun caliph; and contains the holy shrine of Muslim ibn Aqeel, his companion Hani ibn Urwa; and the revolutionary, Al-Mukhtar. In recent history, the mosque has seen numerous renovations by Dawoodi Bohra.

Conclusion: How to Prepare for War as a Civilian
1st Phase: How to Prepare Financially for War
Withdraw from your account a substantial amount of money. Enough to last a few months. Bank runs and cash shortages are common before wars.
If your country is directly involved, avoid keeping local currency. Swap it for the currency of a neutral country.
Convert hard-to-carry assets into mobile assets like gold, that you can easily carry or hide.
2nd Phase: What to do if war is imminent.
Prepare an emergency wallet with your documents, cash, passport, and keys.
Study the fastest possible flight and train schedules, as well as the quickest routes to the border, in the event that air travel and railways are disrupted.
If you are a foreigner, like me, contact your embassy and ask about their contingency plans for the outbreak of war.
Carry ALL documents proving ownership of vehicles, land, houses, assets, and so on. This includes fiscal receipts, notarized acts, and transfer notes.
Nominate trustworthy people in another country to be your children’s guardians, to protect them if the worst happens. Include them in your life insurance policy.
3rd Phase: What to Do During a War (as a refugee)
Modern wars are not quick, taking years or even decades during their guerrilla phase. Therefore, try to settle in and adapt from the very beginning.
Contact assistance from institutions like the Red Cross, Caritas, or UNHCR.
Be courteous to those who are receiving you. If you feel homesick, take a look at this article about how to deal with it.
Try to find a job or a source of income. Do not expect to live up to your previous living standards, at least not at first.
4th Phase: What to Do After the War
Use the documents you kept all this time to demand war reparations from the invader.
