Peterborough, United Kingdom

Short trip to Peterborough, United Kingdom to meet up my former boss. Welcome to United Kingdom boss Rhymes hehe.

Peterborough is a good place to visit and plenty of spots to explore. However, we only managed to explore the Cathedral which is near to the city center.

Trivia:
Peterborough is a city in eastern England. It’s known for the 12th- and 13th-century Peterborough Cathedral, with its Gothic facade. In a former hospital building, the Peterborough Museum has a reconstructed Victorian operating theatre, plus fossils and paintings. Flag Fen Archaeology Park features Bronze Age village and causeway remains. Nene Park is home to woodlands, footpaths and Ferry Meadows recreation area.

Places to see in ( Whittlesey - UK )

Places to see in ( Whittlesey - UK )

Whittlesey, historically known as Whittlesea or Witesie, is an ancient Fenland market town about 6 miles east of Peterborough, in the Fenland district of Cambridgeshire in England. With the neighbouring villages of Coates, Eastrea, Pondersbridge and Turves, it had a population of 16,058 at the 2011 Census.

Whittlesey is located between the city of Peterborough, 6 miles (10 km) to the west and the town of March, 11 miles (18 km) to the east, and is bordered to the north by the River Nene and to the south by Whittlesey Dyke. Historically it was connected to Peterborough and March by the Roman road Fen Causeway constructed in the first century AD, a route approximately followed by the modern A605.

The rail station is on the Ely to Peterborough Line (historically the Great Eastern Line), with direct trains to Cambridge, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leicester, Stansted Airport, Ely, Ipswich and Peterborough. Whittlesey appears in the Cartularium Saxonicum (973 A.D.) as Witlesig, in the Domesday Book as Witesie.

Whittlesey was also infamous for its number of public houses; folk lore dictates that, at one time, there were 52 - one for each week of the year. In 1797, a local farmer, when writing his diary, noted that 'they like drinking better than fighting in Whittlesea'. In other history, Whittlesey was an important trade route in the late Bronze Age (about 1100-800 BC), where civilisations traded with many places, including the Balkans. Such evidence is clear at the important archeological site of Must Farm, where log boats, roundhouses, bowls with food in them, and the most complete wooden wheel were housed.

The Market Place, located in the centre of Whittlesey, is still the site of the town's market, held every Friday. A right to hold a weekly market was first granted in 1715, although there have been several periods since then during which the market did not function, for example from the late 1700s until c. 1850. Because of the nearby city of Peterborough, the market is no longer of great importance to the town.

The 'Whittlesey Summer Festival', held annually in September, takes over much of the town centre. Attractions in recent years included a large classic car display, a large Italian Food stall, fairground rides, a steam engine, and in 2009, a flying display by a Hawker Hurricane of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. An art competition, for students of Sir Harry Smith Community College also runs with the festival, with entries displayed throughout the day in the Whittlesey Christian Church. 2009 also saw the people of Whittlesey raise £10,000 for bushfire victims in Whittlesea, Melbourne.

The town has one secondary school, Sir Harry Smith Community College (opened in 1953 on the site of Whittlesey Workhouse), and three primary schools. There is also another primary school in the neighbouring village of Coates. Whittlesey Museum is located in the Old Town Hall and contains collections relating to the natural and cultural heritage of Whittlesey and the surrounding area.

( Whittlesey - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Whittlesey . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Whittlesey - UK

Ilkeston Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Derbyshire, and around nine miles northeast of Derby, is the town of Ilkeston.

Geographically Ilkeston is situated on one of the last hills at the southern end of the Pennines. It forms part of the Borough of Erewash, named after the River Erewash which runs just to the east of the town centre. It is believed to have been founded in the 6th century AD, whose name comes from its founder Elch or Elcha (the 'ton' suffix just means town).

Ilkeston's town centre is around 360 feet above sea level. At its heart is St Mary's Church, which was founded in 1150, although much of the present building is significantly younger. In 1252 Ilkeston was granted a market charter by Henry III.

In 1779 the Erewash Canal opened. This was followed, in 1793, by the Nutbrook Canal. These waterways transformed Ilkeston from a small market town into a thriving industrial hub. Coal could now be transported from the local coal fields to the River Trent, and then further afield. Other products carried included pottery, textiles and iron.

In the 19th century natural mineral waters were discovered in Ilkeston. In the early 1830s a bathhouse was opened at the bottom of Town Street, which was later renamed to Bath Street (seen throughout the second half of the video). This was a popular tourist attraction for over 60 years. The bathhouse was eventually demolished in 1899. This was attributed to a combination of general decline in the popularity of spa bathing, and alleged contamination of the waters from mining activities.

Ilkeston received its first railway connection in 1847 with the opening of Ilkeston Junction. This was followed by Ilkeston Town in the same year and Ilkeston North in 1878. By 1967, however, all three stations had closed. For fifty years the town was one of the biggest in the UK to be without a railway station. This was rectified in 2017 with the opening of the current station on the line between Nottingham and Leeds.

Throughout the 19th and 20th century Ilkeston was a significant producer of coal, iron, lace and textiles. Although most of the large-scale indstries that contributed to the social and economic development of the town have gone, their presence is still reflected to some extent in the architecture.

Evening Rush Hour at Yaxley Lode, ECML | 03/08/18

This video is a property of Richard Chalklin

2160p 4K UHD!

Had some time to waste with a quick trip to Yaxley Lode on the East Coast Mainline for around 1 hour during the rush hour period of Friday 3rd August 2018. It was windy and it was difficult to keep the camera still. This is one of my first locations i have had to have a bit of a walk to get to inwhich it was about a mile walk to the crossing!

Yaxley info:

Yaxley is a village and civil parish in Cambridgeshire, England. Yaxley lies approximately 4 miles (6 km) south of Peterborough, just off the A15 road. Yaxley is situated within Huntingdonshire which is a non-metropolitan district of Cambridgeshire as well as being a historic county of England. The village is located near the Hampton township, and is approximately three miles north-east of junction 16 of the A1(M) at Norman Cross.

History:

Yaxley was listed as Lacheslei in the Domesday Book of 1086 in the Hundred of Normancross in Huntingdonshire. In 1086 there was one manor at Yaxley and 39 households.

Government:

As a civil parish, Yaxley has a parish council. The parish council is elected by the residents of the parish who have registered on the electoral roll; the parish council is the lowest tier of government in England. A parish council is responsible for providing and maintaining a variety of local services including allotments and a cemetery; grass cutting and tree planting within public open spaces such as a village green or playing fields. The parish council reviews all planning applications that might affect the parish and makes recommendations to Huntingdonshire District Council, which is the local planning authority for the parish. The parish council also represents the views of the parish on issues such as local transport, policing and the environment. The parish council raises its own tax to pay for these services, known as the parish precept, which is collected as part of the Council Tax.

Yaxley was in the historic and administrative county of Huntingdonshire until 1965. From 1965, the village was part of the new administrative county of Huntingdon and Peterborough. Then in 1974, following the Local Government Act 1972, Yaxley became a part of the county of Cambridgeshire.

The second tier of local government is Huntingdonshire District Council which is a non-metropolitan district of Cambridgeshire and has its headquarters in Huntingdon. Huntingdonshire District Council has 52 councillors representing 29 district wards. Huntingdonshire District Council collects the council tax, and provides services such as building regulations, local planning, environmental health, leisure and tourism. Yaxley is a part of the district ward of Yaxley and Farcet and is represented on the district council by three councillors. District councillors serve for four-year terms following elections to Huntingdonshire District Council.

For Yaxley the highest tier of local government is Cambridgeshire County Council which has administration buildings in Cambridge. The county council provides county-wide services such as major road infrastructure, fire and rescue, education, social services, libraries and heritage services. Cambridgeshire County Council consists of 69 councillors representing 60 electoral divisions. Yaxley is part of the electoral division of Norman Cross and is represented on the county council by two councillors.

At Westminster Yaxley is in the parliamentary constituency of North West Cambridgeshire, and elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. Yaxley is represented in the House of Commons by Shailesh Vara (Conservative). Shailesh Vara has represented the constituency since 2005. The previous member of parliament was Brian Mawhinney (Conservative) who represented the constituency between 1997 and 2005. For the European Parliament Yaxley is part of the East of England constituency which elects seven MEPs using the d'Hondt method of party-list proportional representation.

Demography:

In the period 1801 to 1901 the population of Yaxley was recorded every 10 years by the UK census. During this time the population was in the range of 986 (the lowest was in 1801) and 1,590 (the highest was in 1901).

From 1901, a census was taken every ten years with the exception of 1941 (due to the Second World War). The population at the Census 2011 included Denton.

In 2011, the parish covered an area of 3,296 acres (1,334 hectares) and the population density of Yaxley in 2011 was 1781.4 persons per square mile (687.7 per square kilometre).

Sport and leisure:

Yaxley has a Non-League football club Yaxley F.C., which play at Leading Drove. Yaxley also has a number of Rugby League players who play with Cambridge Lions in Cambridge. Denmark's Speedway World Cup winning captain Niels-Kristian Iversen is the village's most famous sporting resident.

The Yaxley to Farcet cycleway has now been placed, this comes after two boys were killed on this route

Vintage buses feature at the 2023 Fenland BusFest which took place in lovely spring sunshine at Whittlesey Market Place which ensured a good turn out for those who wished to enjoy a trip around the local area and a pub lunch.

These routes were designed to enable you to hop off and enjoy lunch at any one a number of delightful pubs along the way and at Ramsey there was the classic car show, Fen Fair and RuralMuseum to visit. So plenty of things to see and do.
The action begins at Whittlesey to see some of the early trips departing. The action moves around the town with some of the buses arriving back at the bus station in Whittlesey.
I had to leave early on the 701 back to Peterborough Bus Station where Southern National 934 can be seen.
I think you will agree there was a fantastic selection of buses and coaches so thanks to all the owners and the organisers for their hard work in putting on this event.

Sorry about the beginning, trying to get my stand off my camera. So, here's the story for this event! I just got over to my mum's work and we rushed back to our house and picked up my dog. We was going to go down to Great Drove (where my other video, the Bittern dressed up as the Dominion of New Zealand was filmed) but time was getting on and we wouldn't have seen it. We got there and i took my camera and tripod on the bridge. i saw smoke so i set up. Then it came round the corner and this is what i saw...
