West Bridgford is a town in the Rushcliffe borough of Nottinghamshire, England, immediately south of the city of Nottingham, delimited by the River Trent. It forms a continuous urban area with Nottingham, effectively making it a suburb of the city; this helped lead to it being chosen as the location of the administrative centre for Nottinghamshire County Council. The population of the town at the 2011 census was 47,109.
As part of the Rushcliffe constituency its MP is The Rt Hon Kenneth Clarke, QC (Conservative Party). The headquarters of Nottinghamshire County Council moved to the town in 1959 from the traditional county town of Nottingham. The town is enclosed by the A52 and the River Trent.
Most of the main roads in central West Bridgford are named after wealthy families that dominated the town's early history. There are also, however, new developments that are, in effect, suburbs of the suburb named after different things. For example, the Gamston development has roads named after the Lake District, and Compton Acres has roads named after Dorset and the Purbeck Coast.
There are no 'Streets' in West Bridgford. When the town was being planned in the Victorian period, the roads were originally named as streets: for example, Musters Street and South Street. However, the planners eventually decided that the term 'Street' was too urban, so today the town has Musters Road and South Road.
West Bridgford is notably different from the other suburbs of Nottingham in a variety of ways. During the Victorian period, Nottingham was growing rapidly, but development in West Bridgford was restricted, as much of the land was owned by the Musters family.
Nottingham Express Transit, a light rail system opened in Nottingham in 2004, runs from Hucknall in the north to Nottingham railway station and onwards to Clifton in the south or Toton/Chilwell in the west. Plans were made to include West Bridgford in future phases of the project. Analysis by the joint City Council project has determined it unlikely that the centre of West Bridgford will be part of further evolution of the tram line: it now extends south of the Trent to Clifton along the route of the former Great Central Main Line, which forms part of the boundary of Nottingham and West Bridgford. As the city boundary runs to the immediate west of the line the three stations on this part of the route (Wilford Lane, Compton Acres, Ruddington Lane) are in West Bridgford, and serve western parts of West Bridgford, which opened in August 2015. Extensive bus services frequently serve most of the town.
Several bridges across the River Trent allow access to the city of Nottingham. The access to Nottingham has been an aspect of the popularity of West Bridgford as a suburb.
Trent bridge
A road bridge with three lanes in both directions. It is highly decorated on the sides with carvings that can be seen from the river.
Wilford Suspension Bridge
A bicycle and pedestrian bridge to the west of Trent Bridge, linking the town with The Meadows, Nottingham.
Wilford Toll Bridge
Since August 2015 this bridge carries part of the tram route (Nottingham Express Transit) connecting Clifton, Nottingham, Ruddington and Compton Acres suburb of West Bridgford to the centre of Nottingham and beyond. The small suburb of Silverdale is served by the adjacent ring road. The tram passes by the Becket school and travels through Compton Acres into Clifton.
Lady Bay Bridge
A two-lane road bridge, originally the rail crossing for the Midland Railway's alternative route from London to Nottingham via Melton Mowbray. Despite passing right through the middle of West Bridgford, mostly on a high embankment, there was never a West Bridgford station: the nearest station on this line was at Edwalton, and even that closed in July 1941, the line itself in May 1967.
The northern boundary of West Bridgford is the River Trent, spanned by two road bridges, Trent Bridge and Lady Bay Bridge, and two pedestrianised bridges consisting of a suspension bridge and a toll bridge near the Ferry Inn linking nearby Wilford village with the Meadows area of Nottingham city. The pedestrianised bridges link particularly well with cycling routes to Nottingham, the railway station and the university areas, making several rapid, safe, car-free routes available.

Why is Nottingham so poor? Oh, my Nottingham! So we wish to exclaim. Alas! Salvos being fired from both sides of the divide hasn’t given us a cause for exultation in Nottingham. Can you count the number of times Nottingham has been named the poorest city in the UK within 7 years? There is definitely some requiring attention in and about this city. Oh you who dislike Nottingham, please know that you haven’t found support in this video. And you enthusiastic admirers of this city, we’re not out here now to increase your fan base. As usual, we would look at the available facts regardless of fervent rebuffs of figures by the city officials, and serve you nothing but the truth.

Let's peep into what available data reveals about Nottingham's situation. We start with figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Nottingham’s gross disposable household income (GDHI) is the lowest in the UK. According to the last available figures, the average yearly after-tax earnings in the city is 12,445 pounds. With that amount, residents of Nottingham resident's earnings are over 7,000 pounds less than the national average. Those who consider this alone will be justified in their assertion that Nottingham is one of the poorest cities.
The employment rate also doesn’t bode well for the city. According to the last available figures, only 57 percent of all Nottingham’s 16 to 64-year-olds are at work. This is the lowest employment rate of all major cities in the United Kingdom. This is one of the reasons the city is the poorest of 179 areas across the country. But when you look at the overall scores, Nottingham isn’t just at the bottom, it’s so far behind the rest.
As expected, this breeds crime, the rate of which has increased across the region. We all know that there’s a close link between deprivation and poverty and crime. While explaining his decision to establish the Nottingham School of Boxing in the city, Marcellus Baz, of Sneinton, a repentant gang member said that he saw there were many areas of deprivation in the city and he wanted to get the youth there to work.
Council’s Rejection
This appears to be a kind of indictment of the city council. We, therefore, understand it keeps rejecting the ranking giving a lot of reasons. Well, this is not an isolated response. This has always been the position of Nottingham’s council. One of the reasons given by the council is that it has many affluent suburbs that aren’t captured in the figures as part of the city's official boundaries. For that reason, the results, they said, have been skewed by geography. The council further states that based on its own calculation, the figure that would truly represent the city’s situation is 16,000 pounds per person once affluent suburbs like West Bridgford and Beeston have been included.
The council believes that Nottingham would move up to the 56th position of the UK districts if the places where people have more disposable income are included in the city figures. It claims that more than half of the people employed in Nottingham City live in surrounding districts.
Also, the city council always blamed the unusually high student in the city for the low ranking. As usual, the council says the city’s apparent poor economic performance is a result of 46,000 students who are less likely to be in full-time or well-paid forms of employment. According to the council, the figures of these people have diluted those of the individuals in well-paid and highly-skilled jobs who live in more prosperous adjoining boroughs.

5 Most Dangerous Cities in the UK
What are the most dangerous cities to live in the United Kingdom? Ranking the United Kingdom as the 116th most dangerous country is not bad at all. That means the country is safer than, at least, 115 others in the world. Between 2020 and 2021 alone, it experienced 600 homicides as just one of the crimes reported that year. A total of 6.1 crimes were reported during that year. Out of these, 2 million were crimes against another person. If there were 67 million people in the UK during that year, the crime rate would be a whole 2,985 crimes per 100,000 people. However, it’s not everywhere in the UK that is dangerous. In this video, we will discuss those currently rated as the 5 most dangerous cities in the United Kingdom.
5. Nottingham
This city with links to the Robin Hood legend and which is famous for lacemaking and the tobacco industry is incidentally here. If we go by its population of 337,100, Nottingham that’s playing host to the headquarters of a number of major international businesses including Boots, E. On Energy, Pedigree Petfoods, and Gala Bingo, is the 14th largest city in the UK.
It’s the most dangerous major city in Nottinghamshire. Out of the 236 cities, towns, and villages in Nottinghamshire, it’s among the 20 most dangerous overall. In 2021, the overall crime rate in Nottingham was 114 crimes per 1,000 people. That was 49 percent higher than the crime rate in Nottinghamshire with a rate of 76 per 1,000 residents. Violence and sexual offenses are the most common crimes in Nottingham with 14,210 offenses during 2021, producing a crime rate of 45 per 1,000.
In 2020, a total of 34,228 crimes were committed with a crime rate of 108 per 1,000. In 2019, 42,113 were committed with a rate of 133. The year 2018 witnessed 41,970 crimes with a rate of 133. In 2017, the crime rate was 119 with 37,753 crimes. And in 2106, the total crime was 30,097 with a rate of 95 crimes per 1,000 people.
In December 2021, Nottingham was the most dangerous city for bicycle theft, with 52 crimes reported. That month was also a bad month for the city’s residents as it was the most dangerous area in Nottinghamshire for burglary while 110 of these crimes were committed. The city recorded 321 criminal damages and arsons still during December 2021.
4. Birmingham
We just have to agree with the inclusion of Birmingham on this list. This is a city with a population of about 1.1 million with an urban area having just over 2.6 million residents and a metropolitan area with a population of 3.5 million. Birmingham, despite having a coveted reputation as the first manufacturing city in the world some 200 to 150 years ago, is currently one of the most dangerous cities in the UK.
As the most dangerous major city in the West Midlands, Birmingham is among the 10 most dangerous overall out of the 44 cities, towns, and villages in the West Midlands. In 2021, the overall crime rate in this city was 137 crimes per 1,000 people. That was 17 percent higher than the West Midlands’ overall crime rate of 118 per 1,000 residents. Violence and sexual offenses are the most common crimes in Birmingham during 2021 when some 78,062 of these crimes were committed. That was a rate of 67 per 1,000 and was 38 percent higher than the 2020's figure.
Consider also the historical crime rate for Birmingham, not just what it had in 2021, and form your opinion. In 2020, a total of 123,271 crimes were committed with a crime rate of 106 per 1,000. In 2019, 120,832 were committed with a rate of 104 per 1,000 residents. The city in 2018 witnessed 114,605 crimes with a rate of 99. In 2017, the crime rate was 89 while 103,319 crimes took place. And in 2106, the total crime was 90,930 while at the rate of 78 crimes per 1,000 people.
