The Macedonian Language

Macedonian Language

In this language episode, world traveler David Hoffmann sits down with Kate in the city of Bitola to show us what the Macedonian language sounds like. For those of you who don’t know about Macedonian, it is a South Slavic language spoken by about 2 million people. If you’re thinking it sounds similar to Bulgarian you’re right. Bulgarian is its closest dialect. Here, Kate and David go over some common words in English then in Macedonian to give you a taste for what it sounds like. If you’re headed to Macedonia, we encourage you to learn some of these frequently spoken words to help you meet new people and show them you’ve made the effort to learn some of the local words (although you’ll find that there are many English speakers throughout the country). We hope you enjoy this intro to the Macedonian language. Special thanks to Kate for participating in the video and to our sponsors, XShot and Macedonia Timeless. Vi blagodarime za glendanje!

Top Macedonia Tourist Attraction | Tikves Winery

Tikveš (Macedonian: Тиквеш) is a plain situated in central Republic of Macedonia which is known for an artificial lake. It is home to the towns of Kavadarci and Negotino. Famous for its wine, Tikveš is the center of the Macedonian wine production which has been cultivated for more than 120 years. The region is also very famous f

Wine industry
A large fertile plain of about 2,000 square kilometers makes up the Tikveš district (part of Povardarie region), located in central Macedonia and enclosed by mountain highlands on three sides. It consists of gentle undulating hills at an average of 300 meters above sea-level. Its climate is characterized by long, hot summers and mild and rainy sub-mediterranean winters with an average of 460 mm of rainfall each year. Spring is shorter, some say fresher here and autumn is a bit longer and warmer.

Its altitude varies between 110 and 650 meters. The Vardar River, the country’s principal river, cuts the valley into western and eastern sections. These two sections are very different in their relief, climate, surface waters, soil quality and flora and fauna. The valley’s eastern section is arid and sparsely populated, while the western section is fertile and, compared to that of the east, much more densely populated. This area is also rich in forests, minerals and pastureland and resembles an oasis with a virtual Valhalla of vineyards and orchards.

District's wine growing characteristics
average sum of active temperatures during vegetation 42.84°C
absolute maximum temperature 44.8°C
absolute minimum temperature -23.2°C
average air temperature during the vegetation period 19.3°C
average late spring frosts occur to 23.03, early autumn frosts from 04.11
average rainfall per year 483 mm
average rainfall in the period of vegetation 262 mm
sum of sunny hours during vegetation 1750.8
Varieties
As a result of a harmonious climatic and geographic convergence, the Tikveš region is a perfect place for the cultivation of wine (which is locally popular). The region has produced wine for over 2,500 years.

Today, there are predominantly 20 different grape varieties grown in the Tikveš region. The local Smederevka, Vranec and Temjanika comprise 80% of the total grape production. As wine consumers' preferences change globally, the region keep paces with current trends and adjusts its vine varieties accordingly.

Ancient Town of Stobi, Macedonia

Ancient Town of Stobi, Macedonia

►Read the blog:

While exploring Macedonia, David makes a stop at the ancient city of Stobi to check out the ruins, mosaics, and history behind this fascinating archaeological site. Ancient Stobi is one of the most significant historical finds in Macedonia because of how many eras are represented here… Stobi was first founded by the Kingdom of Paeonia in the 7th century, then eventually overtaken by the Kingdom of Macedon, and later on by the Romans and Byzantines.

Stobi’s importance stems from its strategic position along an old Roman trading route – a road that led from the Danube River (Serbia) all the way down to the Aegean Sea (Greece). Because Stobi was located along this road, it became an important trading hub. The presence of basilicas and religious mosaics demonstrate that the ancient city of Stobi was an early Christian city. There is perhaps no stronger evidence of this than in the baptisterium. Other ruins to see include the Roman theatre and Roman forum.

The Ancient city of Stobi is open daily 10 am to 3 pm. Admission is 120 Macedonian Denar.

Travel to Macedonia, the hidden gem of Balkans - Sep '09

Here are some photos from my trip to Macedonia illustrated by Macedonian folk music. Enjoy!
With absolutely pastoral landscapes, beautiful Byzantine churches, delicious paprika & tomatoes and kind people, Macedonia is a land of plenty. It's unbelievable how many places are worth seeing in this little country. Still largely unexplored ... for how long?

One day in Veles 🇲🇰 NORTH MACEDONIA

One day in Veles! 🇲🇰

Veles is a city in the central part of North Macedonia on the Vardar river. The city of Veles is the seat of Veles Municipality. Veles is the sixth largest Macedonian city with a total population of 43,716 (census 2002). The largest cities in the proximity of Veles are: Skopje - the capital and the largest city of North Macedonia - 54 km in the northwest direction, Štip 43 km to the east, Sveti Nikole 34 km to the northeast, Prilep 79 km in the southwest direction, and Kavadarci and Negotino 43 km and 40 km respectively to the southeast. Veles is on the crossroad of important international road and rail lines. For all these reasons, Veles is considered to have a good geolocation within North Macedonia.

What to see in one day in Veles?

•Saints Cyril and Methodius — a cathedral church in the center of Veles, part of the Povardar Diocese of the Macedonian Orthodox Church.

•Memorial ossuaries represent monumental objects with symbolic content as a special type of chapels (tombs). Relics of fighters who were victims of certain military actions are attached to them. According to their structure, they unite the formal and shape experiences of church construction enriched with aesthetic and spatial qualities. These grandiose silhouettes are correlated with contemporary, fine and monumental architecture and art. In Macedonia, they started construction in the period between the two world wars, but especially they will experience their affirmation after the end of the Second World War.

•Mladinski Park is located in the city of Veles, North Macedonia. It is a popular park frequented by residents and visitors of all ages. The park offers a vast green area with large lawns, trees, flowers and walking paths. There are also several areas equipped with benches where you can sit and relax. Many people come here to picnic, play frisbee or do sports activities such as football or basketball. Mladinski Park also has several recreational facilities, such as a children's playground with slides, swings and climbing frames. There is also a small lake where you can rent rowboats for a fun experience on the water. During the summer, the park often hosts outdoor events and concerts, which attract many people. It is a popular place to spend time outdoors and enjoy nature in the city of Veles.

•Gemidzii Bridge is an iconic attraction located in the city of Veles, North Macedonia. It is one of the symbols of Veles and plays an important role in the history and identity of the city. Gemidzii Bridge is a stone bridge that crosses the Vardar River in the central part of Veles. It was built in 1824 and was named after the Gemidzii family, one of the most influential families in Veles at the time of its construction. The bridge features elegant Ottoman-style architecture, with an arched shape and charming design. There are small water wells along the bridge, which were used in the past to provide water to visitors and traders who crossed the bridge. The Gemidzii Bridge is considered a cultural heritage and a landmark of the city. It is a popular destination for tourists who want to admire the historic architecture and enjoy the panoramic view of the Vardar River.

Twelfth Century Church of St. Panteleimon, Macedonia

The small Twelfth Century Byzantine Church of St. Panteleimon, patron saint of physicians, was constructed in 1164 (and rebuit, and destroyed, and rebuilt - unfortunately like most churches in Macedonia). As guide Goran stated in the beginning of this tour, If you have no interest in churches, Macedonia is not the place for you. Well... Churches do start to bore until a tidbit of information turns the tide. Oh, all right, two tidbits of information.

1. Fresco images here show EXPRESSION on their faces and realistic touches. Before this time, faces were always painted straight on without expression; and

2. The Church's stucco decoration is depicted on the reverse of a Macedonian 50 Denar banknote.

Feel free to skim through the video since I am the first to confess nodding off during church explanations. Steve and I light candles, look and leave...

A little about us...

We’re Lucy and Ben, two photographers from Cornwall, UK who’ve been living and travelling in our self-converted LDV Convoy camper van for the best part of four years. We’ve travelled all across Europe from West to East documenting our encounters with the people we meet as well as our own travels and adventures. We embrace the ethos of slow travel and minimal living, generally spending between 2 and 8 weeks in each country, getting to know each culture, cuisine and people as though we were locals ourselves as well as hiking, wild swimming and camping as we go.

We are currently on our third 7 month long road trip, travelling through the Balkans for the second time beginning in the French Alps and venturing as far East as Turkey, visiting 13 countries in between.

Our plan was simple: visit every country in Europe in our rusty tin can of a van. So far we’ve made it to 28 countries, travelling as far West as Portugal and as far East as Ukraine, having all sorts of crazy adventures in between.

Our main motivation for our travels is to capture photos and create documentary projects, so our van is primarily a vessel for our photography. We tend to focus on topics such as nomadism, traditional ways of life, the effects of recent political events and the difficulties of living in remote rural areas as well as documenting our own adventures and lifestyle on our various social channels.

We’ve had so many memorable experiences on our travels, and our photo documentary projects have given us an intimate insight into the lives of many different people and brought us together as friends.

We've visited the folk living in one of the most remote corners of Europe in the Albanian Alps, experienced the culture and traditions of the horsemen in the Hortóbagy National Park, and experienced life with Roma gypsies in their village in Romania, and there's still so much more to explore...
