???????? WARNEMÜNDE | GERMANY | 4K | A walking tour in the village center

Warnemünde is a seaside resort located in the Hanseatic Town of Rostock.
It was founded in 1200 as a fishing village. Due to its strategic location at the mouth of the river Unterwarnow, Rostock bought it in 1323 to control the entrance from the Baltic Sea into the Unterwarnow.

In the middle of the 19th century, it became a famous seaside resort, and the small fishermen's house gave room to some big hotels.

Nowadays it's a perfect day trip from Berlin. It's a 3 hours train ride. Due to the 9€ ticket, it was well-visited in the summer of 2022.

ROSTOCK in two days: top sights in charming seaside city in Germany [subtitles EN/PL]

Get to know Rostock with us! Why to visit? What to see? What is its history? Let us guide you!

This interesting city in northern Germany is worth visiting due to its rich culture, medieval monuments, Hanseatic climate and a charming seaside district, where you can also eat well. If you have a free weekend, Rostock is the perfect place for a short break!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Facts about Rostock:
- the largest city in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (200k inhabitants)
- home to the oldest university in the Baltic region and one of the oldest universities in the world (founded in 1419)
- once powerful seaport, which was a member of the Hanseatic League
- has many well-perserved Gothic architecture (houses, churches, market squares)
- possesses an unique astronomical clock from 15th century which is still working
- its seaside part is main Baltic resort with the widest sandy beach in eastern Germany

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the unique atmosphere of its harbour, maritime flair is at the heart of Rostock. It's a home to major events, such as the Hanse Sail in August, which pulls in hundreds of sailing vessels and a million visitors each year. This maritime festival is a special occasion for the entire Baltic Sea region. All of this takes place against the magnificent backdrop of Rostock's Old Town with its characteristic deep-red brick buildings that date back to Hanseatic times and house numerous major historical attractions.

Distinctive pedestrian zones have been established from the Doberaner Platz square to the Neuer Markt square, and from the Universitätsplatz square to the city port. These areas are also great for eating out, offering everything from fresh fish to international cuisine, while those with a sweet tooth should pay a visit to the Schokoladerie de Prie, a chocolatier by the port. The trendy Kröpeliner Tor district also has cosy restaurants, bars and cafés serving refreshing beer. But wherever you go, it's always worth taking a closer look either side of the main streets, where independent shops in old warehouses and lovingly restored town houses are just waiting to be discovered. And what you will find, no matter where you look, is the soul and charm of this extraordinary city.

Rostock in 2 minutes | Rostock Historical Center | Travel Germany [4K]

Rostock with around 208,000 inhabitants, is the third-largest city on the German Baltic coast after Kiel and Lübeck, the eighth-largest city in the area of former East Germany, as well as the 39th-largest city of Germany. Rostock was the largest coastal and most important port city in East Germany.

Rostock stands on the estuary of the River Warnow into the Bay of Mecklenburg of the Baltic Sea. The city stretches for about 16 km (10 mi) along the river, that flows into the sea in the very north of the city, between the boroughs of Warnemünde and Hohe Düne. The city center lies further upstream, in the very south of the city. While most of Rostock's inhabitants live on the western side of the Warnow, the area east of the river is dominated by the port, industrial estates, and the forested Rostock Heath. The city's coastline east and west of the river mouth is relatively undeveloped, with long sandy beaches prevailing. The name of the city is of Slavic origin and the river is of Lithuanian origin.

Rostock is the economic center of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the state's only regiopolis. The port of Rostock is the fourth-largest port in Germany after the North Sea ports of Hamburg, Bremen/Bremerhaven, and Wilhelmshaven, and the largest port on the German Baltic coast. The ferry routes between Rostock and Gedser in Denmark as well as Trelleborg in Southern Sweden are among the busiest between Germany and Scandinavia. Rostock–Laage Airport lies in a rural region southeast of the city.

The city is home to the oldest university in the Baltic region and one of the oldest universities in the world, the University of Rostock, founded in 1419. The university's hospital, Universitätsmedizin Rostock, is one of two university hospitals in the state, along with Universitätsmedizin Greifswald of the University of Greifswald in Western Pomerania.
