The Chenab River (/tʃɪˈnæb/) is a major river that flows in India and Pakistan, and is one of the 5 major rivers of the Punjab region. It is formed by the union of two headwaters, Chandra and Bhaga, which rise in the upper Himalayas in the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh, India. The Chenab flows through the Jammu region of Jammu and Kashmir, India into the plains of Punjab, Pakistan, before ultimately flowing into the Indus River.
The waters of the Chenab were allocated to Pakistan under the terms of the Indus Waters Treaty. India is allowed non-consumptive uses such as power generation. The Chenab River is extensively used in Pakistan for irrigation. Its waters are also transferred to the channel of the Ravi River via numerous link canals

Wazīrābād, town, northern Punjab province, Pakistan, just east of the Chenāb River. It is an important rail junction, with the Siālkot and Faisalābād (formerly Lyallpur) lines of the Pakistan Western Railway branching off and crossing the Chenāb River at the Alexandra Bridge. Industries include boatbuilding, cutlery, and box manufacture, and the town is a timber, cloth, grain, and sugar market. It was supposedly founded by Wazīr Khān in the 18th century, and in 1809 it was acquired by Ranjit Singh and made the headquarters of his Italian general, Avitabile, who built the new town. Pop. (1998 prelim.) 89,652.

Urban civilization existed in the Indus River valley from about 2500 to 1500 BCE, when, it is believed, Aryan incursions brought it to an end. The area entered recorded history with the annexation of Punjab and Sindh to the Persian empire by Darius I (c. 518 BCE). The founder of the Maurya dynasty, Chandragupta, incorporated the region into his Indian empire about 322 BCE. The first Muslims to penetrate northern India were the Arabs, who in 712 CE conquered the lower Punjab. The rest of the Punjab was conquered (1007–27) by Maḥmūd of Ghazna. The area subsequently came under various other Muslim rulers until the victorious entry of the Mughals in 1526. Under the Mughals the province enjoyed peace and prosperity for more than 200 years. Their power declined after 1738, however, and in 1747 Lahore fell under weak Afghan rule marked by lawlessness and disorder. The religious sect called the Sikhs rose to power in the latter part of the 18th century. The Punjab came under British occupation in 1849, after the British victory over the Sikhs in the battles of Chilianwala and Gujrat. When the Indian subcontinent received its independence in 1947, Punjab was split between Pakistan and India, with the larger western portion becoming part of Pakistan. The present provincial boundaries were established in 1970.
