Places to see in ( Withernsea - UK )

Places to see in ( Withernsea - UK )

Withernsea is a seaside resort town and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, and forms the focal point for a wider community of small villages in Holderness. Its most famous landmark is the white inland lighthouse, rising around 127 feet (39 m) above Hull Road. The lighthouse – no longer active – now houses a museum to 1950s actress Kay Kendall, who was born in the town. The Prime Meridian crosses the coast to the north-west of Withernsea.

Like many seaside resorts, Withernsea has a wide promenade which reaches north and south from Pier Towers, the historic entrance to the pier, built in 1877 at a cost of £12,000. The pier was originally 399 yards (365 metres) long, but was gradually reduced in length through several impacts by local ships, starting with the Saffron in 1880 before the collision by an unnamed ship in 1888, again by a Grimsby fishing boat and again by the Henry Parr in 1893, leaving the once grand pier with a mere 50 feet (15 metres) of damaged wood and steel, which was removed in 1903. The Pier Towers have been refurbished.

During the mid-19th century the Hull and Holderness Railway was constructed, connecting the nearby city of Hull with Withernsea (via Keyingham and Patrington) and making possible cheap and convenient holidays for Victorian workers and their families, as well as boosting Withernsea's economy. It closed in 1964 and all that remains of it is an overgrown footpath where the track used to be. Withernsea, like many British resorts, has suffered from a decline in the number of visiting holidaymakers.

Some of the town's better-known tourist attractions and landmarks include:

The lighthouse situated on Hull Road with a museum dedicated to the actress Kay Kendall.
The Pier Towers leading onto a Blue Flag beach.
Valley Gardens with a large square and outside stage for local events and celebrations.
Various amusement arcades (informally known as 'muggies') that line the road opposite the Valley Gardens.
An RNLI lifeboat museum.
The parish church of St Nicholas, a Grade II* listed building.
The Greenwich Meridian; Just outside the town.

Withernsea has its own hospital owned by the NHS which was subject to services cuts and lost its Accident and Emergency Department facility, it is now a community hospital. Withernsea has five emergency service stations located within the town, Yorkshire Ambulance Service; Humberside Fire and Rescue Service; Humberside Police; Her Majesty's Coastguard and Royal National Lifeboat Institution station.

WITHERNSEA: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #69 of 172

EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #69: WITHERNSEA

Withernsea is a seaside resort town on the Holderness Coast of the East Riding of Yorkshire, and forms the focal point for a wider community of small villages, some we’ve already seen

It’s a typical seaside town with some nice beaches and plenty of amusement arcades. It’s even got the traditional flock of seagulls waiting to nick your fish and chips on the seafront

It’s most famous landmark is its lighthouse which is no longer active but now houses a museum to 1950s actress Kay Kendall. Aside from her, Withernsea has had a few other notable residents

It’s the birthplace of Jazz musician Kenny Baker, and footballer Stuart Gray. Dick Davis, the English-American poet, teacher, and award-winning translator of Persian poetry, grew up in Withernsea during the 1950s.

In more recent times, The Ruby Red Performers, a group of dancers who appeared on the 9th series of Britain's Got Talent in 2015, are from Withernsea

Withernsea sits close to the line of the Prime Meridian which crosses the coast to the north-west of the town. As such, there are a few references to it here including the Meridian Centre

Once upon a time, you could catch a train to Withernsea from Hull. In Victorian times, Withernsea provided a cheap and convenient holiday for thousands of workers in Hull.

The railway line has now gone, but Withernsea is still thriving, and in the summer months, it still welcomes lots of tourists. Let’s go check it out!

Walking through WORST RATED Seaside Town - Bridlington, Yorkshire!

I visit Bridlington, the 9th worst rated seaside town in the UK to see what gives this place such a bad rating. I recently visited Skegness the number 1 worst rated seaside town in the UK and didn't think it was that bad. So will Bridlington fair any better?

I walk along Bridlington South Beach and North Beach, see what the sand and sea is like, look at the cool beach huts. Go for fish and chips at Pier 6 Broadwalk Cafe for some award winning fish and chips. Check out Bridlington Spa RNLI Lifeboat Station and East Riding Leisure Bridlington which are all pretty impressive buildings. Walk along a few of the piers that Bridlington have including North Pier. I also take a walk along the main promenade to look at the amusements, games and activities.

Withernsea is a very enjoyable escape in East Yorkshire, located nearby to Hull. Standing on the North Sea, it boasts splendid beaches, a lighthouse a long way from the sea, and waves that knock over Jenni.

Flamborough Head is a promontory, 8 miles (13 km) long on the Yorkshire coast of England, between the Filey and Bridlington bays of the North Sea. It is a chalk headland, with sheer white cliffs. The cliff top has two standing lighthouse towers, the oldest dating from 1669 and Flamborough Head Lighthouse built in 1806. The older lighthouse was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1952 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. The cliffs provide nesting sites for many thousands of seabirds, and are of international significance for their geology.Flamborough Head has one of the most important seabird colonies in Europe.
Flamborough Cliffs Nature Reserve, as part of Flamborough Head, is designated as a Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area (SPA), and is also a part of the Flamborough Head Heritage Coast. Flamborough Head is the most northerly location at which you can find coastal chalk cliffs in the UK.
Algal and lichen communities found within the sea caves in the cliffs are one of the less known reasons for the sites international importance. 20% of Flamborough Head’s breeding sea bird population can be found on the relatively short stretch of coastline of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve.

The best place to see puffins on the UK's mainland coast is at YWT's North Landing reserve. Huge colonies of guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes are also visible from clifftop vantage points. Superb rockpools and sea caves are revealed at low tide at North landing and Thornwick Bay plus regular boat trips (pre-booking essential) to view seabirds close up and learn about the chalk cliffs, sea caves and underwater reefs. The cliffs above the beaches host a huge variety of chalkland plants and butterflies. In winter, barn owls, stoats and weasels can often be seen hunting in daylight, and gannets and fumars start to return to the Headland in January, so there's plenty to see.
Flamborough Cliffs is a spectacular reserve to visit at any time of year; the weather, sea and wildlife give you a different experience every trip. Whether you go there on a bright sunny day when the clear blue sea looks almost tropical and the sight, sounds and smell of thousands of nesting seabirds assaults your senses; or in winter with a raging sea echoing around the sea caves and a gale so strong you hardly dare walk close to the cliff top. These experiences are unrepeatable; you will not forget Flamborough Cliffs reserve easily.

Withernsea Boxing Day Dip, East Yorkshire, UK

Ever Boxing Day it has been a tradition for those brave enough to have a dip in the North Sea for charity. My phone couldn't get close up shots as the tide was quite a way out. It was also quite windy and cold! No background music - just enjoy the roar of the wind and sea!
