Hidden Gem of the Hudson River | Poughkeepsie, NY
In our Coverage Project history we have visited many places in New York State, but most of these locations have been rather westerly. Once we travel east enough, we reach for the first time the Hudson Valley: a region of the Empire State characterized by its proximity to the namesake river and a culture somewhat under the influence of the greater New York City area. The Hudson River has served wonders for the east coast of the Mid-Atlantic. Used by the Mohawk, then Dutch, English and now American people, this body of water has given its surrounding area much economic prosperity for whomever inhabited it and thus a high desire for its control over hundreds of years. Along its banks sits a rather quaint city known as Poughkeepsie. Today we dive into a bit of its history and discover this area's stunning sights, man-made and natural. Don't drive past this place on your way to the Big Apple, give the hidden but beautiful Poughkeepsie a chance! Beacon was named to commemorate the historic beacon fires that blazed forth from the summit of the Fishkill Mountains to alert the Continental Army about British troop movements.
In 1683, the land that would come to include the City of Beacon was purchased from the Wappinger tribe by Francis Rombout and Gulian Verplanck, merchant from New York City. The sale was confirmed, in 1685.

Things to do in the Hudson Valley: Springtown Truss Bridge, Walkway Over the Hudson State Park
We are driving through the Hudson Valley during Fall / October in our Ford Transit Connect micro camper van. We spent the day exploring bridges in the Hudson Valley including the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park where we stumbled upon a farmer's market. After, we walked the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail to find the bridge that was featured in the movie, A Quiet Place, the Springtown Truss Bridge.

Cold Spring is a village in the town of Philipstown in Putnam County, New York, United States. The population was 2,013 at the 2010 census. It borders the smaller village of Nelsonville and the hamlet of Garrison. The central area of the village is on the National Register of Historic Places as the Cold Spring Historic District due to its many well-preserved 19th-century buildings, constructed to accommodate workers at the nearby West Point Foundry (itself a Registered Historic Place today). The town is the birthplace of General Gouverneur K. Warren, who was an important figure in the Union Army during the Civil War. The village, located in the Hudson Highlands, sits at the deepest point of the Hudson River, directly across from West Point. Cold Spring serves as a weekend getaway for many residents of New York City.
Commuter service to New York City is available via the Cold Spring train station, served by Metro-North Railroad. The train journey is about an hour and ten minutes to Grand Central Terminal.
