Places to see in ( Wareham - UK )

Places to see in ( Wareham - UK )

Wareham is an historic market town and, under the name Wareham Town, a civil parish, in the English county of Dorset. The town of Wareham is situated on the River Frome eight miles southwest of Poole.

Wareham is situated on the A351 Lytchett Minster-Swanage road and at the eastern terminus of the A352 road to Dorchester and Sherborne, both roads now bypassing the town centre. The town has a station on the South Western Main Line railway, and was formerly the junction station for services along the branch line to Swanage, now preserved as the Swanage Railway.

To the north west of the town a large conifer plantation, Wareham Forest stretches several miles to the A35 road and the southern foothills of the Dorset Downs. To the south east is Corfe Castle and the heathland that borders Poole Harbour, including Wytch Farm oil field and Studland & Godlingstone Heath Nature Reserve. About four miles (7 km) to the south is a chalk ridge, the Purbeck Hills, and eight miles (12 km) to the south is the English Channel.

The civil parish of Wareham Town encompasses the walled town of Wareham, situated on the land between the rivers Frome and Piddle, together with the area of Northport to the north of the River Piddle, and a relatively small amount of the surrounding rural area.

Wareham contains several places of worship with the oldest being the Saxon churches of Lady St. Mary (substantially modified but the origins are pre-conquest. The Saxon nave was demolished in 1841-2) and St. Martins-on-the-Walls (built c.1030, dedicated to Martin of Tours). Both are Anglican. The 14th century building of Holy Trinity Church stands on the site of the Saxon chapel St Andrew's and was until 2012 a tourist information centre. Other churches are the Wareham United Reformed Church in Church Street, St. Edward the Martyr Roman Catholic church on Shatters Hill, Wareham Methodist Church in North St. and the Evangelical Church in Ropers Lane.

( Wareham - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Wareham . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Wareham - UK

Hidden Britain - Ep 5: Wareham - Dorset

In this episode of Hidden Britain, we move away from coastal seaside resorts and on to the Walled Saxon Town of Wareham. It may be a blink and you'll miss it settlement, but its checked full of Dark Age history!

You can find out more about Wareham here:

WAREHAM WALLS AND RIVER WALKS DORSET

It may well be a gateway to the delights of the Isle of Purbeck, but I recommend stopping to sample a Saxon Wall walk around Wareham first.

The walks around the town are easy and generally flat and offer the chance to sample some great history as you follow them.

Tyneham (Dorset's Ghost Village) and Worbarrow Bay, Near Wareham, Dorset, England - August 2023

Tyneham is a ghost village abandoned in 1943 in the south of Dorset, Southern England, near Lulworth on the Isle of Purbeck. Its civil parish was abolished on 1 April 2014 and merged with Steeple to form Steeple with Tyneham.

The village is situated northeast of Worbarrow Bay on the Jurassic Coast, about 6.0 km (3.5 miles) south of Wareham and 16 km (10 miles west of Swanage. The hamlet / village lies in a secluded east–west valley between two ridges of the Purbeck Hills.

Tyneham is only accessible when the Lulworth military Firing-ranges are open to the public. These ranges are owned by the Ministry of Defence and are used for exercises in tank war-fare.

The parish includes evidence of occupation dating back to Iron Age Britain; there are more than 30 barrows in the area, although most have been damaged by shelling. Proof of Roman occupation has also been found in the valley around Tyneham. South of the chalk ridge are remains of a medieval settlement and strip fields.

The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Tigeham, meaning goat enclosure. A century later, the village was known as Tiham and only in later times as Tyneham. The limestone church of St Mary dates from at least the 15th century.

In 1683 Nathaniel Bond (1634–1707) of Lutton acquired Tyneham from the Williams family. He also bought Creech Grange in 1691[5] and the family still hold their Purbeck estates. Tyneham school was established by the Reverend Nathaniel Bond (1804–89) in 1860. It was later declared as property of the rectory and was closed in 1932 due to lack of pupils.

The village and 3,200 hectares of surrounding heathland and chalk downland around the Purbeck Hills were requisitioned just before Christmas 1943 by the then War Office (now MoD) for use as firing ranges for training troops. 225 people were displaced the last person leaving a notice on the church door:

'Please treat the church and houses with care; we have given up our homes where many of us lived for generations to help win the war to keep men free. We shall return one day and thank you for treating the village kindly.'

This measure was supposed to be temporary for the duration of World War II, but in 1948 the Army placed a compulsory purchase order on the land and it has remained in use for military training ever since. Although littered with scrap used as targets and subject to regular shelling, the land has become a haven for wildlife as it has been free from farming and development. In 1975, the Ministry of Defence began opening the village and footpaths across the ranges at weekends and throughout August.

This video was filmed at the end of August and show some of the village buildings that have fallen into disrepair or have been damaged by shelling. In 1967, most of the manor house, with parts that dated back to the 14th century, was pulled down by the then Ministry of Works. The church of St Mary, however, remains largely intact; it has a stained-glass window by Martin Travers and memorials to the Bond family. The church and school house have since been preserved as museums. In 2008, Tyneham Farm was reopened to the public and conservation work there is ongoing.

The music for this video is Tovey's Piano Concerto in A Major, Op. 15: II. Adagio ma non troppo performed by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra - Martyn Brabbins, Steven Osborne.

360 Degree Tour: Corfe Castle, Wareham, Dorset, England

In October 2019, I visited the dramatic and imposing Corfe Castle located in the south of England, in the County of Dorset, UK. In the video, you can view the 360 degree video that I took which gives you a short tour around this location. I edited the video and added a suitable atmospheric track taken from YouTube's own audio library (the music track does not need any musical attribution), so enjoy the ride/tour and if you own some sort of VR headset or device, you can enjoy the experience as though you were there!
