Places to see in ( Barcelona - Spain ) L'Eixample District

Places to see in ( Barcelona - Spain ) L'Eixample District

The Eixample is a district of Barcelona between the old city and what were once surrounding small towns, constructed in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its population was 262,000 at the last census.

The Eixample is characterized by long straight streets, a strict grid pattern crossed by wide avenues, and square blocks with chamfered corners (named illes in Catalan, manzanas in Spanish). This was a visionary, pioneering design by Ildefons Cerdà, who considered traffic and transport along with sunlight and ventilation in coming up with his characteristic octagonal blocks, where the streets broaden at every intersection making for greater visibility, better ventilation and (today) some short-stay parking space. The grid pattern remains as a hallmark of Barcelona, but many of his other provisions were ignored: the four sides of the blocks and the inner space were built instead of the planned two or three sides around a garden; the streets were narrower; only one of the two diagonal avenues was carried out; the inhabitants were of a higher class than the mixed composition dreamed of by Cerdà.

Some parts of the Eixample were influenced by Modernista architects, chief among whom was Antoni Gaudí. His work in the Eixample includes the Casa Milà (nicknamed La Pedrera) and the Casa Batlló, both of which are on the wide Passeig de Gràcia, as well as the Sagrada Família. Other architects who made highly significant, and certainly more numerous, contributions to giving the Eixample its characteristic appearance include Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Domènech i Estapà, Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas and perhaps above all Enric Sagnier i Villavecchia, responsible for a total of over 500 buildings in the city (not all of them in the Eixample).

The Casa Terrades, better known as Casa de les Punxes, is replete with Mediaeval allusions that stands at the junction of Av. Diagonal with Carrer Rosselló. It was built in 1903–1905 by the Modernista architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, who used Nordic Gothic and Spanish Plateresque resources side by side, along with traditional Catalan motifs.

The Casa Batlló is part of a block called the Illa de la Discòrdia, along with two other notable Modernista works, Lluís Domènech i Montaner's Casa Lleó Morera and Josep Puig i Cadafalch's Casa Amatller. The block is so named due to the visual clash between the buildings; its Spanish name, Manzana de la Discordia, is also a pun on Eris's Apple of Discord - manzana means both apple and city block.

There are six administrative neighborhoods:

L'Antiga Esquerra de l'Eixample
La Nova Esquerra de l'Eixample
Dreta de l'Eixample
Fort Pienc
Sagrada Família
Sant Antoni

Walking in Barcelona: Barrio Gótico to La Catedral de Barcelona in Spain ????????, 4K, tourism, travel

Walking in Barcelona, Spain ????????: Barrio Gótico, 4K tourism, travel, summer
The Gothic Quarter (Catalan: Barri Gòtic or El Gòtic, Spanish: Barrio Gótico) is the historic centre of the old city of Barcelona. It stretches from La Rambla to Via Laietana, and from the Mediterranean seafront to the Ronda de Sant Pere. It is a part of Ciutat Vella district.
The quarter encompasses the oldest parts of the city of Barcelona, and includes the remains of the city's Roman wall and several notable medieval landmarks. Much of the present-day fabric of the quarter, however, dates to the 19th and early 20th centuries. El Call, the medieval Jewish quarter, is located within this area, along with the former Sinagoga Major.
The Barri Gòtic retains a labyrinthine street plan, with many small streets opening out into squares. Most of the quarter is closed to regular traffic although open to service vehicles and taxis.

A Walk Around The Gothic Quarter of Barcelona

The Gothic Quarter is the centre of the old city of Barcelona. It stretches from La Rambla to Via Laietana, and from the Mediterranean seafront to Ronda de Sant Pere. It is a part of Ciutat Vella district.

The quarter was built primarily in the late 19th and early 20th century, though several buildings date from medieval times. Remains of the squared Roman Wall can be seen around Tapineria and Sots-Tinent Navarro to the north, Avinguda de la Catedral and Plaça Nova to the west and Carrer de la Palla to the south. El Call, the medieval Jewish quarter, is located within this area too.

The Barri Gòtic retains a labyrinthine street plan, with many small streets opening out into squares. Most of the quarter is closed to regular traffic although open to service vehicles and taxis.

Walking in Barcelona, Part 1: Eixample District: Carrer del Comte d'Urgell, 4K #barcelona

Carrer del Comte d'Urgel is the dividing line between the subdistricts L'Antiga Esquerra de l'Eixample and La Nova Esquerra de l'Eixample which are both part of the greater Eixample District!
The Eixample district not only is the most iconic in Barcelona, it's also the most diverse in terms of things to do in Barcelona. Most of the famous Gaudí buildings like the Sagrada Familia or Casa Batlló are located at this district.
The gridlike layout is the symbol of the sunny and modern Barcelona we know today.

Antiga Esquerra is one of the liveliest neighborhoods of the Eixample. If you're looking for great, cozy spots to have drinks or dinner, head over to Enric Granados street.
On the other hand, streets like Aribau, Casanova and Muntaner and Plaça Universitat concentrate most of the bars and clubs. This area is also know as the Gaixample.
Although not an official neighborhood, an area of this district (located between Gran Vía, Balmes and Aragó streets), has become a magnet for g*y tourism in Barcelona, resulting in the rise of several G*y friendly Hotels and a very extense offer of g*y clubs and bars.
Over the past two decades, the zone has seen the arrival of g*y shops, restaurants and nightclubs. Even so, the zone remains a multicultural and yet traditional neighborhood.

The Nova Esquerra neighborhood is located to the southwest of the Eixample district, limiting with Plaza España and Arenas shopping center.
It's a recommended place to stay in Barcelona if you're arriving by train or if you plan on doing sightseeing near Barcelona. Sants station, the largest train station in the city is located within this neighborhood.
