Metrotrails Hudson Waterfront Series Hike: Highland Falls to Haverstraw

Metrotrails hike that started at Mine Dock Point near Highland Falls, NY where there were some outstanding views of the Bear Mountain Bridge and then we headed south along the Hudson River to Haverstraw Bay Park. We crossed the Popolopen Bridge then walked through the zoo section of Bear Mountain State Park on the Appalachian Trail. We continued south on trails to the highway. From there, we took the Jones Point Path, on the abandoned earlier highway alignment heading downstream. The next leg of the hike was the beautiful West Shore Drive.

We did an out and back side trip to Stony Point Park and lighthouse, also site of an historic battleground. We did the trails and checked out the excellent view, then more back roads led us to Beach Road which afforded more splendid Hudson views. We crossed the causeway to Grassy Point, and then followed the River Road south to Haverstraw Bay park where we closed out the day.

Scenic Drives in Harriman State Park NY - 7 lakes Drive CR 106 Lake Welch PKWY

This is a relaxing road trip video with plenty of useful information about Harriman State Park.

At 47,527 acres (192.33 km2), Harriman State Park is the second largest state park in New York State. Located in Rockland and Orange counties 30 miles (48 km) north of New York City, it is a haven for hikers with over 200 miles (320 km) of hiking trails. The park is also known for its 31 lakes, multiple streams, public camping area, and great vistas. The park's hiking trails are currently maintained by volunteers from the New York - New Jersey Trail Conference.

On its northeastern edge, Harriman State Park borders the 5,000-acre (20 km2) Bear Mountain State Park as well as the United States Military Academy's 16,000-acre (65 km2) forest reserve. To the southwest, it partly borders the state-owned 18,000-acre (73 km2) Sterling Forest reserve. These areas, together with the state's Storm King forest reserve of 1,900 acres (7.7 km2), amount to contiguous protected forests that are substantially larger than Harriman alone.

The following parkways exist within the park;
Palisades Interstate Parkway
Seven Lakes Drive
Long Mountain Parkway
Lake Welch Parkway
Tiorati Brook Road
Arden Valley Road
Orange-Rockland CR 106

Hudson River Greenway, Manhattan, New York City, USA

The Hudson River Greenway is the longest greenway in Manhattan, running along the West Side, from Battery Park in the south -- mostly through Hudson River Park, Riverside Park, and Fort Washington Park -- to Dyckman Street in the north. The Hudson River Greenway is the most heavily used bikeway in the United States. The majority of it is close to Hudson River water level, except the portion north of George Washington Bridge where it climbs steeply, to approximately 160 feet and includes Inspiration Point, with views of The Palisades in New Jersey across the river and of the George Washington Bridge to the south. The Hudson River Greenway is part of the East Coast Greenway, a 3,000-mile trail system connecting Maine to Florida, and is also part of the statewide Empire State Trail, forming its southernmost portion.
