Veracruz City Highlights Tour - MEXICO w/Mike Vondruska - Travel Guide
In this episode, I take a short walking highlights tour in the city of Veracruz in Mexico.
The city of Veracruz is located on the Gulf of Mexico 250 miles east of Mexico City. Veracruz city has been called the Gateway to Mexico because of its deep water port. Cargo ships have docked here ever since the Spanish conquered Mexico in the early 1500's.
When visiting the city of Veracruz, be prepared to speak Spanish because very few people there speak English. Also, exchange your foreign currency for Mexican Pesos. Almost everywhere US dollars will not be accepted.
Here are some of the Highlights you will see during this quick walking tour:
- Plaza de Armas (the main central plaza)
- Malecon (the prominade near the ocean)
- Cafe de la Parroquia
- San Juan de Ulua fortress
- El Baluarte de Santiago (another fort which was a part of the walled city which at one time surrounded Veracruz for protection)

Veracruz, an elongated Mexican state bordering the Gulf of Mexico, is home to numerous beaches as well as the country’s highest peak, Pico de Orizaba, a dormant volcano. The modern port city of Veracruz was founded by Hernán Cortés in 1519 as a base for Spain’s conquest of the Aztec Empire. Today the city is famous for its exuberant annual Carnival festival.
Veracruz is a coastal state in Central Mexico. It has a developing tourism sector, with many ruins, colonial historical sites, natural features ranging from a towering Pico Orizaba-the highest point in Mexico-to low-lying lagoons and bio-reserves, and fairly decent beaches.

Driving down a Beach in Veracruz, Mexico
Driving on the beach as the high tide is coming in can be tricky. This is tricky especially when the waves start reaching the sand dunes along the shoreline. In the seaside town of Playa Chachalacas, this happens. in
We were driving down the beach in a 4x4 Suburban which is taller than most vehicles because of its higher frame and bigger tires.
You can experience this beach ride on ATVs as a part of my 10 day tour called, Outdoor Adventures in Veracruz - 10 Day Action Tour.

Montepio, Veracruz: A Relaxing Laidback Beach Experience - MEXICO w/Mike Vondruska - Travel Clip
Mike Vondruska is our Director of Tour Operations. He claims that this is his favorite beach in the state of Veracruz in Mexico. It is located in the small seaside village of Montepio in the south part of the state. It is inconveniently located so those who do venture there will not find many (if any) foreigners hanging out.
Plus, at the time I made this video (2018), there was no reliable internet or cell service. So that made it even more attractive ... no distractions from the outside world.
