Wesseling ist eine mittelgroße Stadt im Rhein-Erft-Kreis. Im Norden grenzt sie an Köln, im Westen an den Rhein. Diese rund 10 Kilometer Rheinufer haben es allerdings in sich, denn erst sie machten es möglich, dass sich der alte ‚Erftkreis’ im Jahr 2003 mit dem neuen Namen ‚Rhein-Erft-Kreis’ schmücken konnte. Der Ortsname Wesseling geht auf die 820 n. Chr. an das Kloster Montfaucon überschriebene Gutsherrschaft „Waslicia“ zurück. Es besteht heute aus den vier Stadtteilen: Mitte, Keldenich, Berzdorf und Urfeld. Sehenswert in Wesseling sind z.B. das alte Rathaus, das Naturschutzgebiet Entenfang und die Rheinpromenade.
Wesseling ist geprägt von der Industrie. Aufgrund der innerhalb ihrer Stadtgrenzen ansässigen drei Chemiewerke und einer Erdölraffinerie besitzt sie in der internationalen Petrochemieindustrie einen bedeutenden Stellenwert.
Mit dem Rheinforum hat Wesseling einen Veranstaltungsort der besonderen Art zu bieten. Unmittelbar am Rhein gelegen, können dort neben Kulturveranstaltungen auch Tagungen, Messen oder Firmen-Events stattfinden. Immer inklusive: das interessante Flair einer historischen Fabrikhalle.
Ein Highlight in Wesseling ist mit Sicherheit das Naturschutzgebiet Entenfang. Mit einer Fläche von über 75.000 m² ist es eines der wenigen Reste der ursprünglichen Auenlandschaften in der Köln-Bonner Bucht und stellt damit ein geologisches Denkmal in der Landschaftsgeschichte des südlichen Niederrheins dar. Durch aufwändige Erweiterungen der Grünflächen wurde zusätzlich ein attraktives Naherholungsgebiet geschaffen.
Die Wesselinger scheinen ein aufmüpfiges Völkchen zu sein. Als die Stadt am 1. Januar 1975 in die Stadt Köln eingemeindet werden sollte, regte sich Widerstand. Nach erfolgreicher Klage erhielt Wesseling 1976 seine Selbstständigkeit zurück. Am Tag der Verkündigung wurde das unter großem Jubel der Bevölkerung dem entsprechend gefeiert. Dem Vernehmen nach, soll reichlich Alkohol geflossen sein.
Wesseling, eine Stadt geprägt von der Industrie in exponierter Rheinlage. Die Rheinpromenade: Passanten verweilen, lassen sich nieder, und die Hektik des Alltags verliert an Bedeutung. Man sieht Schiffe vorüber fahren und träumt vielleicht für einen kleinen Augenblick von fernen Ländern.

I’ve just come back from travelling around Germany for 10 days and one of my favourite spots was Dusseldorf.
I have to admit I’m not the best at geography sometimes, but when I arrived in the city I quickly discovered there were some great day trips from Dusseldorf, all just a short train ride away.
I’d heard of Cologne, Dortmund and Essen but I never realised they were so close together. That meant as soon as I arrived in Düsseldorf I wanted to explore all North Rhine-Westphalia had to offer. (That’s the name of the region where you’ll find all of these places by the way!)
Throw in some crazy industrial landscapes like Zeche Zollverein and Duisburg Landschaftspark (just wait until you see the photos) and you’ve got the making of a fantastic few days in and around Dusseldorf.

Shopping street in Cologne. Hohe Straße runs from Wallrafplatz near Cologne Cathedral to Schildergasse. Here you can buy just about anything, from clothes and shoes to electronic equipment. Numerous souvenir shops offer Cologne mementos. The huge Lego store is a big draw for children and grownups alike. The cafés and restaurants on the Wallrafplatz and the Domplatte (the square in front of the cathedral) invite shoppers to rest and linger.
