Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) → How to ride, view schedule, buy tickets, board train, transfer, etc

The Long Island Rail Road (or LIRR) is a commuter rail that goes through Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. It's a great way to see the areas east of New York City (which is Long Island). I use it to go to Far Rockaway beach, Citifield for a Mets game, and Billie Jean King/Arthur Ashe for the US Open Tennis. But how do you take the LIRR? How do you ride the Long Island Rail Road? In this video, I'm going to cover everything you need to know about the Long Island Rail Road — from defining what it is to buying a ticket from a machine or phone, finding and boarding your train, figuring out transfers, and so much more. Enjoy and Happy New York-ing!

Driving Around Small Town Sevierville, TN in 4k Video

Filmed on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, I drive around village Sevierville, Tennessee to see what's going on.

Sevierville is a city in and the county seat of Sevier County, Tennessee, located in eastern Tennessee. The population was 17,889 at the 2020 United States Census.

By the early 18th century, the Cherokee controlled much of the Tennessee side of the Smokies and had established a series of settlements along the Little Tennessee River. The various Cherokee trails crossing Sevier County brought the first Euro-American traders and settlers to the area.

European long hunters and traders arrived in the Sevierville area in the mid-18th century. Isaac Thomas, the most notable of these early traders, was well respected by the Cherokee and may have lived at the Overhill town of Chota at one time. Europeans like Thomas were mainly in the area in search of animal furs, which they exchanged for manufactured goods.

As settlers began to trickle into East Tennessee, relations with the Cherokee began to turn hostile. During the Revolutionary War, the Cherokee, who had aligned themselves with the British, launched sporadic attacks against the sparse settlements in the Tennessee Valley.

In December 1780, Col. John Sevier, fresh off a victory against the British at King's Mountain, launched a punitive expedition against the Cherokee. Sevier defeated the Cherokee at the Battle of Boyd's Creek and proceeded to destroy several Cherokee settlements along the Little Tennessee.

Sevier County was created in 1794 and named after John Sevier. At a meeting at Thomas' house the following year, the Forks-of-the-Little-Pigeon area was chosen as the county seat and renamed Sevierville. James McMahan donated a 25-acre tract of land for erecting a town square.

The first Sevier County Courthouse was built in 1796. According to local legend, court was held in a flea-infested abandoned stable before its construction. The lore suggests that irritated lawyers paid an unknown person a bottle of whiskey to burn down the stable, forcing the new county to build an actual courthouse.

In 1820, a stagecoach road connected Sevierville with Maryville to the west. Sevierville's status as a county seat along these early roads helped it grow. By 1833, the town had a population of 150, including two doctors, two carpenters, a tanner, two tailors, a shoemaker, three stores, a hatter, two taverns, and two mills. Distilleries were popular means of supplemental income. By 1850, John Chandler's distillery was producing 6,000 gallons of whiskey per year.

Slavery was not common in Sevier County, although it did occur, especially at the large plantations along the French Broad River. Even before the American Civil War, Sevierville – a hotbed of abolitionist activity – was home to a relatively large community of free African-Americans. In 1861, only 3.8% of the residents of Sevier County voted in favor of secession from the Union.

Sevierville, situated at a major crossroads south of Knoxville, suffered consistent harassment, looting, and confiscation of property by both Union and Confederate forces moving through the town in 1863 and 1864.

Sevierville recovered quickly from the war, with a number of new houses and businesses being built in the 1870s. Two members of the town's African-American community — house builder Lewis Buckner and brickmason Isaac Dockery played a prominent role in Sevierville's post-war construction boom. Buckner designed a number of houses in the Sevierville area over a 40-year period, 15 of which are still standing.

With the opening of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1934, tens of thousands of tourists began passing through Sevierville, which was situated about halfway between the park and Knoxville. U.S. 441, initially known as Smoky Mountain Highway, was completed to Sevierville in 1934 and later extended to North Carolina.

Entertainer Dolly Parton was born in Sevierville in 1946. In more recent years, the town erected a statue of Parton on the lawn of the courthouse and named Dolly Parton Parkway after her.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 17,889 people residing in the city.

The racial makeup of the city was 88.9% White, 1.5% African American, 0.6% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0% Pacific Islander, 6.1% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race accounted for 10.3% of the population.

The per capita income for the city was $21,779. About 18.7% of families and 23.3% of the population were living below the poverty line, including 34.8% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or older. #driving #travel #drivingtour

Cherry Grove ???? Fire Island NY ???????? Friday night walking tour to the Atlantic Ocean New York USA 2021

Cherry Grove ???? Fire Island NY ???????? Friday night walking tour to the Atlantic Ocean New York USA 2021

Cherry Grove (often referred to locally as The Grove) is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is located on Fire Island, a barrier island separated from the southern side of Long Island by the Great South Bay. The hamlet has approximately 300 houses on 41 acres (170,000 m2), a summer seasonal population of 2,000 and a year-round population of 15.

Cherry Grove, along with nearby Fire Island Pines, is considered one of the most popular lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT)-accepting resort communities in the United States. The New York Times quoted one homeowner at Cherry Grove that, this is a wonderful environment where you could be gay and open and hold hands and enjoy life....

In 2013, the Cherry Grove Community House and Theatre was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, one of only a few sites so far listed for their role in American LGBT history.

The founding philosophy of Cherry Grove is to be place to “Be Yourself.” The LGBTQ community comes here to enjoy the beach and the infamous nightlife. Every 4th of July, a ferryboat load of Drag Queens “Invade the Pines” and much merriment ensues. They also host the Miss Fire Island Contest at summer’s end and the Community Theater productions are top notch. Come to the Grove and be your happiest self. The Grove is a wet T-Shirt contest kind of town. Ferries leave from Sayville

The Grove is the wilder side of the gay scene and people feel free to be themselves here.

The dense foliage creates canopies over the roller coaster boardwalks. The homes, like everything in The Grove, have a sense of humor.

The downtown area and bay front has lots of shops and restaurants. Cherry Grove has one of the only two oceanfront restaurants on Fire Island.

Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy (unofficially referred to as Superstorm Sandy) was the deadliest, the most destructive, and the strongest hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm inflicted nearly $70 billion (2012 USD) in damage. Sandy was a Category 3 storm at its peak intensity when it made landfall in Cuba. While it was a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of the Northeastern United States, the storm became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record as measured by diameter, with tropical-storm-force winds spanning 1,150 miles (1,850 km).

Hurricane Sandy was referred to as “Superstore Sandy because it had lost some of the traits needed to call it a hurricane. Sandy developed as an ordinary hurricane in the Caribbean, but as it moved up the East Coast and encountered cooler air and water, it began to loose its tropical characteristics. Hurricane Sandy was no longer a hurricane when it made land fall on Fire Island which is why it is also called Superstorm Sandy. The October 2012 storm generated the highest storm tide ever recorded in New York, reaching to nearly 14 feet in height, about 9 feet of which was from storm surge.

Fire Island, New York

Fire Island is the Large Center Island of the outer barrier islands parallel to the south shore of Long Island, In the New York.
My video shooting on the top of Fire Island Lighthouse and to views Via The Robert Moses Causeway on its western end.
Fire Island lies on average 3.9 miles (6.2 km) off the south shore of Long Island, but nearly touches it along the east end. It is separated from Long Island by Great South Bay, which spans interconnected bays along Long Island: Patchogue Bay, Bellport Bay, Narrow Bay, and Moriches Bay. The island is accessible by automobile near each end: via Robert Moses Causeway on its western end, and by William Floyd Parkway (Suffolk County Road 46) near its eastern end. Cross-bay ferries connect to over 10 points in between. Motor vehicles are not permitted on the rest of the island, except for utility, construction and emergency access and with limited beach-driving permits in winter. The island and its resort towns are accessible by boat, seaplane and a number of ferries, which depart from Patchogue, Bay Shore and Sayville.

Water Island Fire Island New York ???????? sunset view ???? walking tour 2021

Water Island Fire Island New York ???????? sunset view ???? walking tour NY USA ???????? summer September 10th 2021 4K video

Water Island
While Water Island might make you think it is a separate landmass, this is not the case. Water Island is a small, extremely private Fire Island beach community comprised of about 50 houses on modest plots of Fire Island real estate. With Davis Park to the East and Barrett Beach to the west, Water Island is far from the Fire Island beach civilization, creating a sense of privacy that is well-appreciated by its residents.

As early as 1878 a restaurant called the Pavilion existed where Water Island is today. It was run by a man named Richard Silsbee. During the 1890s Water Island was home to the prestigious White House Hotel, a pleasant example of beach hotel architecture designed by Edward Ryder and frequented by Theodore Roosevelt and his family. Caldwell Realty opened the areas up to residential development in 1912. The isolation of Water Island made it an ideal destination for rumrunners during the prohibition era.

Many coastal areas on Long Island and Fire Island share in this heritage, and as Fire Island has a legacy of wreckers and land pirates, this was not so great a leap—yet Water Island is perhaps the quintessential example of such an outpost. For a great many years, the residents of Water Island did not have even the most basic services. It was one of the last Fire Island communities to connect to the Long Island Power Authority grid. Prior to that, access to the nearest stores or restaurants required a mile-long hike to either Fire Island Pines or Davis Park. For many years there was no ferry service as well, only private boat access. However now a minimal ferry schedule out of Sayville, NY, finally exists.
