Driving Around Small Town Winona, Minnesota in 4k Video

Filmed on Tuesday, August 15 2023, I drive around the village Winona, MN to see what's going on.

The city is named after Winona, a figure in a Sioux legend.

European immigrants settled the area in 1851 and laid out the town into lots in 1852 and 1853. The original settlers were immigrants from New England.

The population increased from 815 in December, 1855, to 3,000 in December, 1856.

Between 1859 and 1900, some 5,000 Poles and closely related Kashubians emigrated to Winona, making up one quarter of the population. Since 80% of them were Kashubians, Winona became known as the Kashubian Capital of America.

For a time, Winona had more millionaires than any other city of its size in the United States.

As of the census of 2020, there were 25,948 people residing in the city, down from 27,592 in 2010.

The racial makeup of the city was 89.3% White, 2.8% Black or African American, 2.2% Asian, 0.3% Native American, 1.3% from other races, and 4.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.

Banning State Park, located just over an hour drive from the Twin Cities, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historic sites. Here, you can explore the mesmerizing sandstone cliffs, hike through dense forests, and witness the power of the Kettle River as it rushes through the rocky gorge. For those interested in history, the park is also home to the remains of the Banning Sandstone Quarry, providing a glimpse into the region's industrial past.

Last but not least, we have Interstate State Park, nestled along the scenic St. Croix River. This park offers breathtaking views of the river from towering cliffs, ancient glacial potholes, and unique rock formations. With miles of hiking and biking trails, kayaking opportunities, and picnic areas, Interstate State Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
