CHESTERFIELD | The most underrated town in the UK?

CHESTERFIELD | The most underrated town in the UK?
Gimbal Walk TV visits Chesterfield, Derbyshire - a town with a crooked spire close to Sheffield and Derby, to see if this really is the most underrated UK town.

Chesterfield is a town we have visited before and we have decided to travel back to this market town close to Sheffield and see what's here and what the town has to offer.

Best known for the church with the crooked spire, Chesterfield is a town that I think has so much more to offer whether that's the magnificent town hall, the old historic buildings scattered throughout the town, the winding wheel theatre, the shops, the pubs, the market and market hall and more.

The thing I find with Chesterfield is that if you mention it to locals, many of them will have a bit of a moan about the town centre, and people from outside the town will tell me that they don't really know that much about the place. Chesterfield is perhaps best known for the crooked spire of its Church of Saint Mary and All Saints and is why the local football team is known as The Spireites.

So let's have a walking tour around Chesterfield Town Centre and take a look at what's here, and what Chesterfield has within it's town centre.

Visit Chesterfield for a great day out or to stay. Brilliantly located in the centre of the UK with superb road, rail and air links, the town is famous for its 800 year-old open air market and the unique and unusual 'Crooked Spire' Church.

Whether it's a town or village experience, contemporary or traditional housing, buying or renting, living in Chesterfield and the surrounding area is affordable and offers something for everyone. With friendly and welcoming communities it's a safe place to live and bring up a family.

Chesterfield is in The Midlands and Sheffield is in the North. If you travel from Chesterfield to Sheffield on the dual carriageway there is a brow on the hill where the watershed divides either north or south.

Chesterfield in Derbyshire is a town of great character with a history of significance way beyond our immediate area.

Chesterfield has a fabulous offer for businesses, residents and visitors alike. Chesterfield is far more than a historic market town in Derbyshire with an iconic Crooked Spire.

Chesterfield is a market town and unparished area in the Borough of Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England, 24 miles north of Derby and 11 miles south of Sheffield at the confluence of the River Rother and River Hipper.

NORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE ROUND-UP

Hello NORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE people!

It's been a while I know, but finally the NORTH EAST DERBYSHIRE ROUND-UP video is here!

Using information that's been sent to me by all you lovely people out there, this is the video that catches all those comments and anecdotes and whatever else you wanted me to talk about, that I either missed or got wrong in the twenty four parishes of NORTH EAST DEREBYSHIRE!

In alphabetical order, I go through the district, from Ashover to Wingerworth and everything in between bringing the district to a close with all the extra information you lovely people out there have sent to me.

The long term plan for Derbyshire will see me hopefully begin AMBER VALLEY next year in early 2023, but for now, Derbyshire is on the backburner for a while as I concentrate on other areas.

I'll see you down the road.

GREAT WAKERING: Rochford Parish #1 of 14

So after filming both Canvey Island and Leigh on Sea after the Kent trip, I found myself with plenty of time left to do a little extra on the same evening. It was still nice outside and I had plenty of energy left, not to mention a lot of camera battery! I didn't think being sat in a hotel room in Southend was the right thing to be doing when I could be out filming this little peach of a place.

This is only four miles from Southend, but it feels like a world away. Southend is quite an urban locality, and it you walk around the town centre you get the impression you're almost in a city. This village has no such feeling to it, and with it being close to the coast as well (and not a beachy coast either), this may as well be the other end of the country.

A village that was forged around the old brickworks, and today with a population of over 5,000 people, the folk here have a storied past and plenty of old buildings to show it. There's any number of halls which can be used as venues for various functions, not to mention there's four pubs that line the High Street here, meaning you're never short of a place to find a drink.

The 1953 Canvey Island floods affected this village is pretty much the same was as they did there, but despite the church of St Nicholas being only 18 feet above sea level, that survived whilst the rest of the village was swamped by the floodwaters. Most of the land around the village is MOD property, Foulness Island is a place you need permission to access (and to film in fact, which is going to be fun when I attempt Foulness CP!), unless you're willing to walk The Broomway - the most dangerous path in Britain - via Wakering Stairs - which is the only other legal way onto it.

Welcome to the first parish of the fourteen in the district of Rochford. A small elongated area of Essex lined with creeks and islands, but a whole lot of character. Here's my tour of GREAT WAKERING.

BREADSALL: Erewash Parish #2 of 14

This is a picturesque old village surrounded by woodland with a population of 773, with a wonderfully active community with an array of social clubs, as well as access to something called the Greenway and network of paths for both walking and cycling

The village nowadays is relatively peaceful and only gets busy during some rush hour periods when drivers use the village as a thoroughfare to the northern tip of nearby Oakwood, and further afield, to areas including Hilltop, Morley, West Hallam, Heanor and Ilkeston.

The Harpur-Crewe’s were the estate holders here, it being founded in the early 1500s by Richard Harpur who was a solicitor in London. Henry Harpur was one of his ancestors, and he would marry Lady Jane Crewe, thus becoming Henry Harpur-Crewe. The botanist Joseph Whittaker was born here in 1815[9]

The village is a very popular location for retired people who want to live comfortably in their later years, while still in reach of Derby city centre. The physician Erasmus Darwin is buried here. One of the key thinkers of the Midlands Enlightenment, he was also a natural philosopher, physiologist, slave-trade abolitionist, inventor and poet.

All around the village you will find a number of these small green areas, known as “triangles”, and they make it pretty obvious you’re in BREADSALL.

HOLMESFIELD: North East Derbyshire Parish #23 of 24

Now for a gorgeous little village and civil parish on the edge of the Peak District in North East Derbyshire. The penultimate parish no less in this district for us! The name means raised pasture-land and is of Norse and Anglo-Saxon origin. Viking influences are also evident with many road names suffixed by gate, the old Norse word for way.

It is well known for a regular farmers and artisan market held in the main village on various dates throughout the year although no markets have been held since December 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The markets are normally situated either at the Angel Inn pub or just next door at St. Swithin's Church Hall.

The parish includes a number of farming hamlets such as Millthorpe situated in the Cordwell Valley and has a number of narrow, tight, often windy lanes both within the main village and within the smaller hamlets, most of which are unsuitable for HGVs

Robert Murray Gilchrist, author of regional interest books about the Peak District, lived and died at Cartledge Hall and is buried in the parish churchyard. G.H.B. Ward, activist for ramblers' rights and co-founder of the Clarion Ramblers in Sheffield, was a Labour Party politician who lived at Owler Bar, a very important area here, at least traffic wise, out to the West

You can discover all about that and much more in this latest offering in North East Derbyshire – HOLMESFIELD.

Wentworth Woodhouse - The Great Survivor | #wentworthwoodhouse |

This week we reflect on how lucky we are that Wentworth Woodhouse has actually survived, against all the odds, to the present day.

Throughout most of 20th Century, houses like Wentworth Woodhouse were regularly destroyed as their owners grappled with changing social conditions, reduced estate revenues and higher levels of taxation.

That a house on the scale of Wentworth Woodhouse managed to survive is extraordinary, and we'll tell the stories of the various individuals and organisations who worked so hard to save the building, in upcoming videos.

Last month, we celebrated the completion of emergency repairs to the structure of the building. This video shows some of the other local heritage that wasn't quite so fortunate.

Many thanks to Lost Heritage for sourcing most of the archive imagery used in this video. If you'd like to see more, please go to

ELSENHAM: Uttlesford Parish #1 of 60

Alright today sees us start a brand new district, and this is in Essex. This district has SIXTY parishes, and all of them in their own way shape or form are going to unequivocally show just why walking around a village in rural England is the best thing there is, bar none, to do when you've got a nice day and some friendly folk to do it with.

This is Uttlesford in North West Essex, perhaps the prettiest district in the East of England, although some places in Norfolk might well be disagreeing with that statement. Personally, I think i's a marvellous part of the country, and hopefully after seeing these first few villages you'll agree.

We begin with this one, which is pretty big compared to a lot within Uttlesford. One of London's six major International Airports is shared between this one and the neighbouring Takeley to the South, and it is here, along an otherwise uninspiring country road that you can watch the planes take off and land perfectly legally on a patch of grass alongside the airfeild.

The village itself is a masterpiece. It has several claims to fame. Firstly, the production of jam which was once called the most expensive jam in the world; secondly, one of Team GB's Gold postboxes can be found here in tribute to local showjumper Ben Maher, and how about the station here that has one of the very few remaining hand operated level crossings anywhere in England?

Uttlesford is amazing and for sure, you won't be finding many villages quite like ELSENHAM.

Ashover - Peak District Villages

- Ashover . The ancient village of Ashover is a large, sprawling settlement of many parts and has a rich and fascinating history filled with remarkable characters.

Ashover is situated in the beautiful Amber Valley and nestles snugly in richly picturesque countryside almost in the centre of a vast bowl of land, with wooded slopes and rocky hills rising all around, and with narrow lanes leading like strands of a spiders web from the village centre in all directions.

Ashover is a huge sprawling parish of some ten thousand acres with numerous small villages within it's boundaries, and the richness of its diverse nature can be attributed to the parish's geological structure, where, as at Crich, an island of limestone rises from an encircling sea of gritstone.

The gritstone hills which surround the village must also have contributed to its independent character, for they isolated the village to such an extent that it was late in the eighteenth century before the first wheeled vehicles penetrated this part of the Amber Valley. For centuries until the first metalled road was driven into the valley, Ashover remained virtually a self-sufficient and self supporting microcosm of Derbyshire, rich in both minerals and lush pastureland suitable for dairy farming, and throughout its history these two occupations have provided the main source of Ashover's prosperity.

HEATH AND HOLMEWOOD: North East Derbyshire Parish #3 of 24

Chesterfield folks, I'm back again, and this time I'm coming at you with a parish that's not only big in terms of size, but also very important historically. There's loads of things in this one from start to finish, I didn't have time to catch my breath when I edited this one, because there's so much to pack into it, way more than I could fit in in fact, meaning there are bits left out of this one.

This is essentially a mining community, with a memorial garden now home to the winding wheel from Williamthorpe Colliery. There's also a trail located on the former site of that colliery too, known as the Five Pits Trail, which follows the old route of the Grand Central Railway. There's two villages here, one which sprung up around the pit (and subsequently stayed sprung when it closed thanks to the huge industrial estate built to counteract the unemployment that followed), and a smaller village leased from the Chatsworth Estate, drenched in history, and much different to it's fellow parish occupant.

This is all located in a large area of land mostly to the West of the M1, an area that existed long before the road did, and as such the new transport route now cuts right through the smaller of the two villages, severing the roads that used to link it to the neighbouring village of Palterton. In fact, those roads still exist, except now, you're just going to be met with a dead end if you try to drive down them.

One such road that exists on both sides of the A617 (and it's a good job it does) leads to something that I've captured in the video that you would only know about if you did a little research online before visiting. I'm glad I did because I've passed the site in question so many times before and I've never given it a second thought.

To find out what that is, and discover the amazing 8 square kilometres of land which this parish sit it, I strongly recommend having a watch of my attempt at covering HEATH AND HOLMEWOOD.

ECKINGTON: North East Derbyshire Parish #13 of 24

A parish now which i seriously have had to think about a lot. This is one that is so large and has so many settlements in it, that there is no way I can confidently say that everything has been covered. For once, I am happy to admit, there are bit that are left out of this one. Hopefully, nothing too major!

It consists of a string of villages all surrounding one central location in the Moss Valley, just to the South of Sheffield. This is an area made famous by the largest ironworks in Derbyshire, an area that used to make scythes and sickles and nails too, with products from the valley shipped all over the world.

There's evidence here of a Roman settlement at one time as well, so the history books are overflowing with things to say about this village - and yes, a village it is. Even though the size and the population of the place belies its status, this is one of those anomalies that I just can't wrap my head around: a main settlement that has well over 11,000 people yet doesn't have town status.

Welcome to the enormous ECKINGTON.

TEMPLE NORMANTON: North East Derbyshire Parish #2 of 24

Back into North East Derbyshire we go today and we're looking at one of the district's smallest in this episode, and also one of the district's most interesting churches too. In fact, that church is so special, there are no other churches like it anywhere in the ENTIRE country! Yes, today my friends, we come to a place in which half a baked bean can is used as a place of worship!

That's a crude nickname for the church in actual fact, but one that accurately does describe the shape and style of the building in question. You see, here in this village there have been no less than four churches, all built in varying styles and the latest one here was created in the 1980s, out of orange reinforced glass and plastic, at in the shape of a half cylinder!, yet the original Victorian churchyard still remains. It's an odd one, but you love the uniqueness of these things right?

Even if you don't there still some much more normal stuff in this one, like a park and a school and the bus stops etc, but you won't find any shops here or any kind of amenities really. This village is bereft of all of those. In tomes gone by it did have a colliery, the massive Bonds Main, which closed in 1949 after providing this village with employment for some 52 years.

A short trip down Postman's Lane takes us under the Hasland Bypass, AKA the A617, the main road between Chesterfield and Mansfield, which is also the location of a solar photovoltaic farm. All of this is perched on top of a prominent hill top, five miles South East of Chesterfield town centre.

There might not be much here, but this was a nice walk around the parish of TEMPLE NORMANTON.

Chesterfield meet

A report of our meet at Chesterfield.

RISLEY: Erewash Parish #4 of 14

Here’s a typical linear settlement, with houses clinging to both sides of a road. However, thanks to footpaths, it’s a circular walk today. Our first major landmark of note to pass is a hotel, and straight away we’re into a piece of history. Its chief builders were the Willoughby family. Perhaps the most famous resident of the village was Sir Hugh Willoughby. He was a navigator, who sailed in 1553, with three ships, in search of the North-east passage, but ended up frozen to death with all his crew in the following January.

As a linear village, there’s no real centre but you might possibly be able to define one by the location of three buildings - two of them are the church and school. The other is the village hall. Rush Meadow is literally yards away from that with a sign telling us that the name of the village translates from Anglo Saxon to “Rush Meadow”. The village was recorded in the Domesday Book as Riselia and Riselei. Rush Meadow is also believed to be the last untouched area of the original Anglo Saxon settlement.

The church building is over 400 years old. It’s a is Grade II listed building, built for Sir Michael Willoughby as a domestic chapel to the hall in 1593. Consecrated in 1632, its one of only six built during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The Willoughby family’s coat of arms can be seen above the door, with the date 1593.

Next to the church along Derby Road is the Latin House, a fellow Grade II structure which was described by Pevsner as one of the finest buildings in the country. It was built in 1706 for Elizabeth Grey. The Latin House was part of the former Grammar School. It was built to accommodate pupils, a schoolmaster and an usher. The City separates Latin House from some more Grade II listed buildings, Latin College and Latin Cottage

There’s a story to tell here as well. After being lost for a time, a Lanx (A Roman plate) was found here, then lost, and then forged and sold to the British Museum. The fate of the original lanx is unknown. It’s just one of more interesting things about the parish of RISLEY.
