Come check out our new travel guide from Leipzig, Germany where we cover 10 things to do in the city including quirky attractions, artsy neighbourhoods and the Leipzig's incredible food scene. Today we’re visiting a really cool city that’s full of contrasts. Leipzig is a place that offers a wonderful mix of lush green spaces with canals, gritty industrial areas that have been given new life, and a beautiful city centre that oozes history.
Over the course of our visit we got to see that Leipzig is a city of many faces, and a few locals even told us the city has earned the nickname 'hype-zig' because it feels like a younger up and coming version of Berlin.
So, with all of that in mind, in this video, we’ll be sharing some of the highlights from our visit. which include a fun food tour featuring everything from German baked goods to Southeast Asian street food. We’ll also show you around our unique accommodations, because yes, we spent the night in a warehouse! Plus, we’ll show you which beer to order next time you find yourself here.

Panorama bis zum Völkerschlachtdenkmal ???? Rathausturmführung in Zeitz
Als ich auf Städtereise in Zeitz bin, besichtige ich das Rathaus und mache gleich auch eine Führung auf den Rathausturm mit. Vom Turm aus siehst du eine andere top Sehenswürdigkeit, wenn auch nur sehr klein: das Völkerschlachtdenkmal von Leipzig.

Im Zentrum von Zeitz, direkt am Altmarkt, steht das spätgotische Rathaus von Zeitz, das um Anfang 1500 zum „Leben“ erwacht. ✔ Mitte 1700 ist Martin Luthers Urenkel Friedrich der erste echte Bürgermeister von Zeitz. Generell leben von viele Nachfahren Luthers in Zeitz. ✔ Zurück zum Rathaus: Du siehst das Wahrzeichen aus fast jeder Ecke der Stadt. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs werden einige Teile beschädigt. Heute siehst du bei deiner Besichtigung Friedenssaal und ehemalige Amtszimmer. ✔
Besonderheit ist allerdings die Führung auf den Rathausturm von Zeitz: Nach rund 200 teilweise blitzblank polierten Stufen erreichst du die Aussichtsplattform in 52 m Höhe. ✔ Die Turmführung lohnt sich, weil du nicht nur einen super Ausblick auf die Zeitzer Altstadt hast, sondern sogar eine Panorama-Aussicht bis zum Leipziger Völkerschlachtdenkmal. ✔ Ehrlicherweise siehst du es aber nur bei perfekter Witterung und nur als ganz kleines Etwas am Horizont. Für die Führungen inkl. Turmaufstieg solltest du etwa 1-2 Stunden einplanen. Außer einem foto-tauglichen Gerät musst du nichts Besonderes beachten bzw. mitnehmen. ✔

Seit einigen Jahren besuche ich immer mal wieder diese Stadt... Zeit, ihr ein Filmchen zu widmen.
In kaum einer anderen ostdeutschen Stadt sind die Folgen der Deindustrialisierung („Strukturwandel Ost“) so geballt sichtbar wie in Zeitz.
Einst stolze Residenz- und Domstadt und mit Beginn der Industrialisierung lebendiger Industriestandort, begann mit der Schließung fast aller Betriebe nach der Wende und dem massiven Beschäftigungsverlust der rasante Niedergang und Verfall. Die Einwohnerzahl halbierte sich, bis heute stehen ganze Straßenzüge leer.
In Abständen berichten Medien (taz, FAZ, Der Spiegel) mit einer Art herablassenden Verwunderung über den Landkreis und die „Ruinenstadt“. Der Deutschlandfunk fragt sich im September 2017, warum niemand „eine 100 Quadratmeter große Gründerzeit- Wohnung zum Kaufpreis vom 8000 Euro“ haben will...
Es gibt in Zeitz auch denkmalpflegerisch hervorragend sanierte Objekte, die Moritzburg lädt zum Besuch ein und unter der Altstadt befindet sich ein sehenswertes Labyrinth von unterirdischen Gängen...
Ich verliere mich trotzdem immer wieder in der Tragik und Schönheit des Verfalls... Den Titel „Am fortgewehten Ort“ habe ich einem Buch der Fotografin Gundula Schulze Eldowy entliehen, deren Werke ich sehr schätze...

More than in any other East German cities, the consequences of deindustrialization (structural change East Germany) are as conspicuously visible as in Zeitz.
Zeitz was once a proud residence and cathedral city, and with the beginning of industrialization a lively industrial location. The closure of almost all enterprises after the German reunification and the massive loss of employment led to a rapid decline and decay. The number of inhabitants halved, until today whole streets are empty.
At intervals German media (taz, FAZ, Der Spiegel) report with a kind of astounding amazement over the county and the ruin city. In September 2017, the German radio “Deutschlandfunk”wonders why nobody wants to have a 100 square meter large restored Wilhelminian apartment for a purchase price of 8000 Euro” ...
In Zeitz there are also monumentally restored objects, Palace “Moritzburg Zeitz” invites to visit and under the old town is a magnificent labyrinth of underground passageways ...
However, I always lose myself in the tragedy and beauty of decay. The title Am fortgewehten Ort, I borrowed by a book by the photographer Gundula Schulze Eldowy. Her photographs reflects for me the kind of indifference I felt during my city tour, passing by blind and battered windows.
