12 Incredible things to do in Waco, Tx

Ah, the land of Joanna Gaines, shiplap, and silos. If you are heading to Waco, Texas and don't know what I am referring to here is the down low. Chip and Joanna Gaines have taken the home design world by storm through their HGTV show, Fixer Upper. They take dilapidated old homes in Waco and give them a beautiful farmhouse style facelift. They have changed the whole dynamic of the town (and of home design all over the US), so it is essential to understand who they are when looking for things to do in Waco, TX. If Fixer Upper doesn't pique your interest, don't fret, there are plenty of other things to do in Waco. For more information visit:

Waco Mammoth National Monument: A Window into the Ice Age

Guess what? Waco Mammoth National Monument is like a super special place managed by the National Park Service, which is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior. It became a National Monument in 2015, so it's a fairly new addition to the National Park System!

This awesome park sits on 100 acres of wooded land right along the Bosque River. There's a cool visitor center where you can find bathrooms and even a gift shop. Because of the pandemic, things are set up a bit differently – ticketing, the gift shop, and talking to the Rangers all happen outside. They even set up tents to make sure everyone has enough space to stay safe and have a great time! How cool is that?

History: Paul Barron and Eddie Bufkin first discovered the Mammoth site while out searching for arrowheads and fossils along the Bosque River. They found a huge bone that was sticking out from the Ravine. They knew their find was unusual and took it to Baylor University's Strecker Museum (know known as Mayborn Museum Complex). The staff at the museum identified their find as a femur bone from a Columbian mammoth. The mammoths lived during what is commonly known as the Ice Age.

Baylor staff immediately organized an excavation of the site. The remains of 16 Columbian mammoths were discovered between 1978 and 1990. The mammoths found during this time can now be found at Baylor University's Mayborn Museum Complex. The fossils discovered after 1990 still remain at the dig site for viewing.

Scientists are still uncertain how all of these mammoths died at the same location. Human interference has been ruled out. One theory is that they all dies during a flash flood which explains the other animals found at the site.

If you are interesting in visiting the Waco Mammoth National Monument while in Waco, check out the official website for hours and ticket information:

The Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park, formerly the Williams Waterwall and the Transco Waterwall, is a multi-story sculptural fountain that sits opposite the south face of Williams Tower in the Uptown District of Houston. The fountain and its surrounding park were built as an architectural amenity to the adjacent tower. Both the fountain and tower were designed by John Burgee Architects with Philip Johnson.

The waterwall and the surrounding land were purchased by the Uptown Houston Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone, a non-profit local government corporation, in 2008 to ensure the long term preservation of the waterwall and park. The fountain currently operates between 10 am and 9 pm.

The architects' design for the Waterwall was to be a horseshoe of rushing water opposite the Transco (now Williams) Tower. The semi-circular fountain is 64 feet (20 m) tall, to symbolize the 64 stories of the tower, and sits among 118 Texas live oak trees. The concave portion of the circle, which faces north toward the tower, is fronted by a proscenium arch shorter than the fountain itself. The convex portion, its backside, faces south onto Hidalgo Street.
