10 Things NOT To Do in Uruguay

Get more Tips here!

What’s not to love about Uruguay? The nation is not only home to an inviting cultural heritage and diverse natural beauty, but it’s routinely praised as South America’s least corrupt and most democratic nation. However, it's always good to remember these 10 Things NOT to do in Uruguay to avoid troubles.

1. Don’t Stay on the Beaches
There’s nothing wrong with spending a few days lounging and enjoying the scenery, but you’ll be remiss if you don’t take the opportunity to travel inland and enjoy all the cultural and natural beauty of the country. It’s absolutely worth exploring.

2. Don’t Drop Your Guard in Montevideo
While the capital city isn’t more dangerous than any other major city throughout the world, it still has its share of crime. When you’re in tourist-heavy locations, it’s a good idea to be on the lookout for pickpockets and small time criminals.

3. Don’t Park Anywhere
Urban areas in Uruguay are known for car break-ins, so it’s best not to leave your rental car unattended on the street. Montevideo has several pay parking options that will provide for the safety of your vehicle throughout your stay.

4. Don’t Be Put Off By the Hello Kiss
Don’t be surprised if you meet someone and find them leaning in to kiss you on the cheek. Men and women alike will greet you in this way, so it’s best just to go with it.

5. Don’t Shop at the Same Store Over and Over
The prices of goods can vary from place to place in Uruguay, so try to explore the area and visit a series of different shops. You might find that some shops have better prices on various items.

6. Don’t Just Wander Into the Ocean
In the Beaches, lifeguard towers often have flags hanging outside. A red flag indicates the most dangerous conditions and means you should probably stick to sunning yourself rather than taking a dip.

7. Don’t Give Money to Street Kids in Montevideo
They might look friendly and charming, but if you hand over a few bucks, you could be feeding addiction. One of the hardest hit segments of the population are young kids who beg on the street to get cash for their next fix.

8. Don’t Go Without Learning Some Spanish
It’s best to learn a few phrases of Spanish to get through most interactions. Most people in Uruguay will be very patient with you, so don’t be nervous about trying the language even if you’re not fluent.

9. Don’t Go at Any Time of the Year
As gorgeous as it is, Uruguay is also home to its fair share of natural disasters, as well. Be sure to watch the weather before you go, and in the event of an emergency, just pay attention to the local authorities.

10. Don’t Leave Home Without Some Cash
The official currency of Uruguay is the Uruguayan peso. The value of 30 pesos is about one American dollar. As a result, most places love doing business with the dollar, and you can often negotiate the price of certain goods.

My experience immigrating to Uruguay | 2 year Update | Expat Diaries

If you're new here, I'm maddie, and 2.5 years ago I moved from Australia to Montevideo Uruguay with my Fiance. We moved here because Alejandro has family here, but we never expected things to be quite so difficult. So living here, as foreigners, with very little support during one of the most dramatic changes in the world (2020) this was my experience!
Of course I could talk about so much more, so if you have any questions please comment and I will reply.

Is it worth visiting Uruguay for just 1 day? Your Ultimate Montevideo Travel Guide!

If you're in Uruguay for just one day, or 24 hours, here is what I would recommend doing.
Of course there are so many more things to see in the country, including Colonia del Sacramento and Punta Del Este, but if you are on a time crunch, then stick to the suburbs of Ciudad Vieja, Parque Rodo, Pocitos and Carrasco, to pack the most into your vacation.
Everything from coffee spots, lunch ideas, museum lists, walking paths and of course, the nightlife. So whether you're coming with your family and kids, or you're young, single, and ready to mingle, there is something here for everyone.

Uruguay Travel Video 2021 HD #Uruguay #Montevideo #NNtravel

República Oriental del Uruguay. The name Uruguay derives from the Guarani language, “River of the Painted Birds.” A land and people contentedly sitting in the wings on the world stage. Progressive, egalitarian, stable and culturally sophisticated. In contrast to Paraguay, Uruguay is the relaxed exploiter of her powerful ambitious neighbours, Brazil and Argentina. Uruguay is considered the safest country in South America and amongst the safest in the world with a GPI ranking of 35, UK GPI 42, USA GPI 121. The first and only Sudamericano country where abortion is legal, same-sex sexual activity has been legal with an equal age of consent since 1934, in addition, a world leader in LGBTIQ rights. The first country in the world to legalise marijuana despite considerable pressure from the USA in the flawed war on drugs policy. 95% of electricity from renewable energy aiming for 100% by 2025. A literacy rate of 99% thanks to the provision of free compulsory education from primary level through to university level. One of the highest staff to patient ratios in the world ensuring a world ranking consistently in the top five for free and subsidised health care through health care plans called mutualistas. Montevideo derived from Portuguese, Monte vide eu, meaning, I see a mountain, historic downtown business/financial district comprising of magnificent art deco and imposing neoclassical buildings jostle for space alongside grimy, worn-out apartment blocks more in keeping with Havana. Beneath grime and murals the numerous apartment blocks with beach frontage and million dollar ocean views are public housing or as the locals say, self contained villages with the best views in Montevideo, they are right. Never judge a book... Punta del Diablo a small fishing village, 1000 delightful locals, vast sand dunes, miles of pristine deserted beaches pounded by the South Atlantic, heaven. Established by the Portugese in 1680, Colonia del Sacramento Barrio Histórico area justifiably designated a World Heritage Site. Atop the 17th century lighthouse Buenos Aires clearly visible across the Río de la Plata the widest river in the world, maximum width 220 kilometres, where the first naval battle of the Second world war occurred. We suspect the yerba-maté sucking, spliff toking, young, self-assured, incredibly kind, vibrant, laid back populous cultivate gliding peacefully under the radar. That being the case, they have this approach mastered. A liberal, egalitarian society, River of the Painted Birds is a gem of a country. And Neil thought Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie originated from a canning factory in Northumberland.

You can have a quality of life hard to afford in Europe or the USA.

In the first of a series on 'Living in Uruguay' Karen A Higgs, CEO of@GuruGuay, talks to a British-born economist about what attracted him to Uruguay to live in the gated communities of Canelones. Alexis discusses the pros and cons of living outside the capital, a typical week living in Uruguay, education for the children and the cost of living. How Safe Is Uruguay for Travel?

Full safety review:

Located between Argentina and Brazil, Uruguay is known as the Switzerland of South America, due to its stable political system and social benefits such as free educational system.

It also has a South Atlantic Ocean coastline.

The name Uruguay means “river of the colorful birds” in Guarani language, spoken by the natives back in the day.

Uruguay is known for many things in Latin America, and it’s getting a lot of attention because of that: for example, it is ranked first in Latin America in peace, democracy and low rate of corruption and is first when it comes to press freedom and the size of the middle class.

Overall Uruguay is very safe, it is the safest country to visit in entire Latin America, and if you plan on exploring the vast spaces of South America, Uruguay is the best place to start. It is economically and politically stable and can offer you an insight into South America without you having to worry about the crime which other South American countries are known for.

Why this solo female traveller chose Uruguay

Check out what this solo female traveller from Chicago who chose to come to Uruguay after reading on a four hour plane ride thought.

Andes 1972 plane crash museum in Montevideo

Andes 1972 museum in Montevideo which honours the survivors and those that died in the Andes plane crash. Yes, one of the greatest survival stories of the 20th century is Uruguayan.

If you visit just one museum while you are in Uruguay, make it the Andes 1972 museum—which tells the true story of Uruguayan endurance, the subject of the films “Society of the Snow” and “Alive!”.

Plan to spend at least two hours. There is so much to take in.

On Friday, October 13, 1972, a Uruguayan Fairchild 227 airplane carrying a rugby team of young men on board crashed in the Andes. This was the beginning of one of the most overwhelming stories of survival in human history.

Initially, 32 people survived the plane crash against one of the world’s highest mountain ranges. Many of the passengers were seriously injured. At almost 4000 metres above sea level, with neither appropriate clothing nor food, surrounded and trapped in the mountains, they were virtually doomed to perish from the extremely low temperatures. Their very limited provisions, consisting of a few sweets, some cans of food and a couple of bottles of alcoholic beverages, quickly ran out. For ten long days they waited to be rescued. Then they heard on the small pocket receiver that the search had been called off.

Museo Andes is a private venture by Jörg Thomsen, a Uruguayan businessman. Huge kudos for all your work over the years.

????Ciudad Vieja (Old City), Rincón 619.

Opening hours: Monday to Friday 10am - 5pm and Saturday 10am - 5pm.
