The Salt Cathedral in Zipaquira ( is the first wonder of Colombia ( and is considered one of the most notable architectural and artistic achievements of architecture in Colombia, so it bears the title of architectonic jewel of modernity.
The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira is located in 29 kilometers of Bogotá and can be reached by the Train of La Sabana ( The entrance fee to the Salth Cathedral for adults is 57,000 Colombian pesos (17 dollars) and for children between 4 and 12 years and people with disabilities is 47,000 Colombian pesos (14 dollars).
Although the Cathedral is the main attraction, it is part of the Parque de la Sal Zipaquirá, a tourist space that allows visitors to learn about mining in Colombia and also about salt as an artistic resource. In the Salt Cathedral you can travel viacrucis stations under the effect of colored lights and, in addition, a 3D film about salt extraction in Colombia is presented.
The exploitation of this mine has a history that goes through pre-Columbian times and goes through colonial times and continues to make history today. It was the former Muiscas indigenous people who first benefited from this huge salt deposit, which is now one of Colombia's main tourist destinations.

A Walk Through The Underground Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá in 4K

Please enjoy our video about the Salt Cathedral. For more videos from Travel Life Experiences, you can find us on You tube:
For more about Colombia, you can find tips, information, videos and pictures at Website:

What is the Salt Cathedral?

We take you for a walk through the underground Salt Cathedral in Zipaquirá. This area of the country is rich in salt mines active since the 5th century B.C., and Colombia at the time was one of the most sought-after countries for the valuable natural resource of salt. This video is our first time shooting video in 4K, and it was a spectacular place to shoot.

The cathedral is pretty darn impressive. There are only two cathedrals of its kind in the world (the other is in Poland), and it's built 200m underground. Not only is it considered one of Colombia's paramount artistic and architectural accomplishments, but it was also honoured with the number 1 of the seven wonders of Colombia.

Essentially, it's an underground church built in a tunnel of a salt mine in the Halite Mountains. Originally constructed in 1954, significant structural problems lead to its closure and then it reopened after Bogotán architect Roswell Garavito Pearl and Bogotan engineer Jorge Enrique Castelblanco Reyes were awarded the job, and it reopened in 1995.

The walk down the tunnel is a series of interlinked rooms and chambers including 14 small chapels, and three large shrines and the impressive large cathedral that can hold up to 8400 people. Throughout the tunnel rests beautiful salt and marble sculptures all marvellously lit with blue and purple lighting.

What You Need to Know about the Salt Cathedral Tour:

A tour here lasts about an hour; it is a little cool down there, so bring sleeves and comfortable shoes. Normally, I am a little claustrophobic, yet I had no concern wandering through the surprisingly large tunnel, especially the impressively large cathedral at the end.

How to get to the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá:

Zipaquirá (the town where the cathedral resides) is approximately an hour outside of Bogotá (50kms), and you can easily get there by bus, private car or steam train tour. Tour operators like Destino Bogotá offer guided trips to Zipaquirá by steam train or private car from your hotel in Bogotá.

How to make your trip more meaningful

Spend some time in Zipaquirá, it's a charming colonial town, and to get more of the local flavour avoid the large western style restaurants that reside along the highway entering the town, and explore the town streets for restaurants and shops.

It is open Sunday-to-Sunday 9am-6pm. It is quite crowded on Sundays where locals and Bogotán's come to worship (although an interesting time to see the cathedral in all its glory), or you can wander through it a little more on another day by avoiding the large crowds.

Amazing Salt Cathedral & Zipaquirá City! Colombia

In this video, we show you around the city of Zipaquirá and one of the Seven Wonders of Colombia - The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá (Catedral de Sal). It’s a magnificent Roman Catholic Church carved entirely from salt. Situated close to Bogota, this is a must-see attraction you cannot miss!

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá Colombia Travel Vlog ????????

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá Colombia Travel Vlog ????????

Join me as I venture into the deep, dark depths of Catedral de Sal, The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, Colombia.

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá (Spanish: Catedral de Sal de Zipaquirá) is an underground Roman Catholic church built within the tunnels of a salt mine 200 metres (660 ft) underground in a halite mountain near the city of Zipaquirá, in Cundinamarca, Colombia. It is a tourist destination and place of pilgrimage in the country. The temple at the bottom has three sections, representing the birth, life, and death of Jesus. The icons, ornaments and architectural details are hand carved in the halite rock. Some marble sculptures are included. The cathedral is considered one of the most notable achievements of Colombian architecture, being described as a Jewel of Modern Architecture. The cathedral represents a valuable cultural, environmental and religious patrimony for the Colombian people.

The cathedral is a functioning church that receives as many as 3,000 visitors on Sundays, but it has no bishop and therefore no official status as a cathedral in Catholicism.
