Kollam | Top 5 Tourist Places in Kollam District | Kollam Travel Guide | Kerala | MeeAnveshi

Kollam, formerly known as Quilon, is a district located in the southern region of Kerala, situated 70 km north of the state's capital, Thiruvananthapuram. It is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west, Tamil Nadu to the east, Alapuzha and Pathanamthitta districts to the north, and Thiruvananthapuram district to the south. With a population of over 2.6 million, Kollam is one of the more densely populated districts in India. The district's capital is Kollam City, which serves as the headquarters for the district administration. Administratively, the district is divided into two revenue divisions, namely Kollam and Punalur, each with three taluks under them.

Similar to the rest of Kerala, Kollam experiences a temperate climate with generally sunny weather peaking in heat during April-May. The monsoon season falls from June to September. The soil in Kollam varies from loamy to laterite and forest in the coastal regions, mainland, and forest areas, respectively.

The heartland of Kollam is naturally veined by the Ashtamudi Lake, a massive, multi-branched water body that is also a popular boating attraction for tourists. This, along with the Kollam canal cutting through the city, gives Kollam a prominent place in the waterway systems of the country. The vast expanse of the lake is beautifully spotted with a number of islands of varying sizes. The city is also graced by beaches where people go to spend quiet evenings. Kollam has a considerably large forest cover on its eastern side, making it home to several eco-tourism projects such as Shenduruni, Thenmala, Palaruvi, etc.

Kollam City prides itself on its extensive history of political, commercial, and cultural significance, as evidenced by numerous accounts from ancient travelers. With a diverse colonial past under the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, Kollam is home to several historically significant sites such as the Thangasseri lighthouse, the St. Thomas Fort and cemetery constructed by the Portuguese, Thevally Palace, and Cheenakkottaram. Additionally, the city boasts numerous old buildings, constructed in various architectural styles by the Travancore kings, who ruled the region prior to India's independence. Many government offices still operate within these structures.

Since the 16th century, Kollam has served as the hub of the cashew industry in Kerala. With hundreds of operational cashew factories in the district, Kollam remains the largest exporter of processed cashews in India. The presence of Neendakara and Thangasseri, two fishing harbors and ports in Kollam, has fostered a thriving marine industry that provides ample employment and livelihood opportunities for a significant number of individuals.

Top 10 Places to Visit in Kerala, India

Kerala, a state on India's tropical Malabar Coast, has nearly 600km of Arabian Sea shoreline. It's known for its palm-lined beaches and backwaters, a network of canals. Inland are the Western Ghats, mountains whose slopes support tea, coffee, and spice plantations as well as wildlife. National parks like Eravikulam and Periyar, plus Wayanad and other sanctuaries, are home to elephants, langur monkeys, and tigers.

VARKALA: A seaside resort town that boasts a wide beach with beautiful cliffs and a seaside promenade. Also check out the 2,000-year-old Janardanaswamy Temple and look for a temple festival—I found one at Kuttikkattil Bhadrakali Devi Temple. For street food, look for tata dosas, chicken thoran, and puttu!

ALLEPPEY: A coastal farming city and the gateway to the Kerala Backwaters. Try the curries and puttu at Brothers Hotel and the southern Indian seafood at New York Toddy Shop. Book a houseboat stay so you can explore the world-famous backwaters and the towns, villages, and sites along them.

THEKKADY: An area of the Idukki District that borders the state of Tamil Nadu. Check out the wildlife at Periyar Tiger Reserve and the artforms called Kathakali and Kalari. Dine at Drizzle in the Woodnote Thekkady resort and enjoy a meal with the Mannan tribe in the nearby forested mountains!

MUNNAR: A hill station that’s known for its breathtaking scenery, beautiful tea plantations, and stunning mountain vistas. Stay at the Dreamcatcher Resort and enjoy a meal in the mountains. Don’t forget to explore the town and try street food there! Witness the sunrise above Kolukkumalai Tea Plantation and tour the facility afterward!

KOCHI: An ancient city along Kerala’s Arabian Sea coast. Check out its history at Fort Kochi, St. Francis Church, and the oldest Jewish synagogue in the commonwealth. Sightsee in the Jewish quarters and don’t forget to buy souvenirs and try the amazing food!

WAYANAD : Wayanad is a rural district in Kerala state, southwest India. In the east, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a lush, forested region with areas of high altitude, home to animals including Asiatic elephants, tigers, leopards and egrets. In the Ambukuthi Hills to the south, Edakkal Caves contain ancient petroglyphs, some dating back to the Neolithic age

IDUKKI : Idukki district is a densely forested, mountainous region in the south Indian state of Kerala. In the north, Anamudi mountain towers over Eravikulam National Park, where the rare, blue Neelakurinji flower blooms every 12 years. Nearby, Munnar is a hill station known for its sprawling tea plantations and Tea Museum. Farther south is the vast, curved Idukki Dam and Periyar National Park, a tiger and elephant reserve

Muzhappilangad : Muzhappilangad Beach is famous for being Kerala's only drive-in beach. At about 7km from Thalassery in Kannur, you have a 4 km stretch of sand that awaits you to simply drive along as you soak in the view of the beautiful Malabar Coast. Along the way, one gets to munch on delicacies from a number of shacks that offer authentic Malabar cuisine
