Places to see in ( Ramsbottom - UK )

Places to see in ( Ramsbottom - UK )

Ramsbottom is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, Greater Manchester, England. The population at the 2011 census was 17,872. Historically in Lancashire, it is on the River Irwell in the West Pennine Moors, 3.9 miles (6.3 km) north-northwest of Bury, and 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of Manchester. Its name is believed to derive from Old English ramm and botm, meaning valley of the ram. Its Victorian architecture, Pennine landscape and industrial heritage, including the East Lancashire Railway, contribute to heritage tourism in the town.

The Ramsbottom parish formed in 1844 was a mile and a quarter in length and about three-quarters of a mile in width in the Lower Tottington township in the valley of the River Irwell that extends from Bury to Rossendale. It is bounded to the south by Holcombe Brook and Summerseat; to the north by Edenfield, Irwell Vale, Stubbins and the hamlets of Chatterton and Strongstry; to the west by Holcombe and to the east by Shuttleworth and Turn Village. The area is characterised by its position on the south side of the West Pennine Moors. The high ground rises sharply on either side of the town with Holcombe Moor, Harcles Hill and Bull Hill to the west and Top O' Th' Hoof, Harden Moor, Scout Moor and Whittle Hill to the east.

The railway arrived in Ramsbottom in 1846 when the Manchester, Bury and Rossendale Railway Company built the railway from Bury to a junction with the Manchester and Bolton Railway and extended the line northwards to Rawtenstall and opened a railway station in the town centre. The line between Bury and Rawtenstall remained open to passengers until 1972 and for goods until 1980. This line is used by the East Lancashire Railway, a modern heritage railway which opened in 1987. The district straddles the A676, A56 and B6214 roads with its centre 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Bury, 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Rawtenstall and 6 miles (9.7 km) north east of Bolton. The M66 motorway runs to the east of the town, linking it north to the M65 motorway and south to the M62 motorway and the Manchester Outer Ring Road.

The skyline is dominated by the Peel Monument which stands on Holcombe Moor, a memorial to Sir Robert Peel, the 19th century British Prime Minister and creator of the modern British police force. The tower stands 128 feet (39.0 m) tall on Holcombe Moor. There are spectacular views over West Yorkshire, North Lancashire, Greater Manchester, North Wales and the Lancashire Plain. From the top of the tower it is possible to see Blackpool Tower on a clear day.

Ramsbottom is on the path of the Irwell Sculpture Trail. The Tilted Vase by Edward Allington, a sculpture both classical in shape to reflect the surrounding buildings but apparently bolted together to reflect the old industries, is located in Market Place. This piece of work, weighing around two tons and locally known as the Urn or Urnie, was funded with £250,000 of National Lottery money. Nuttall Park is a large park with facilities for bowls, tennis, football and public events. The park hosts regular fun fairs and family events, and is a popular attraction with locals and tourists alike.

Irish mansion on sale for just €220,000 (what’s the catch?)

This stunning Irish mansion has been put on the market for a bargain price of just €220,000.

Tullaghan House is an 18th century property in Co Leitrim and boasts wonderful sea views.

The seven-bedroom property is near the seaside and sits on two acres of land, located just off the main Sligo to Donegal road.

It was built around 1790 and includes many wonderful features including original tiled floor & stained-glass windows.

There are fireplaces throughout the property including the entrance hallway, drawing room and dining room.

At the back of the house there’s another fascinating feature – the ‘priest’s hole’ which during the penal period was used as a hiding place for priests
.
As you might expect at this price, there is a catch.

Old railway line walk - Blandford Dorset Milldown

A super walk along part of the Old blandford railway line which was closed in the late 60's. It's now a super paved walk and well worth a visit, I didn't complete when whole walk just a portion I will leave that to the viewers. The area I filmed is from Milldown reserve towards the A350. Milldown is never usually particularly busy even in the summer and dog walkers, cyclists and walkers manage to find ample space in the area. Thanks for watching.

Places to see in ( Wincanton - UK )

Places to see in ( Wincanton - UK )

Wincanton is a small town and electoral ward in South Somerset, southwest England. The town lies off the A303 road, a main route between London and South West England, and has some light industry. The town and electoral ward has a population of 5,272.

In the Domesday Book the name of the town was spelled as Wincaleton, thought to mean Pleasant town on the Cale. Cockroad Wood Castle, which is now in the parish of Charlton Musgrove, was a motte and bailey castle, probably built after the Norman conquest of England of 1066. The castle sits close to the contemporary Norman castles of Ballands and Castle Orchard, and may have been built as part of a system of fortifications to control the surrounding area. By 1086 the surrounding land was held by Walter of Douai, although no documentary evidence of the castle remains. The parish of Wincanton was part of the Norton Ferris Hundred. Wincanton was probably the site of a market in the medieval period but did not gain a market and fair charter until 1556.

Wincanton Community Hospital in Dancing Lane was formerly known as Verrington Hospital and in March 2015 had 28 beds on two wards plus intermediate care unit. It opened as an Isolation Hospital in September 1910 for patients with Scarlet Fever. The Balsam Centre is a Healthy Living Centre and also a Children's Centre for Wincanton and South East Somerset.

Wincanton is situated on the northeast edge of Blackmore Vale, 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Yeovil, and 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Shaftesbury on the extreme southeast of Somerset close to the borders of Dorset and Wiltshire. The town had a railway station on the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway but this closed on 7 March 1966. The town is north of the A303 road, one of the main routes between London and South West England. The nearest railway stations are in neighbouring Templecombe, Somerset and Gillingham, Dorset. Trains run on the Exeter to Waterloo line.

Wincanton Museum is a small local museum in the High Street which closed in 2010. You can now visit some of the items which were in the museum in the library which is situated in Carrington Way. The cartoonist Tony Weare was born in Wincanton. Wincanton is unusual in that it was twinned in 2002 with a town which can only be found in fiction. As well as with Gennes / Les Rosiers in France and Lahnau in Germany, Wincanton is twinned with Ankh-Morpork.

A Matty’s drive with us request edition for Graham 11/04/22 Wellington Somerset England countryside

Welcome to Matty’s diaries. Matty is a 15 year old complex character from the English Riviera who just so happens to be my son. Matty started time-lapsing and recording at the beginning of his isolation in March 2020. I have no idea where the idea came from, he just grabbed his IPad one day and started recording his jigsaw progress. This then expanded to diamond paintings, Lego and then our drives out. They became a way of Matty giving his news to loved ones and school friends who he no longer saw. As of today 16.10.2021 writing this update we have been isolating/Shielding 589 days so far. Matty’s just had his first vaccine and we hope to get him back to school in January once staff have retrained. Wrap around care is just me (Tracey) and Mattys dad Mike. I do the waking night shifts and sleep in the morning, this has given me hours of lonely time during the night to edit Matty’s creations and try and make them watchable. It’s almost become a therapy for Matty and I. I’m not going to list Matty’s health record but take away the obvious artificial airway he actually has more complex issues you can’t see. He is really a very innocent, unworldly 4-5 year old who thrives on routine and positive praise. So please be kind, we never imagined that anyone other than family would ever see the videos and to be honest the family stopped watching and commenting a long long time ago. However we have made some lovely YouTube friends who have been such a huge part of Matty’s shielding life. Each day Matty checks his comments to look for his regular viewers who he has come to rely on. They make him happy. Matty cannot reply to comments independently so as much as he reads them every night, I reply with him once or twice a week. We are grateful.
Matty’s drives are split in to smaller parts which makes them easier to find when he sends his weekly links to his class mates.
At this moment in time Matty is home schooled 5 mornings a week for 2 hours by his favourite TA from school, this stops and starts depending on Matty’s wellbeing and on covid/illness in school. This takes place In the garden or behind perspex to keep matty safe. The school have been amazing and we are very lucky.
Any questions please just ask me, I’m happy to answer. We travel within a 2 hour radius of Torbay and are happy to drive somewhere on request, it gives Matty a task and he loves a task.
Matty is in the van with headphones on watching/Listening to his beloved carnival dvds. It’s his happy place, the only place he doesn’t tic, rock, pick and pace. It’s also the closest Mike and I get to down time as Matty will be relaxed and not have any anxiety.
At the moment we stay in the van driving and people watching, rarely get out, Matty in general refuses to. We can be out for 3 - 4 hours on a longer drive so we purchased a Porto loo which is a bucket with a lid. Does the job and keeps Matty safe. It really is the basics and smallest things that are keeping us plodding along until we can be with loved ones again.
Seriously be kind please, we really are just winging it and I’m so exhausted that negative stuff effects me, it shouldn’t but it does.
Anyway stay safe, we hope you like our little videos, but if not that’s fine. We made them for Matty so as long as he is happy, life is good.
We watch the videos on tv everyday that we are stuck at home Which Is 90% of the time, they show us the outside world. So not for critics just for us to enjoy and reminisce and share with like minded souls.
