To start our street food tour in Antakya, Hatay, we went to a local joint for an insanely delicious breakfast.

After breakfast, we went to a local bakery inside the famous Antakya Long Bazaar to have a Hatay specialty snack.
For lunch, we had the famous Tepsi kebab at a local restaurant in the middle of the Bazaar.

After lunch, we went to the meet the legend himself, Hançer Usta, to try his famous fermented carrots juice, Şalgam Suyu.

To continue our insane street food tour in Antakya, Hatay, we walked around the famous Antakya Uzun Çarşı, Antakya Long Bazaar, where we had a few local sweet snacks and also witnessed the making of the kafaif which is used to make the Hatay Künefe.
After that, we headed to a historical shop to try the famous Hatay Künefe and we had the honour of watching the master making it.

After that insane dessert, we continued walking around the Bazaar to check some shops, try some local snacks, and visit the famous Kurşunlu Han.
To end our insane street food tour in Antakya, Hatay, we went to one of the most popular restaurants in town to try traditional, authentic Antakya food.

We have made it to Southern Turkey, and I am instantly obsessed with this place!! It contains everything I love about the world -- amazing hospitality, delicious food, mind-blowing history and beautiful ancient wonders.
My friend Anil and I have been exploring the ins and outs of Antakya and the Hatay province, which reminds me a lot of Syria given it's close proximity.
Some of you guys may remember that about 10 months ago, I spent 2 incredible weeks in Syria -- and considering that the border is just a 1 hour drive away, I had to spontaneously go there and see what I could discover. My curiosity led the way.
It ended up being a really special experience to spend time in the border town of Yayladagi, where I was fascinated at the mix of Turkish/Syrian culture.

Hatay
The appealing property and the reason of the migrations throughout the history to the Antakya region, are the result of suitable and appropriate climate conditions, productive and fertile lands. Beside these two facts another important characteristic of the region is its being at the intersection point of the road which connects Anatolia to Syria and Palestine over Çukurova. In addition, the most convenient ports for suitable routes to Mediterranean from Mesopotamia are also located in this region. With its current faith tourism centers, ancient cities and beautiful plateaus, the province of Hatay has a high potential for tourism.

The districts of Hatay province are; Altınözü, Belen Dörtyol, Erzin, Hassa, İskenderun, Kırıkhan, Kumlu , Reyhanlı, Samandağ and Yayladağı.

In addition to the climatic conditions and fertile lands that make the Antakya region attractive and open to immigration throughout its history, it is located at the crossroads of the roads connecting Anatolia to Syria and Palestine via Çukurova. In addition, the most suitable ports to be used to exit Mesopotamia to the Mediterranean are also in this region.
Hatay is a province with tourism potential with its religious tourism centers, ancient cities and plateaus.
GEOGRAPHY
Hatay is a border province consisting of the Gor Çukurlük, which includes the El Bekaa Valley between the Syria and Lebanon mountains at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Region. The Amik Plain, which has the fertile lands of the province between the Nur Mountains (Amanos) extending from the north to the southwest and the Kel Mountain and the Syrian plateaus, forms a coastal plain extending in a strip in the west.
The main streams of the province are Asi, Karasu and Afrin rivers. There are two dams used for irrigation purposes. One is the Tahtaköprü Dam, which was built on the black water, and the other is the Yarseli Dam, which was built on the Bohsin Stream.
In terms of vegetation, apart from the large forest areas consisting of Juniper, Oak, Beech, Cranberry, Poplar and Sycamore trees, there are also maquis covered with Mersin, Laurel, Thyme and Lavender plants.
The Mediterranean climate prevails in Hatay, with hot and dry summers and warm and rainy winters.
HISTORY
The history of the first settlement in Antakya, which has a history of approximately 2300 years, dates back to BC. It goes up to 8000. After the death of Alexander, the city was founded by Seleukos, who shared his empire with his commanders. Later, it came under the rule of Parth, Sassanid, Byzantine, Abbasid Tolunogullari, Aksitler, Hamdanogullari, Seljuk, Crusader and Mamluk. The city passed under Ottoman rule during the Egypt Campaign of Yavuz Sultan Selim. In 1937, the independent Hatay State was established, and in 1939 Hatay was connected to the Republic of Turkey.
DISTRICTS:
Districts of Hatay province; Altınözü, Belen Dörtyol, Erzin, Hassa, İskenderun, Kırıkhan, Kumlu, Reyhanlı, Samandağ and Yayladağı.
Belen: It was founded on the Amanos Mountains, at the most important passage connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Amik Plain. It is a district developed around the caravanserai, mosque and bath, which was built by Suleiman the Magnificent in the 1550s. Sogukoluk (Guzelyayla) and Atik are the highlands that attract great attention in the summer months.
Dortyol: It was established between the Iskenderun Bay and the Nur Mountains. Dörtyol is known for its citrus production, beaches and Botaş Pipeline Facilities. There is a forest recreation park in Kuzuculu.
Erzin: It is surrounded by Adana, Osmaniye, Dortyol and Iskenderun Gulf. Erzin is known for its citrus production and beaches. There is a forest park near the district, a thermal spring and a mineral water spring in the Başlamış Village, and facilities for health tourism where this source is located.
Kırıkhan: It is located on the Amik Plain, between the Nur Mountains and the Syrian border, and the districts of Hassa and Kumlu. Karasu passes through the district borders. Gölbaşı Lake (Balık Lake), the only natural lake of Hatay, is within the borders of Kırıkhan.

Iskenderun
Iskenderun, connected to the province of Hatay, is a modern city on the shore of the bay named after him. With its back to the Nur Mountains rising like a wall just behind the coast, it is a green and four-season hot tourist center, as well as a busy commercial port.
Mosques and Churches
In Hatay, which is an important religious tourism center, there is the Saint Pierre Church, the world's first Catholic Church. Hatay, which has an important place in the history of Christianity, is also one of the four great patriarchate centers.

Santa Churches Group (Smoky-Center)
Santa (today called Dumanlı) settlement, which was an important settlement in the past, is 45-50 km away from Gümüşhane. From the neighborhoods here; In Terzil, St. Theodor Church, İlyas Prophet Church in Binatlı, St. Kiryaki Church and Ishan Piştoflu St. Christopher Church, Çakallı Church in Çakallı, St. Constantine and St. Peter's Churches are the important ones.
It is estimated that these churches were built in the 1860-1870s. They are interesting structures with their original door, window frames, relief crosses and bell towers.
