Buona visione!❤

MAP OF SKOPJE
Skopje , Macedonian: Скопје ; Albanian: Shkup) is the capital and largest city of North Macedonia. It is the country's political, cultural, economic, and academic centre.
The territory of Skopje has been inhabited since at least 4000 BC; remains of Neolithic settlements have been found within the old Kale Fortress that overlooks the modern city centre. Originally a Paeonian city, Scupi became the capital of Dardania in the second century BC. On the eve of the 1st century AD, the settlement was seized by the Romans and became a military camp. When the Roman Empire was divided into eastern and western halves in 395 AD, Scupi came under Byzantine rule from Constantinople. During much of the early medieval period, the town was contested between the Byzantines and the Bulgarian Empire, whose capital it was between 972 and 992.
From 1282, the town was part of the Serbian Empire, and acted as its capital city from 1346 to 1371. In 1392, Skopje was conquered by the Ottoman Turks, who called it Üsküb (اسکوب). The town stayed under Ottoman control for over 500 years, serving as the capital of the pashasanjak of Üsküp and later the Vilayet of Kosovo. In 1912, it was annexed by the Kingdom of Serbia during the Balkan Wars.[7] During the First World War the city was seized by the Kingdom of Bulgaria, and, after the war, it became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Yugoslavia as the capital of Vardarska Banovina. In the Second World War the city was again captured by Bulgaria and in 1945 became the capital of SR Macedonia, a federated state within the Yugoslavia. The city developed rapidly, but this was interrupted in 1963 when it was hit by a disastrous earthquake.
Skopje is on the upper course of the Vardar River, and is on a major north–south Balkan route between Belgrade and Athens. It is a centre for metal-processing, chemical, timber, textile, leather, and printing industries. Industrial development of the city has been accompanied by development of the trade, logistics, and banking sectors, as well as an emphasis on the fields of transportation, culture and sport. According to the last official census from 2021, Skopje had a population of 422,540 inhabitants in its urban area and 526,502 in ten municipalities that form the city and, beside Skopje, include many other less urbanized and rural settlements some of which are 20 km (12 mi) away from the city itself or even border the neighbouring Kosovo. Skopje was first divided into administrative units in 1945, but the first municipalities were created in 1976. They were five: Centar, Čair, Karpoš, Gazi Baba and Kisela Voda. After the independence of the Republic of Macedonia, power was centralized and municipalities lost much of their competences. A 1996 law restored them and created two new municipalities: Ǵorče Petrov and Šuto Orizari. After the insurgency between Albanian rebels and Macedonian forces in 2001, a new law was enacted in 2004 to incorporate Saraj Municipality into the City of Skopje. Saraj is mostly populated by Albanians and, since then, Albanians represent more than 20% of the city population. Thus Albanian became the second official language of the city administration, something which was one of the claims of the Albanian rebels. The same year, Aerodrom Municipality separated itself from Kisela Voda, and Butel Municipality from Čair.
Municipalities are administered by a council of 23 members elected every four years. They also have a mayor and several departments (education, culture, finances...). The mayor primarily deals with these departments.

Šuto Orizari As the capital and largest city of North Macedonia, Skopje has many major sporting facilities. The city has three large swimming pools, two of which feature Olympic pools. These pools are particularly relevant to coaching water polo teams. Skopje also boasts many football stadiums, like Ilinden in Čair and Železarnica, which can accommodate between 4,000 and 4,500 spectators. The basketball court Kale can accommodate 2,200 people and the court of Jane Sandanski has a 6,000 seat capacity.
The Toše Proeski Arena
The largest stadium remains Toše Proeski Arena. The stadium, built in 1947 and named until 2008, City Stadium Skopje experienced a total renovation, begun in 2009 to meet the standards of FIFA. Fully renovated the stadium contains 33,460 seats, and a health spa and fitness area. The Boris Trajkovski Sports Center is the largest sports complex in the country. It was opened in 2008 and named after former president Boris Trajkovski, who died in 2004. It includes rooms dedicated to handball, basketball and volleyball and host 6,250 seats, a bowling alley, a fitness area and an ice hockey court. Its main hall, which regularly hosts concerts, holds around 10,000 people.

Meeting Macedonians on a Beautiful Skopje Day(2021)
DON'T FORGET TO TURN ON ENGLISH SUBTITLES! :)
TÜRKÇE ALTYAZIYI AÇMAYI UNUTMAYIN!
-ENGLISH-
On a sunny Sunday, I'm in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia.
I want to have spontaneous conversations with the people in the country so that I can get to know Macedonian culture and socialize with the locals.
For this, my Macedonian friend Stefan and I come to the park in the city center, where the locals conjugate on the weekend.
The country declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 under the name Republic of Macedonia. It was recognized by the United Nations in 1993. The Macedonian and Greek governments reached an agreement to change the name of the country to North Macedonia on 12 June 2018.
Lots of love to you all :)
Thanks for being here on my journey.

OLD TOWN | Skopje, North Macedonia | Tour July 2022
If you cross Stone Bridge (one of the oldest structures in the city), going from Square Macedonia you will arrive at the OLD TOWN.
The Old Bazaar, as part of the OLD TOWN, is one of the oldest and largest markets in the Balkans since the 12th century. Here you can find a wide variety of traditional craftwork, fashion, furniture shops, and much jewelry, and restaurants. You can really see the Turkish (Ottoman) heritage around. Bit Pazar is also part of the Old Bazar. It's mainly an open market where you can find fresh goods like vegetables, fruits, meat, milk products e.t.c.
“Kale Fortress” was built in the 6th century A.C., most probably by the Roman Emperor Justinian 1st. Since then it has been destroyed and reconstructed multiple times.
Here are the rest of the structures you'll find there:
- Bezisten
- Clock Tower
- Cifte Hamam
- Ishak Baey Mosque
- Kapan Han
- Kurshumli Han
- Mustafa Pasha Mosque
- Church of the Holy Salvation
- Suli Han
- Sultan Murat Mosque

Exploring SKOPJE in MACEDONIA 🇲🇰 Old City, Old Bazaar, and MACEDONIAN FOOD!!!
What a great capital to explore Skopje turned out to be!
Upon waking up I decided to take an early walk to surprise Paige with coffee and a traditional Macedonian breakfast of donuts! 0:08
After breakfast we decided to walk along the promenade and take in the beautiful architecture on both the buildings and the bridges! We also found a restaurant on the river which was in the shape of a boat, which the locals told me was a front for something else—if you know anything about this please leave a comment below! 0:38
We continued from there to the old city which seems to be the Muslim quarter of Skopje. This was by far the most crowded area in all of Skopje, particularly the Bazaar. The Bazaar was something we stumbled on and did not see it in any of the travel guides as a place to visit, however it was a great find! 2:01
From there we went to a restaurant called “Old City House” which was a recommendation. Once again, Macedonian Baked Beans were on the menu, and also on the table in front of us. 4:36
While we were at lunch, it started pouring rain, so we waited a bit for the bus of the storm to bypass before we headed to the Skopje City Mall, just to have something to do inside and not get wet. 5:22
When we left the mall, we walked nearly three miles back to the apartment, and had dinner in a recommended Mexican Restaurant called “Amigos.” 7:00
Tomorrow we leave Macedonia and head onward to Kosovo! Don’t forget to check that video when it’s posted!
When we decided to take a month to travel, there were few options for Americans due to the current health situation. Macedonia was one of those options, and as my research continued, I stumbled upon Skopje on nearly every list of places to see in Macedonia as a highlight of the country, of course because it's the capital!
This is part nine in a series that started with flying from London, so if you missed part one, two, three, four, five, six, seven or eight, be sure to check them out! And as always, thank you for watching!!!

A Gypsy Poet's Quest to Document the Romani Language (Shutka, Macedonia)
The so-called Gypsies, or Roma people, can lay claim to what might be the most well traveled oral tradition on the planet. But rarely has their rich language been preserved on paper. Enter Roma poet Muzafer Bislim, who has spent nearly 40 years committing it to paper. The project, not an entirely scientific one, began during his travels through Eastern Europe and the former Yugoslav republic in the seventies as a singer-songwriter. He keeps the handwritten results stashed away in his home in Shutka, Macedonia.
